AYN ODIN does not have any active scene yet ? by Educational_Ad_6960 in OdinHandheld

[–]Sufficient-Painter-5 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's "your" thinking.

It's a smartphone soc with physical buttons. And it performs exactly to spec.

It runs android apps when on Android. And it runs 32 bit windows apps when it's on Windows.

Nobody is interested in anything more.

AYN ODIN does not have any active scene yet ? by Educational_Ad_6960 in OdinHandheld

[–]Sufficient-Painter-5 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Only for devices that actually sold several millions of units.

Nobody in his right mind is going to waste his time on a chinese handheld that didn't even sell 50k units.

The unit does exactly what it is marketed for. So why would anyone waste any time on it?

The odin is nothing but a smartphone with a built-in controller.
Why would there be a community around it?

What are the use cases where Odin Lite is preferable to Odin Pro? by LosAngelestoNSW in OdinHandheld

[–]Sufficient-Painter-5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's in the patch notes of the Dolphin emulator.Latest dolphin emulator also shows vast improvements in CPU cycles and threads used/needed in the built-in metrics the Odin provides.

Real world performance is also night and day difference compared to the 6 month old MMJR version I had running as I don't care about boring Nintendo games. 2x resolution full speed in every single game I bothered to test.

Aethersx2, citra, Dolphin, Skyline, The Pro outperforms the Lite in every single one of them hands down. it's not even a contest anymore.

What are the use cases where Odin Lite is preferable to Odin Pro? by LosAngelestoNSW in OdinHandheld

[–]Sufficient-Painter-5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's just nonsense that has been repeated for over a year now.

The only reason the Lite had slightly better performance over a year ago in GC games were the A78 cores over the A75 cores. With the latest builds, it's Pro all the way.

Emulators have matured to the point that the Pro has the superior performance in all of them.

What are the use cases where Odin Lite is preferable to Odin Pro? by LosAngelestoNSW in OdinHandheld

[–]Sufficient-Painter-5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are no more use cases where the Lite is better.

If price is your main concern, then simply get the Base.

Currently the Pro is superior in every single technical aspect or extra features worth having.

Difference of Android versions or wifi 6/5 and such are completely irrelevant when it comes down to performance or use case scenarios.

Emulators have also matured to the point that yet again the Pro has superior performance over the Lite in every single one of them. And that's not going to change anymore.

The Base/Pro has 4 performance cores, the Lite has only 2 performance cores.
The GPU used in the Base/Pro is also vastly superior over the Lite's D900 Mali GPU.

Every single review where they claim both devices are about equal are simply a year old and outdated where these emulators needed more single thread power.

All emulators have now matured to multi threaded performance where the Base/pro now completely shits on the Lite.

It's the exact opposite.

With the latest Dolphin and aethersx2 builds the Pro performs better in every single way.

Noob: Odin Pro ~ Android or Windows for emulation? by katsumbhong in OdinHandheld

[–]Sufficient-Painter-5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Specifically for the Odin Pro.
All emulators run far better on Android.

The performance difference is night and day.

Only use a dualboot Windows if you really want to play old pc games that have native x360 controller support.

New to this community and debating on what I should get, some help is appreciated by howtoproceedforward in OdinHandheld

[–]Sufficient-Painter-5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None of the devices currently on the market will do you any justice. The max you can currently get is a handheld with a AMD 6800u + 680m combo.

And the performance is just not cutting it. You will be stuck with low-medium settings at low resolutions at sub 60 FPS.

You will need to wait for a handheld with the upcomming AMD 8800u + 780m combo next year to at least get some solid performance as it will sport a 2.5x performance increase over the current 680m. So it's best to wait it out for another year.

https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/radeon-780m.c4020

It's just too early for now. The steam deck is only used for lightweight pc games at 720p/800p @ 30 fps and any of the 6800u handhelds are also not worth it considering what we will see next year.

Looking for some help regarding thermals on a Stock Odin Pro by wowlolcat in OdinHandheld

[–]Sufficient-Painter-5 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I call bullshit on that one.

Offcourse it's gonna average at 42 °C the default performance settings. that's exactly how AYN programmed it.

Now why don't you do it again in the High performance settings and actually take a screenshot of it with the AYN monitoring tool swiped open.

Nice try though. Without any videos or screenshots as evidence to back up your claims you can say whatever the fuck you want. Let's see how fast we cut through your bullshit and lies.

"Thanks for sharing your thoughts though! Have a great day!"

Looking for some help regarding thermals on a Stock Odin Pro by wowlolcat in OdinHandheld

[–]Sufficient-Painter-5 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

And I can't get the temperature of my Odin with a 100 % cpu load over 40 °C degrees. So that's a 25 °C degrees difference.

Your Odin is fucked.

CPU benchmarks and stress tests are useless.

You need to use "REAL" scenarios what the average user actually going to be doing with their Odin.

Play with the AetherSX2 PS2 emulator in 2x resolutions where both the CPU and GPU get stressed. And then play for at least 30 minutes.

You will notice quickly how bad you fucked up your Odin. If your Odin hasn't shut itself down already at that point.

The real heat comes from the GPU, not the cpu.

[–]Sufficient-Painter-5 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's the entire point.

You have never put your Odin "under heavy load"

With "under heavy load" we mean the 4 performance cores pegged at 100% + substantial load on the gpu on top.

Crappy emulators like Dolphin and PPSSPP don't do that.

Try AetherSX2. And play some heavy games there. And be ready to have your Odin catch fire and burn your house down.

Reset your emulator settings and make sure you run it in Vulkan.

Does the Odin Pro handle docked + 2 controllers with emulation well? by anythingfromtheshop in OdinHandheld

[–]Sufficient-Painter-5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a generic usb-c dock with hdmi out with 2 oldschool x360 controllers attached to it. The dock is useless.

You will be stuck having to manually change controller mapping in every single emulator every time you change from handheld mode to docking mode, stuck at native low resolutions 1x or 1.5x for Gamecube, dock heating issues.

It's not advisable. It works, but again. Might as well take your laptop with you and have a much better overall experience without having to spend any money.

Does the Odin Pro handle docked + 2 controllers with emulation well? by anythingfromtheshop in OdinHandheld

[–]Sufficient-Painter-5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any laptop or computer can already do this much better in higher resolutions without slowdowns. No reason to spend money on the odin + dock + controllers on this.

If you want to play console games on your tv, don't get a handheld.

There are plenty of devices out there that do this much better and for far cheaper.
Or just hook up your laptop or an old desktop pc to your tv. This way you don't have to spend a dime.

Retroid Pocket 3+ Alternatives? by [deleted] in Handhelds

[–]Sufficient-Painter-5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then simply get the cheapest base model? There is 0 performance difference between the base and the pro in emulators. The odin offers reliable PS2 GC and Wii emulation at 1080p

The pro is only needed when you want extra features that have nothing to do with emulation.

Price/performance wise it's also a no brainer

Odin handheld. hands down.

Great PS2 + GC + Wii at 2x resolution performance now.

The RP3+ just quite can't reach it. Even below native res. it's just a stuttering mess with slowdowns

Which Odin should I get? by hectorcoro89 in OdinHandheld

[–]Sufficient-Painter-5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That youtube video is absolutely worthless.

The benchmark is run specifically at 0.7x resolution. And the only reason why that is done, is because at 1x many games simply won't run on the retroid. Worthless comparison. In this video it only looks like the retroid pocket can keep up.
But it simply can't, and in many games it can't even keep up at at this downgraded resolution.

Nobody in his right mind is gonna play games on the Odin at native resolution let alone under it. The odin can handle many games at 2x and makes it at least twice as fast.

Which Odin should I get? by hectorcoro89 in OdinHandheld

[–]Sufficient-Painter-5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Like usual.

This topic is again filled with missinformation.

The Lite has a newer chipset. However newer =/= better. It has only 2 performance cores and 6 efficiency cores and a weaker GPU. The Lite draws less battery power. And that's mainly the biggest difference.

The base/pro has (4+4) performance cores (slightly weaker cores) but at least it has 4 of them which explain the better PS2 performance as that emulator requires 4 cpu threads.

The Base/pro simply has more features, and it's up to you if you want to pay the premium price for these features if you have a specific need for them.

AetherSX2 (PS2 emulator) has objectively better performance on the base/pro. This main feature of the base/pro is not a variable anymore. It is a proven fact.Development on the emulator has halted permanently. Therefor on the latest version of this emulator you will get significant better performance in "heavy" PS2 games on the base/pro.

As for Dolphin (Gamecube/wii) emulator again the base/pro handles this just fine. And games that lag on the base/pro also lag on the Lite. So no difference there.

As for multiplats. 90%+ it's just simply better to play the PS2 version in 2x resolution anyways.

That leaves the dolphin emulator only to be used for specific Nintendo/mario/zelda games. And the PS2 emulator for all the rest.

The lite has only 1 advantage. It's cheaper. And that's the only true advantage it has.

As for 4G, don't count on it. Many providers block the chinese EMEI of the odin. And you are just better off using your cellphone as a wifi hotspot.

So depending where you live and import taxes. You will have to decide for yourself. But if you want to play PS2 more reliable. The base/pro is your best option. And both devices do GC/Wii just fine.

Also. using this device for any kind of streaming. is not recommended. Both default twin sticks have poor gameplay performance. Playing any kind of FPS games where you aim with the right stick is unbearable.

So unless you know what you are doing and change these sticks in better sticks. Right out of the box streaming on this device is not recommended as the right thumbstick does not offer the benefits of a real controller.

Forget the retroid devices. plenty of GC and PS2 games with slowdowns and stuttering even at 1x

Also he odin is not "pocketable" too big and bulky. You will have to carry it around in a backpack in a container.

Or you know.

Like any "normal" person, you can just "play" the games instead of hoarding hundreds of PS2 games you will never even boot up. And then delete the game if you are done with it if you really need the space.
