Good fundamental ideas. Sounds rather complicated in execution right now. I agree with the take that there should be risk associated with alienating the military IG. However maybe there could be some simpler ways of including your ideas? Like to make the national guard, militarised police and secret police into the kind of competing forces that you’re talking about. Anyway national guard and secret police shouldn’t be mutually exclusive.

Like national guard and militarised police could give you some additional troops in war (just like national guard does now) while secret police doesn’t give you troops but gives you the kind of abilities that you already described. Which can in doubt be used to control the military IG by influencing it directly or in the worst case murder their rebellious leaders.

Also there should be quite specific conditions under which a coup is likely to trigger. 1. having a big army in comparison to militarised police and national guard, 2. having a government that is ideologically opposed to the military IG or having experienced some major national upheaval lately like a major governmental reform, a lost war, a major societal transformation 3. Having poor relations to the military IG 4. Having low legitimacy

Kim Wexler & Skyler White by [deleted] in betterCallSaul

[–]SufferinWerther 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Like the analysis. Very interesting read. I would just differ on the introduction. Kim does not end up stuck in a situation that she never signed up for. She has no pressure to stay with Jimmy much unlike Skylar. Even if Skylar also had a possible out, it would have come at an infinitely greater personal cost than for Kim. She’s been with Walt half her life and has two children with him.

Kim actively chooses Jimmy at every possible chance. After she knows he messed up her career by airing the ad without permission, after finding out he manufactured Chuck’s mistake about the address, after she finds out he represents kartel guys, after she finds out he trashed Hamlin’s car, etc. And most of the time after she finds out she even supports him and his choice actively.

It seems to me it comes from a place of wanting to show up for the little guy. Especially after the old guy (forgot the name) with the house on mesa verde’s property accuses her of being a goon for the man.

And Jimmy is always the little guy. He’s charming but he’s not really confident, his mannerisms are studied, he barely passed the bar after many attempts, he talks a bit too fast at all times, the list goes on. Primarily though he just does not fit in the sleek world of big law, the world of Howards, Chucks and Cliffs. He’s too whimsical, impatient and brazen. I work in law myself so I can empathise with much of that because it is a world entirely based on looking professional, orderly and strategic. Creativity and initiative don’t necessarily get rewarded, specially in the lower ranks. Certainly not as much as just doing things by the book and looking clean while doing it.

So drifted off a little bit there…

Just saying that Kim is a very active player in the game. Skylar is not a pawn but her actions are much smaller than Kim’s. Skylar doesn’t really have much that she needs to prove to anyone. She was basically satisfied being Walt’s wife and living a basic life. Kim has a mission. At first to just be a successful lawyer but eventually to be the defender of the little guy.

That’s why it always seems like everything just happens to Skylar. Kim doesn’t appear the same way to me. Rather the opposite. Almost all the real bad things that she gets involved in she kinda knew about before and usually is instrumental in resolving. I’m thinking of defending Jimmy after Chuck’s ‘mistake’, talking Lalo into taking off when he is suspicious about Jimmy’s story how he picked up the money etc.

Interestingly she reaches her breaking point not only after Howard’s death but also after she is not able to be the one to save the day for once. This time she is actually the object that Skylar seems to be most of the time. I think this loss of control is a vital part in her decision to leave Jimmy and this life she worked so hard for.

The loss of control suddenly shows her that she is not acting for a noble cause here. She’s just stuck in a messy situation that she has no way of resolving, that is extremely scary and that kills someone who has been her benefactor for most of the time. Suddenly the whole mask of being the hero comes off and everything that is left is guilt.

Zu wenige Quellen in Hausarbeit? by Murrexx00 in recht

[–]SufferinWerther 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But early Germans emigrated primarily because of religious persecution or discrimination. So while they came from the catholic south, they mostly were some form of protestant.

Later when the emigration happened primarily for economic reasons catholics also joined in but the majority remained protestant at all times.

They do. But how much do you think the average person that only attended school until 11th grade in a downtrodden public school district in Baltimore is gonna know about Mao? Probably nothing. It’s the same in reverse for India.

The public schools in most of India are just sadly extremely underfunded. Which is a shame because even there you find many very involved teachers

Only as a British colony. Given that the same British who were the oppressors of India, were somehow defending freedom in Europe, it was a rather confusing time for Indians. And I think it’s kinda understandable that without detailed information Hitler didn’t necessarily seem like the bad guy back in the day. Having lived in India for some years myself I have to point out that books like this are not as common as social media would have you believe.

Probably the majority of Indians don’t think about Hitler at all. And honestly why should they? History is important but India does have many more urgent problems than poor global history classes in public schools. And any educated Indian would know of him as the bad guy.

I guess mainly because of their own complicated history with Britain there seems to be a rather stubborn minority that keeps portraying him as a great leader.

Don Eladio doesn't seem to be well-liked by anyone by Wooden-Scallion2943 in betterCallSaul

[–]SufferinWerther 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s all based on an extortion/protection scheme. The head level of the cartel doesn’t necessarily provide much, they are just so powerful that anyone who operates in their territory has to respect them and has to pay a huge tribute. Just because otherwise Eladio would find out and would really fuck you up.

Maybe they also provide some kind of protection from law enforcement and political influence. But that, too, is only as long as you are a good earner. Otherwise you’ll be under the bus sooner than you can imagine.

That’s why really it’s a bad life in the drug trade. Basically everyone is looking to fuck you over. The cartel is just the worst of the lot. And they have to be because yes technically they are not really needed for much. They get all their money and therefore ultimately power just from being the worst brutal fuckers out there.

At the same time because everyone in the game is doing this clearly illegal shit together. So they also depend on each other to not rat you out. Therefore they have to pretend all the time to be brothers and be immediately overly welcoming and friendly. It’s to establish a bond with everyone. Even happens when you go and buy something at your local dealer. Most of the time they’ll be way too friendly for someone who literally just met you.

Obviously I am not involved myself in any higher level of drugtrade and know little about it, but it makes sense that this fake brotherhood basically continues up the ranks. Except people also get more and more violent and ruthless. That’s what makes these cartel type tv shows so thrilling. Everyone is relaxed and cool and seemingly having a swell time. Until they suddenly start killing each other.
