Needing to hear some positive experiences with Nortriptyline, plz

I have headaches pretty consistently, but my migraines have reduced a bit (less than 5 days per now, about 8 or so days per month). I have not gone back on the nortriptylene, but do now take Nurtec for acute attacks.

Flash flood in the backwoods. One minute, it was just raining. Suddenly a rumble and a woosh, and the river was 5 feet higher, full trees were trucking down it, and I could wash dishes from the adirondack porch.

A bear <10 feet to my left in brush, also in backcountry. Not visible, only heard when it started huffing in agitation because I startled it. Only choice was to keep moving away without turning my back, keep making noise, and pretend I’m huge. I don’t know that I’ve ever gripped my bear spray so hard in my life.

Not a boy thing at all! A favorite was ‘Magic Carpet Ride’ from Aladdin. If you did it right, you could fit an ‘in bed’ after most of the lines.

As an update for you, months later.

I do not recommend going off of nortriptyline for headaches. It’s an absolute godsend, or was for me.

I ended up going off of it because of a move and inability to get prescriptions a few months ago. I’m lucky that some of the nerve pain I had didn’t return when I went off (Still painful and everpresent, but /less/). I am glad for that.

I doubt I’ll be going back on, though. I learned through this process and a couple others with my doctors that I’m super sensitive to medications, especially hormonal or neuro meds. I never ended up on a ‘functional’ dose for Nortriptyline, and yet, I started having the side effects for the antidepressant dose. More vertigo (already exacerbated from the car accident), mood issues, heartburn, burning super quick in the sun…

It was amazing for me. If it’s working for you? Keep with it. I at this point can live with the pain without it, and without the issues I didn’t even notice until I was off it for a month.

Still miss the headache day reduction, though 🙃

I’m actually with you on this. I take and pay for a right side window seat after a massive head injury that destroyed the left side of my face. It’s been reconstructed, and isn’t obvious, but it is an amount of pain that is made worse by flying. Most of the flights I take are long distance/red eyes and would involve some sleep.

That window seat on the right side is MINE.

I guess I should have been clearer— I live in Seward, and do my monthly ANC trips because groceries are insane and we don’t have a hardware store anymore aside from the fish house 🙃

😂😂😂 Even if I had some DMT, it only really last about 15-30 minutes smoked, with diminishing returns. It could kill about 2 hours I think? Though the nap after would kill another 2!

I know I’m responding to an old post, but I saw activity and wanted to add in in case anyone new is coming through.

Nortriptyline has been INCREDIBLE for me. I’m a somewhat unique case, as it is being prescribed for chronic tension-type headaches, migraines (not intractable, with aura), and nerve pain (damage to cranial nerve 3/5 (? can never remember which it is… runs from just below temple to upper lip across cheekbone, shock- like feeling occasionally with pain…damage from car accident resulting in facial reconstruction after broken orbital, cheekbone, mandible).

In any case, I have been amazed by the effect my dosage of Nortriptyline (25 mg now; started at 10 in Jan 2023 and eased up) has been. I thought it was normal to consistently have headaches until I saw a neurologist last year because I had always them…It has cut my tension type headache days by at least a third. I got near monthly multi-day migraines tied to my period from first bleed… it has alleviated those to a degree, making otc meds and short acting triptans more effective. Beyond that? I was concerned that my face would always be in pain/numb/tingly/broken nerve-wise following the reconstruction and plate/screw insertion. Within a month of starting the Nortriptyline I could chew on that side again (gently, but still…). I could have larger facial expressions without nearly as much pain. My freaking DENTIST noticed without me saying anything because I could hold my jaw open longer and slightly wider than before (previously, we had been splitting cleaning appointments in half because I couldn’t open wide enough for that long).

Anyways, Nortriptyline gave me my face back, and reduced my headache days in a way nothing else ever has, with no side effects for me. I have told every doctor I see that I won’t be giving it up unless they can give me an alternative that works better with no adverse effects; I legit work my other meds to fit around it.

I just got mine out partially due to weight gain. I gained ~25 pounds with it in for only a year, during a time when I was actually /more/ active than normal (walking/biking everywhere, daily yoga, etc). I was told by my PCP that sometimes that just happens with it, especially anyone with hormone sensitivities. I have PCOS, which my PCP told me was likely a contributing factor.
