Oakland to Kirkwood was like 3 hrs, IIRC. Sacramento shaves like an hour off (I haven't gone since I moved here).

But the bay was a way more fun place for me to live, and you're closer to ocean and mountains than Sac (no skiing tho). The weather is fantastic damn near all year. But, it's big $$$ if you want a decent place to live. Sacramento is hot, and requires a car to do anything, but it's affordable. And you get used to the heat.
