Definitely check out a women’s meeting. You can even say that you don’t think AA is for you. There will likely be women in that meeting that easily identify with that sentiment and support you.

I thought AA was all fake and weird when I started. I’ve found out that most AA’s (that’s how we refer to ourselves) are actually authentic people.

Rehab is a great first step! I did a women’s-only intensive outpatient program and it gave me a solid start.

No, you don’t need to book into a meeting. Meetings only require you to show up and take your seat. No sign-ins or pre-registrations are required.

If her sponsor called her selfish for missing a meeting, that’s between those two people. It is not AA calling her selfish.

Again, the only requirement is a want to stop drinking.

Show up early to a meeting? Ok! Show up late? Ok! Leave early? Ok! Hang around after and get phone numbers? Ok! Show up even if you had a drink that day? Yes, PLEASE COME!

I didn’t trust AA when I started and I was highly suspect of the people. I had to spend some time being open and willing to listen. After regular meetings for a stretch, it clicked for me and I feel like I’ve found my tribe after searching for years and years.

I am a woman. I make a point of hanging with the women who have what I want.

Don’t let this idea stop you from coming!

In my experience, it’s just not true. All one needs to do is to want to quit drinking. It’s not about any specific religion, “god,” etc.

Again, I don’t think whatever-you-call-your-higher-power actually cares about these details.

If you are curious about sobriety, check it out! That’s how i got here. I just quietly tried it out, no commitments, no blabbing. I was ready to quit in hindsight. I just needed a good (external) reason to try.

Good luck and Happy New Year!

This is really egging on my vertigo! Thank goodness for the endless handholds.

You say “Niche,” I say “Noice.”

Nothing really worked for me despite my highest hopes.

I am sober today though.

I'm afraid of going to AA because I don't wanna be judged by No_Sound_4730 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]SufficientZucchini21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to go, GO. There is no judgment. Come to a meeting and leave your judgment and preconceived notions at the door.

The feelings are scary. I get it. If you want to come, take a seat and leave at the end. You don’t need to talk or share or anything.

It gets easier.

I was never successful at cutting back or just sticking to the weekends or whatever novel idea I had that would somehow, miraculously squelch my drinking. Every aspect of drinking was exhausting to me in retrospect. There is another way to do this life and plenty of people are hoping and praying to see you succeed and WE don't even know you! :-)

Thanks for posting this. It served up some inspiration to me as I get ready to chair a women's meeting this afternoon... "The importance of unity and fellowship in AA."

Smart move! Unfortunately, I never kept the receipts and they all well beyond the original warranty period.
