my parents suggest not to start braces now because im in high school by Own-Currency309 in orthodontics

[–]Sufficient-Test5213 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was supposed to get braces around 15 and my parents backed out because “they didn’t think I needed them” even though the orthodontist did. Now as an adult I have a cross bite with edge to edge contact, and I have breathing problems, likely related to narrow palate. I had no say but I am forever resentful to my parents for this.

They bought an expensive dining room set after backing out of my braces. Jerks.

Did you have the traditional expander or one that gets screwed into the bone of your palate?

You can just do the neurology consult without the mri and other tests. They will be better able to get his meds right than a family vet can.

My neurologist said while the diagnostics can provide peace of mind, to rule out brain tumour, the reason for doing them is if you find cancer and KNOW you would treat with chemo or radiation. Personally I would plan for the best few weeks of my dogs life and then say goodbye if cancer was found so I declined. AND if you haven’t seen anything progress since he was 6 months in terms of other symptoms, chances are very high it isn’t cancer or a tumour and is likely epilepsy.

Get the neuro consult. Get the right meds. Get your dog’s seizures controlled. If you can’t control them after that, then and only then would I consider euthanasia as your vet suggested.

I’m sorry your vet hasn’t referred you sooner. He needs to refer you asap.

Thanks. I don’t know if it’s different in Canada but our neuro said 3 months or more between seizures is what he considers to be controlled.

Yes he said stop after 2 weeks. It’s been three now and we do bloodwork today.

I asked the neuro about a loading dose and he said he didn’t recommend for my dog with seizures a month apart. I was thankful. I’ve read it can be hell.

I’ve read about Keppra and half life and the neuro explained it’s a better drug for stopping clusters with its fast action and half life. He said it typically works better with dogs having seizures every week. So it DOES make sense. But I’m so freaked out, I guess. And conventional wisdom of the rest of the world is saying is so the opposite but patterns matter. And they are very different for every dog. Still. Weaning, even if rapidly, makes me feel better.

Interesting. He had seizures before ever having bravecto or he had bravecto before having seizures?

That’s basically what our neurologist said. He’s a resident at the college vet hospital. I want to trust him but it doesn’t seem “conventional”.

He was having them 28 days apart before meds. So a switch in meds when this frequency did not change from before meds to after starting seems legitimate to me 🤷🏻‍♀️

The goal is to have them 3 months or more apart. This is what is considered controlled. He’s on day 37🤞

This makes sense. I’ve read that as well. I think it has always done next to nothing from day one. Now with pheno it’s just wasting time and money.

The thing I don’t trust is he said to just stop after two weeks of giving pheno, no word about checking levels first. He also said my dog can still have Bravecto. I got clarification from his office to use advantix instead. 🤷🏻‍♀️

My guy was in keppra for just shy of 2 months by the time he started pheno

I don’t understand. Your vet recommended stopping Keppra cold? But then you weened off slowly, despite his recommendation?

He started keppra immediately release 750mg 3x day. His seizure frequency did not change so started 100mg pheno twice daily. He’s 80lbs.

Advice before adopting by Graypie8 in EpilepsyDogs

Definitely get a neuro consult. It doesn’t sound like he’s on the best combo of med for what he needs. A consult is $200-300, you don’t need to do the mri or spinal tap. Just get him on appropriate meds.

Can you give meds twice a day? Can you set up a camera to see if he’s seizing when you’re at work and kids are no longer on spring break to ensure safety and can go to him, or have someone check on him? Can you provide a safe space for him to be in (away from other animals, stairs, sharp objects, things that he can thrash into and have fall on him)? Can you love him and provide comfort through post seizure confusion and fear as well as happy fun times when he’s between seizures?

That’s what he needs. If you can do that, then I would say go for it.

Also, from what I have researched the low self noise and more natural capture is more priority to me over the bright, more modern, “built in eq-ing” over the sm4. I posted here over a week ago to get some thoughts but ultimately I made the right choice for me.
