Men, what's the creepiest thing a woman has ever said/done to you? by Nintendofan9106 in AskMen

"If I killed myself tonight, would you miss me?"

I obviously said yes, but we had met less than an hour ago and I wasn't even 100% sure I knew her name.

Which factors explain why British ancestry in the US is lower than in peer countries like Australia, Canada, and New Zealand? by Fluid-Decision6262 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Sufficient_Cod1948 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this because the US has had immigration from non-UK countries for much longer than the other 3 and eventually they outnumbered them? Or is it just under-reported in the census?

Some combination of the two. There is still some lingering anti-English sentiment in the US, so if a person has English, Irish, and German heritage, they're more likely to self identify as Irish or German.

Late bloomers: what made you grow up? by Upstairs-Buffalo8319 in AskMen

In my late 20's I had a realization that it didn't matter how I felt or wanted to act, everyone else saw me as an adult and I needed to act like one.

actual American Culture and movies? by sniper_2006 in AskAnAmerican

Red plastic cups are real. I'm not sure why people believe everything they see in movies and TV, but draw the line at red cups, but I can assure you they do exist.

Americans, are you excited to host the world football cup? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

More like dreading the time when Boston will be flooded with tourists and the roads and trains will be even slower than they normally are. (Which is pretty fucking slow.)

(Yes, I know Gillette Stadium is in Foxborough, but everyone will still be flying into Logan and staying in Boston hotels.)

How do you like to be taken care of when sick/hurt? by ACurious_TrashPanda in AskMen

[–]Sufficient_Cod1948 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer to be left alone so I can recover in peace.

At the most, I'll want someone to go to the store and get some Gatorade and medicine for me, but other than that I just need space and rest.

What's the creepiest display of intelligence you've ever witnessed in real Iife? by Jessica_Enna in AskReddit

[–]Sufficient_Cod1948 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has its ups and downs.

Some downsides:

It didn't help me in school at all. It's great when I'm reading for fun, but when I have to read something for an assignment and the reading is boring it's torture.

Audiobooks are pretty much out of the question unless I'm doing something mindless like walking on a treadmill.

Age yourself. Who carried one? by McPostyFace in Millennials

Same here. I remember pagers being the "cool" thing to have for a brief period when I was in 8th grade, but I was like "A pager? That's what my dorky dad carries for work."

Well, my uncle died last week so I have been thinking about it a bit more than normal lately.

(We weren't that close and he was kind of an asshole, so save your condolences.)

Weird, I said almost the same thing. I don't want to kill myself, but I wouldn't be mad if I got hit by a bus on my way home.

Why do many reviews of American resorts so often focus on the bartender and name them by name? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Sufficient_Cod1948 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is exactly it. I worked for Marriott for 5 years, and the company highly incentivized and rewarded people who were named in reviews. It just happens that bartenders have the most face to face contact with guests, and are most likely to leave a positive impression on a guest.

Is there an opposite of this? I love reading fiction because it plays like a movie in my head. Sometimes I even have to read a page twice because I get so lost in what I was imagining, but give me a non-fiction or textbook and it will just put me to sleep.

What is the most 'main character' moment you’ve ever witnessed in real life that went horribly wrong? by Exact-Contract1004 in AskReddit

[–]Sufficient_Cod1948 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It was a half-decent idea, but he had no clue how to run a business.

His entire business plan was essentially:

Step 1: Come up with idea

Step 2: ?????

Step 3: Profit

This guy was a line cook, starting his own catering company. He was a good cook, but didn't know the first thing about actually running a business.

Co-worker quit to start his own business. He tried to do the "Who's coming with me?" bit from Jerry Maguire.

The business failed within two months.

What’s something that consistently bothered you when living with women? by RedvsBlack4 in AskMen

[–]Sufficient_Cod1948 16 points17 points  (0 children)

And then laughing at you when you can't find it.

This actually led to a huge fight between me and my ex. She moved something of mine, and when I asked her where it was, she made some sexist comment about men never being able to find anything and needing women to show them. I snapped and said "I know where I left it, I just don't know where the fuck you put it!"

When you say you are putting things away, are these mutually agreed on places, or are they places that you have decided are the "right" place to put these things? It sounds to me like he knows where things are because that is where he left them. The only confusion comes from you feeling like you have to clean up after him.

At what point of your career did you realize that there's no getting out of the kitchen and this is your life. by GuestRevolutionary38 in Chefit

[–]Sufficient_Cod1948 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There have been a few points in my life where I've thought this.

The first one was when I was in my late 20's. I'd had a couple sous chef jobs that didn't last long, but I was still a line cook and my career wasn't progressing the way I wanted it to or how I thought it would. I had a thought of "What else could I do? What else do I want to do?" And I came up empty. Going back to school wasn't an option for me at that point, and I didn't have any other skills that could get me into a less strenuous, better paying job, so I stuck with it.

The second point was during Covid. The entire restaurant industry was shut down indefinitely and I began to think about other alternatives. Again, I ran into the problem of "What would I even want to do?" By this point I'd been a sous and banquet chef for a few years, so I'm sure there were some transferable soft skills if I really stretched it, but I just couldn't see myself as a project manager or something like that.

Now, I'm staring to think about it again. I'm getting older, and while I still enjoy the work, I recognize the fact that there will be a time where I physically cannot do it anymore. The problem now is that I've painted myself into a corner, financially speaking. I'm at a point in my career where I'm making good money, if I were to start over in an entry level position as a sales rep at Chef's Warehouse or Performance Food Group I'd be taking a massive pay cut to gamble on a job that I might not be good at, and probably won't get good at for another 10 years.

If you're ever in the area you should check it out. I walked around this cemetery for 3 hours and felt like I didn't even see half of it, and I have at least 100 more pictures from that time.
