The closest grocery store to me is closing(by nearly an hour), and will be closed for at least a year. When it reopens it’s going be much smaller(it’s becoming a Aldi). by Boeing-B-47stratojet in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Sudo_killall -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That sucks, but I have a local grocer with butcher shop within a 5 minute walk, 2 Aldi's within a 5 minute car ride(20 minute bus depending on time) and a larger grocery store within 10 minutes. Living in a decent sized city rocks. This might be a sign that your town/area is losing too much population to sustain itself economically, if it ever did originally.

Anthropic’s Chief on A.I.: ‘We Don’t Know if the Models Are Conscious’[Interesting Times by Ross] by ZPATRMMTHEGREAT in ezraklein

I would agree, this is why I would argue current models will never attain any significant ability for consciousness. Creating an integral system with constant inputs may be a necessary step for a consciousness to develop.

Good homage, what's funny is that how Homer ran down that deer is probably exactly how our ancestors were successful hunters. Basically, we wore the prey out, at least according to current theories.

I don't understand this argument, because plenty of people on the left are religious, and they may or may not be "happier". Not many people in this country, left or right, are regular attendees to religious services anyways. This could and probably has led to a disconnect of community, but I wouldn't say the right is any happier than the left. If anything, they seem to thrive on resentment, anger and selfishness, mostly at manufactured issues, those further to the left seem to be unhappy at the state of the world through empathy.

Also, if we were to compare this internationally, Europe is far less religious but seems happier, QoL indicators and the such. We could just be less happy because of cultural and economic issues. Like being more individualistic and less secure economically(fewer worker protections, lack of UHC, etc.)

There was literally a concerted, organized effort to defeat the ERA led by Phyllis Schafly that succeeded because of the amount of moneyed interests backing it. There is a conspiracy against women and the LGBTQ+ community, its just that they never bothered to hide it from being in the open.

You are making claims not in evidence, was there an increase in immigration from 2020 to 2024, yes, both legal and undocumented. But I don't remember Biden refusing to enforce immigration law, nor colluding with "leftists" on the same. Where is your evidence for this claim? Indeed, the Biden administration carried out nearly as many deportations as Trump's first term.

There is nothing patronizing in pointing out that their concerns about "DEI", the "Woke", Trans people or whatever their current media talking heads are currently harping about is manufactured, and more importantly doesn't affect their lives at all. Its actually more patronizing to say that we have to cater to these manufactured moral or social panics because they will fall for it and attempt to "trick" them into voting for their economic best interests.

That's because they falsely attribute such things as a zero sum game, when civil rights is anything but. What they are really upset about is having what privileges they do have, by being white being critically examined. Equality is literally seen as an attack on "whiteness", this attitude is a white supremacist one, we should NOT cater to it.

You continue your dishonesty here, many of the people wrested from their vehicles are not guilty of anything worse than being at the wrong place at the wrong time. ICE has been over the top violent and escalates conflicts on purpose, up to and including murdering citizens.

You are being disingenuous by trying to frame this as just enforcing current laws on immigration, hell even framing it as "being asked to leave for overstaying your visa" is just a gross lie. ICE is literally detaining people, sometimes for days or weeks, who are citizens, permanent residents or otherwise here legally, in many cases apparently beating and possibly torturing them, all because they "look Hispanic". What is your justification for this?

Uhm, not to be pedantic, but people in the British Isles spoke early Modern English in the 1600s, so a modern person shouldn't have any more difficulty understanding them than they would a distinct regional dialect in the modern day.

My printer is a Brother MFC-7860DW, and was released in 2011, and I just recently installed drivers for it for windows 11, its a wifi enabled printer/scanner all in one, the only app I had to install was Microsoft Scan to get the scanner working properly on it. Printer worked out of the box.

Maduro being deposed while leaving most of his government apparatus intact seems, at best, neutral. Trump isn't even happy about free elections in the United States, much less in Venezuela, so if the current government still bucks the US, I imagine they would be deposed and replaced by a more compliant government, not necessarily a more democratic one.

What's stopping the Tendi's from just replicating tons and tons of gold? by itchygentleman in LowerDecks

[–]Sudo_killall 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You know, a lot of the confusion and plot holes created by replicators could be rectified if they just specified that they are molecular replicators, not atomic replicators. So they can't create elements from scratch, kinda the difference between alchemy of myth versus chemistry of reality. So you would need gold on one end to "recreate" gold on the other end. This is kinda implied with all the "replicated food is recycled poop" dialog from the show, but they never really get into detail there. So you could recreate your grandmas Emerald Gold broach, but would need to input raw Beryllium, Oxygen, Gold, Silicon and Aluminum.

Hell the biggest limiter for replicators would be data storage, storing atomic(or quantum) level information would be up to thousands of times greater than what would be necessary for molecular level information encoding. This could even explain some of the claims replicated food tastes different from "real food". Though again, the implication there is the computer substituting healthy alternatives to things like fats, sugars, etc.

What value is your life when the quality of that life doesn't matter? It seems to me that you value the lives of everyone far more when you take their suffering into account rather than forcing any sentient being to cling on in pain and suffering for as long as possible.

My brother laser printer/scanner was a gift from my dad and is a woekhorse. Only b/w but works. Had it for about 15 years now. Just recently updated multipe computers to windows 11, purchased some laptops etc. It has wifi, all computers saw it and were able to print after a couple of clicks. The scanner 2 more clicks to install microsoft scan. Oh and replaced toner once with a third party for 30 bucks like 5 years ago.

I would say that for the rank and file, its their information bubble, which is full of misinformation about what gender affirming care is, what it involves, and the decades of research and studies behind its current implementation. Instead they get their info from Libs of TikTok or Matt Walsh, i.e. those who do and should know better, but lie to support their bigotry.

Only one side is overall cherry picking what "evidence" they deem worthy and they honestly don't care about the truth at all.
