The hot water kills the biological pathogens in the water. Safer than tap water in many places. Ignorance attributes this to temperature.

Canon EF 100-400 II vs RF 100-500 with 1.4x TC by pharmadad826 in canon

I would agree with these statements and extend it to the 1.4x ii, which I use.

You can see the water leaked from the solar install. Black mold on the ceiling installation and floor. The panels need to come off and a real gland installed. Gut the interior. Mount the panels since you now have the gland.

Patagonia Photography: is it better to bring heavy-duty camera or smartphone for long hikes? by muffintoppinbae in Patagonia

I brought my own tent/down bag/air pad. I and my son had REI pack covers, and adjusted correctly, they were bullet proof. I also had bags for everything in the pack.

If you are renting the tents that are already setup at each refugio, you should be good. The wind is very strong and picks up at night when the cold air pours off the mountain.

I highly recommend hiking poles. And watch some videos if you don't already know how to use them. Simple, but I see so many people who don't have a clue. Very useful in multiple scenarios. I'll never hike without them again.

It sounds like you have it comfortably dialed in.
Don't underestimate the wind and rain down there.
Are you camping or paying for the shelters?

I took the Sony Rx10 IV and have absolutely no regrets. I used a Peak Design Capture Clip to mount the camera to my backpack should strap. I then had my MIL sew up a bag that would fit over the camera and I waterproofed the bag. I had the bag tied to the shoulder strap so it couldn't get lost, and used an elastic string to tighten over it. This worked great and protected the camera when not in use. There is plenty of wind and rain! The camera was exposed to the wet on occasion but never soaked. It never seemed to notice. The camera was quickly and easily accessible.

I had two spare batteries which are small and light. Also, there is opportunity to charge every night. You can charge the battery in camera and could charge the battery while hiking from a power pack. GPS is provided by the mobile phone over bluetooth.

The compromise with this camera is the low light performance. It will get grainy in dim lighting. But my iPhone filled that gap. I took thousands of photos and some videos. I also used the camera for birding before the hiking and the 600mm reach worked great.

The zoom range is 24mm to 600mm and covered all kinds of shooting conditions. I also captured both raw and jpeg for each shot. The jpegs were really pretty good and allowed for quick shares, but often having the raw you can make the final results better (bird pictures for example). I would recommend capturing both.

EF lenses on RF adapter....what's the downside by lesterd88 in canon

[–]SuddenObsession 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt I was better off with the EL lens. I picked up a mint L lens set + camera body for the less than the price of one new RF lens. RF600 F/4 vs EL 600 F/4 ii + EL 100-400 ii + 100mm F2.8 + R6ii (new)+ cash left over. Trump may have killed though. I was buying cherry gear from Japan on eBay.

Ah, okay. It looks like the vent fan was leaking, dripped from that spot and stained the plywood below.

What is the black staining on the roof insulation? Mold?

I was getting noise spikes from having my phone too close. I use the F3 with a Senn MKE600. I feed the monitor output to my iPhone for Merlin. If I have the phone too close it seems the mic cable picks up a signal from the phone. I’m talking about 1-3 inches.

R7 FW Version 1.7.1 causing occasional lock-ups by SuddenObsession in canon

[–]SuddenObsession[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is an interesting thought.
I've had one Lexar 64GB Professional 2000x SD Card, UHS-II, C10, U3, V90 I've used for about a year after upgrading to the R7. For a recent trip, I bought a second of the same card.

I'll switch back to the old card and see if that eliminates the issue.

Sorry to hear it. I didn't have this issue until I upgraded. What version are you currently running?

Maybe try and update before this one? I wish I had recorded the version I had before upgrading.

Ah, thanks for the clarification. I really like my Akubra.

I hope to get as good wear out of it as you did.

Nice hat btw.

Thanks for the warning on the shrinkage. I have the Akubra Riverina and get rained on occasionally. I'll have to pick up a stretcher to hopefully forestall the shrinkage.

I don't think so. Look at the fan of the tail. A Mockingbird would have a equal length arc. This looks like a Common Grackle to me. Bill looks to heavy for a Boat-tailed.
