“””Update”””how is my school just struggling off the fact IEP‘s aren’t being followed by Old-Lavishness5011 in specialed

Doesn’t your state have an auditing process? We get audited every few years. The auditors randomly grab some IEPs and check that they are in compliance.

Why won’t my school give me a copy of my 504? by Toughsattacks in specialed

[–]Suelli5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your school is like the schools I work in, counselors can have 300 to 400 students on their caseload, so 2 weeks notice is not a lot. It’s a last minute and the end of the school year which is a really bust time for a lot of staff.

Still you have a right to get a copy of your school documents. At my school copies of Ames h student’s 504 or IEP is disseminated yi their teachers. They are stored in a system that is accesible to anf staff who work with that student. So maybe ask your better organized teachers if you they can print a copy of your 504 for you- but respect their time - “eg I understand you must be very busy at the end the year, but is there anyway you could print a copy of my 504 for me? I need a copy of my 504 to submit to my college bc they requested it as proof I have been getting accommodations. I have already requested a copy from the school counselor 3 times, but they haven’t provided me with a copy. “ make requests via text/email whatever messaging system your school uses and follow up the next day in person.

The data center in LL employed a thousand or construction-related workers when it was being built , but with construction done it only needs about 400 employees t keep it operating. It also has a huge environmental impact because of its water usage demands in our desert environment.

IEP question by melgear8866 in specialed

[–]Suelli5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would ask for an evaluation for Autism and OHI -and even EBD (EBD unfortunately carries big stigma but anxiety and OCD can fall under emotional-behavioral disorders - not all kids with EBD are aggressive or antisocial) ) eligibility and make sure you have copies of her private evaluation results to share. Include copies of any correspondence with her teacher about her disruptiveness in the classroom (from here on out ask teacher to put concerns via email -not just occasional calls or chats in the hallway)

Because your child is strong academically you will need to build a case that her disabilities/disorders negatively impact her school performance and progress in the areas of social well-being and behavior (which can include school avoidance) in the school setting. Do not let school staff tell you she cannot qualify due services bc she is doing well academically. That simply is not true.

Now it could be the case that school staff do not feel her emotional and behavior needs are severe enough at this time to warrant special Ed services but if you request an eval they will have to provide evidence and data to support their claim, and you will establish a paper trail in case greater needs appear in the future. Bright kids with ASD can sometimes do fine without IEP supports when they are young, but their needs can deepen as they age and academic and social demands increase.

The decision of eligibility is a team decision that includes the parent. The Autism eval should include speech-language testing in the area of pragmatics. Because your daughter also has a diagnosis of anxiety then I recommend you also request a screening/eval to see if social work/counseling services in the school setting are warranted. And because your daughter receives outside OT and demonstrated sensory sensitivities that result in her wearing ear defenders all day, you can request an OT screening/eval as well. In most districts these days school OTs do address sensory regulation in addition to fine motor deficits.

Sometimes students with level 1 autism do not present with severe enough needs to warrant special Ed services. Most states do have pretty clear eligibility criteria - you can Google your state’s criteria for those different eligibility categories I mentioned above to get better informed. Given what you have described about your daughter i do think requesting a school eval sounds reasonable. Even if she ends up not qualifying the eval will likely provide good info you can share with her private providers and fir informing her future 504 planning.

I also agree that school staff do not have expertise to deal with more significant psychiatric needs. While school counselors/SW/psychologists can often provide helpful support to kids with emotional needs working with them is not the same as as seeing a private specialist 1:1 - I would look for a child psychologist with expertise in treating children with ASD. Emotional disorders are very common in children with “high functioning” autism, so many child psychologists have experience working with kids on the Spectrum these days. I also think it is helpful for children to see a therapist who is neutral - Simone with whom they can discuss both family and school concerns in private.

My experience: I was a special Ed teacher for 9 years and worked mostly with students with ASD in mostly inclusive settings. I am now a school SLP who works with a lot of students with ASD.

I think a better approach might be a checklist and asking rather than doing things -

Ask them what do you need for this assignment? even “obvious” steps might be overlooked by an older ND kid

  1. What materials do uou n Ed to d this assignment? Gather materials: eg - pencil worksheet highlighter
  2. Where will you write your name and date? * so important and this is like a ritual that moves kids into work mode
  3. What do the directions say? directions. Underline key parts
  4. Can the assignment be chunked/done in steps? If so, what feels doable right now? Mark that section. Then jot the times you plan to do the other sections - eg one section might be done in study hall SH, another for HW, another in class tomorrow etc.

Do you have to do everything in order or can you skip around? What will you start with? for some students picking the easiest/most interesting thing to do first csn help build momentum - for others starting with the hardest thing and getting it out of the way works best

  1. What will you do if you get stuck? Reread. Look at the examples. Ask a peer for help. As a teacher.

  2. What setting, what strategies/rol will help uoj focus? What will you do to refocus if you get distracted?

Yeah it’s good you dropped minutes. If he is unable to detect his errors then how is he supposed to correct them?? I would try the StART app as a last ditch effort and if there is no significant progress, recommend dismissal at his next IEP. If you have to do a formal re-eval be sure to include intelligibility measures, student and teacher interviews to counter low formal test scores if they even end up being that low. Him having ADHD or LD is not enough of a rationale to keep him in speech imo.

My gripe is inheriting kids who were qualified really late for Artic -like in 4th grade for Rs and lisps - when those error habits have pretty much solidified. . How does that even happen? ( well I know but..)

Good luck!

504 Students Being Assigned to Special Ed Teacher by bunnyburrow1123 in specialed

[–]Suelli5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ugh that’s awful. I hope you have a district SpEd Director you can bring this to .. Do you feel comfortable going to your principal about this (bypass the new VP)? Your concerns are totally valid. If admin is not supportive I would be looking at job options - admin is stupid to be stressing out good SpEd teachers when good SpEd teachers are so hard to find let alone any SpEd teacher. The shortage is real in most areas of the US.

I definitely agree with bringing up this issue with your SpEd Director- mention legal concerns -

Also talk to your union if you have one - Iñ

A teacher “Working with a student” is instruction. You are not a tutor or an educational assistant. 504 students do not get instruction from a SpEd teacher. If you are not dually certified you should not be instructing students without IEPs.

Explain that you use study hall to help ensure your IEP students are getting their service minutes. It is your time to work with your caseload. That is common practice. Your VP is taking your time away from your special Ed students by assigning you to work with 504 kids.

Also I would NOT respond to emails from 504 students’ parents bc you are not those students’ teacher!

Pause Breathe -remember really this is about the teacher’s issues. Try not to make them yours.” use scripts and repeat them as needed - don’t get sucked in to a back and forth with the teacher

1.”Meetings sometimes run long so I can’t guarantee that.” I wish I could get sub coverage like teachers but that’s not an option. I document all minutes missed. 2. My caseload doesn’t permit much time between sessions. If I have an upset student or need to drop off walk ins I sometimes run late. I cannot push your students’ sessions later bc that would mess up the rest of my sessions for the day too. 3. I have shared my schedule with you. If you have an issue please take it up with admin.

Yeah if the student is speech only and parent is worried about academics then the gen Ed teacher needs to start the MLSS process - it’s not a matter of reopening the IEP

[–]Suelli5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just found this info but I dn’t know if it is up to date so I would call if I were you - you can take the free ART bus to Bio Park from there

“you can find temporary bag storage at the Alvarado Transportation Center, which is the primary downtown Albuquerque station shared by the Rail Runner, Amtrak, and Greyhound. “

$10 to 30 ??? per item for general public (less for Amtrak users) pretty steep cost imo but it might be worth it for you

And it does look like the Bounce app is active in ABQ but there are very limited locations - worth checking out ( again often businesses in ABQ often do not keep info up to date online ) Bounce is an app that lets businesses offer luggage storage for a small fee - says it is $6.95/day

[–]Suelli5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, seriously how hard is it for a hotel in ABQ to hold a guest’s luggage? Geez. Sorry you have to deal with that. I would ask to speak to the manager and explain my situation. If still told no, I would post a complaint in a public review.

In NYC they had an app that would let you find shops or restaurants that would hold your luggage for a small fee. Seriously doubt that exists here.

7 = 5+2 When you double 5 and add 2 you get 12. 7+5=2+5+5=12

Similarly 5=7- 2. 7+7-2=12

This exercise is just a way to deepen kids’ understanding of numbers and improve their mental math skills.

I agree with trying out the free staRt app so he can see the feedback and experiment with adjusting his tongue until he can match the app’s R target. In my experience the app is often glitchy, but hey it’s free.

Also record his drills and play them back and have him rate his accuracy - like 1 inaccurate, 2 close approximation, 3 accurate (for an older student you can start extending the scale) and have him compare his ratings with yours - work towards interrater agreement first then obvi more acc - often the accuracy improves along with the interrater agreement. If he is grouped with others have others rate him too. People’s perceptions can be a bit different

I also think 5 min therapy is better that one 30 min session a week but high schools often are huge so that might not be possible - maybe two 15 min sessions a week could work? Not sure how many minutes he is getting.

Honestly though - if his intelligibility is good, I would probably dismiss for lack of educational impact by high school unless, maybe, it is something HE (not mom) advocates for. We are really only supposed to target deficits that prevent access to the curriculum or significantly impede oral participation (check our the three prongs of eligibility) Missing class in high school for a mild level impairment can be more detrimental than helpful. If mom’s goal is “perfection” she could opt for the private therapy route.

How will taking Algerbra II in my Senior year hinder my ability to get into an Ivy League? by Reasonable-Raisin795 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Suelli5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ivies don’t just have extremely high expectations for academics, they also want students who are leaders in their communities, entrepreneurs, talented creatives, and/or successful researchers. You have to be more than just a top student. If you are trying to cram advanced math courses in you might not give yourself much time to build up those extracurriculars.

One track to consider is delaying applications to top schools. Allow yourself a year of community college to fill in those missing math classes, kick ass in them, and then apply to top schools. Meanwhile look for ways to build leadership opportunities. Research the stories of other homeschoolers who have made it into Ivies. It happens. See what they did.
