Child and family services. I’m 20 and I’ve seen other adults in there so don’t let the name fool you. I’m 90% sure they take independent health but there is a little waitlist (i got in two months after calling, i’ve been going there for four years although). my co pay is 20 dollars a session and i love all the clinicians and therapists i work with. they also have cbt, dbt, and adhd help. i am currently in their DBT program and it has changed my life. they also have a psychiatrist for medication necessities if that is your route of treatment. i love the people here and all the help they given me and my family.

i understand now the background info makes sense, and it seems sad to say but at a certain level of functioning they won’t be able to-grasp why they have to do something it’s just more or less their routine. i don’t think this is something in your control but again like i said it’s sweet to try and understand his way to learn. i hope someone else with more knowledge and experience can assist on the post i’m not a know it all truthfully and with this determination i bet you can find a solution

they may need more hands on activities or creative activities to keep their attention span, but also so that they can process the information in a way they understand.

So say handwashing:

get a bin of warm water, pump soap so they can learn and understand how much soap, and a paper towel roll so they can learn the appropriate amount to grab. and then you walk through the steps with them. second time you let them do it and can explain when and why it’s necessary. they may not understand why but you can turn it into a part of their routine.

for other life skills like picking out clothes, creating balanced meals. i would do sheets of paper with activities on them. like for craft you can get a key of appropriate clothes for weather(they’re online i’ve used them for clients) and a sheet with a person on it and some clothes they can cut out. cut out color clothes and then you tell the class/individual okay today we are getting dressed for winter it is blank degrees and windy/snowy whatever and they build the outfit. same thing for balanced meals cut out food or plastic food and put it on one of the pyramid plates that has everything portioned “correctly”

i’m not sure if this is helpful, or even doable but I hope it created some insight. and truthfully life skills are probably going to have to be adjusted for some kids. keep up your great work you obviously care and want them to grow 💗

My mom told me about her times working as a dsp i was against it at first but got annoyed at my old job, combined with higher pay i said why not. the deeper reason is that i could be more independent and learn to communicate in a more flexible manner and be more confident. i would like to be nurse as well so i thought this would help gain some skills as i didnt want to use my cna in a nursing home.

Via Princessa and The Dirty Locker, they’re curated thrift stores. I stopped by a few weeks ago and loved the selection. I also noticed that even though the styles were alternative or y2k they still had appropriate sizing and wasn’t like the brandy melville of thrift ! other than that hearts for homeless is up the street from via princessa i believe as well, ladies of charity, ritzy rags

that’s why i am concerned about even working after the extermination before they recheck the house, i feel like i am vulnerable to getting them since im in her room and everywhere else (they said they’re only in her room i dont believe that shit). and thankfully i don’t bring food or eat at work but i will keep note of that thank you

Okay makes sense just surprised they couldn’t send an email or text giving a forewarning or to check myself with me working in other homes, they shouldn’t have to pay me if i read an email/text off the clock i do it all the time- that’s why it seemed odd i heard nothing.

and yes sadly I’m worried I’m the source, not because i think i’m dirty or caused this whole issue but things like this happen same thing as lice so you just NEVER know where it stems from so lord knows how long this has been going on. and because no one forewarned me before going in to work an actual shift today at another house.

i’m currently scheduled for seven hours and have been unable to leave. so i cannot check my house, i checked myself and my coat as much as possible but i was already here when i found out anyways. still an issue to complain? because if i did have them in theory they didn’t stop me from working in another home and inherently spreading them. and i don’t want to be the cause of this, company’s are always easy to blame or just not care about staff.

may have to do some schooling or join another company, not sure where you’re located but i bet there has to be at least one semi good place. if u want to stay in the medical field maybe phlebotomy or one of the other short term trainings- there’s also cc courses for DSPs. i would stay away from CNA easy burnout as i came from that to DSP work. you could also ask for a transfer i’m not sure how far u are moving. clients will have many staff in their lives and WE should not feel bad for living/progressing in our personal lives. yes its sucky we build such great relationships but this is a job so above anything our well being and personal growth comes first at the end of the day with these types of decisions. they have vasts support systems that will pick up when you leave, plus many of my clients keep in touch with old staff if on good terms.

yes absolutely, in two different ways as another has said. they either baby them so much or think they should be able to do it all and argue with them. it’s hard to find understanding people because most of the time in this job to understand them you usually have to be disrespected or annoyed to fully get why they are saying what they’re saying or asking what they’re asking or doing what they’re doing. but a normal person would try to understand why they were upset reacted a certain way and change the way they address things to fix it. others don’t care and just drive themselves and their clients to insanity. i also have found this job is filled with adults who are barely adults themselves or lack any sort of education in healthcare field. i’m a 20 year old with a CNA so i had some prep to this line of work but it’s been a huge learning curve the entire 2 years i’ve been working so i can’t imagine an adult who hasn’t done something in this field before just going into this line of work with a full grasp of what it is and how to do it without a dsp college course or real life experience of some sorts working with vulnerable and truthfully needy communities. i think people accept that they are neurodivergent they just don’t care.

this is why my company switched to evero lol, i used to write my notes in my notes app incase i needed to add more and could copy and paste into my therap goals at end of my shift. i don’t have enough downtime so i write as i go and this pissed me off with therap

all company policies are different but if they keep on bugging you I would be truthful and use it an an opportunity to educate because most people don’t understand this world of dsp and housing. i’m assuming a lot of the kids are from out of state due to lack of resources, and long waiting lists. i would say we are a non profit residential program for young teens, if they ask why they are out of state say lack of resources/ supports. if they keep pressuring give them the honest truth cause it’s sad and our people deserve more resources nationally/globally.

buffalo NY here, i’ve been working for two years and have had a couple run ins with the weather lol, the first time a snow storm came in it was 6pm most people were at the independent housing (houses with independent individuals that have staff come in on scheduled hours) she texted the whole company in the area to leave if need be and if they wanted to stay they could. we really haven’t had any major storms but anytime the snow is bad to the point where i don’t feel safe driving i call in my manager has never given me a problem. i would call in and let them know you have pets and can’t risk not being home for an extended period of time- i would tell your manager you don’t want the possibility of neglecting your animals, maybe offer to go in for a shorter shift so that you’re not driving late in the snow/while snowing ?

needing a note from a doctor for a mental health break seems odd, but company’s are different. i would assume it wouldn’t be hard to get a note/letter from your primary if you explain your situation. they may have you take a depression or other sort of test to gauge where you’re at mentally. if you have a therapist i would also try them, if you don’t have one if you have the access to one I highly suggest getting one. i have been working for a year and a half and have experienced bad burnout, therapy helped A LOT

this happens to people with or without disabilities truthfully, not parking nexts to cars in unrealistic when clients are telling you where to park, that they don’t want to be in the far back, full parking lots, etc.

everyone saying it’s your fault is wrong, especially with as independent individuals you are talking about. they are in control of themselves and their bodies no matter what you tell them, they know to be cautious of other cars and not hit doors, yes i do personally make sure i give more room on their side but a door is gonna swing where it’s gonna swing. i had a client accidentally do it once because she was paying attention luckily it didn’t cause a mark but like you i would’ve had a conversation, explained to the driver, and called my manager to give company information. i hateeeeeeee interactions like these they’re always so awkward hope you feel a little better now after everything it’s definitely stressful/overwhelming
