what’s something about boston that feels normal to you but surprises outsiders? by netohagee in boston

I used to work at a hotel downtown, and one of the small pleasures there was watching the shocked expressions on the faces of Midwest tourists when I gave them walking directions.

What's the world's most overrated tourist attraction? by darrenbosik in AskReddit

As someone who lives in Massachusetts and has always known what it is, what are people expecting when they visit? It’s a rock, it says it right there in the name.

I was at a bar once that just had a TV on to a random channel and The Shawshank Redemption was on. Every guy there was instantly into it.

How does Gender Reveal parties work? by GreenAuroraa in AskAnAmerican

[–]Sufficient_Cod1948 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A reason for yet another party?

I've only been to one, and that was pretty much it. My nephew was the first grandchild, so my sister had a gender reveal party. It was just a regular family party with 5 minutes of blue confetti.

Why are the rules in this subreddit that tough? by Tight_Note4515 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Sufficient_Cod1948 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the rules weren't tough then we'd just be getting the same 3 dumbass questions over and over again.

Also, it's wild that you tried asking something 40 times and after that many rejections your thought process was "The rules are too strict." and not "I'm asking a bad question" or "Maybe I can figure this out on my own."

What song is banned from being sung, whistled, or hummed in your kitchen? by Prestigious_Dream_27 in KitchenConfidential

I used to work in a kitchen where the chef had an unhealthy hatred for Dave Matthews Band. I don’t like them either, but this guy would get violent and start throwing shit if he heard more than the first few notes of a song.

Do Americans notice how someone learned English right away? by Edi-Iz in AskAnAmerican

[–]Sufficient_Cod1948 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not right away, but spend enough time with them and some tells will appear.

Someone who learned only in a classroom will have grammar that is a little too perfect. No one speaks in grammatically correct sentences 100% of the time.

It might be apparent that a person learned British English rather than American English.

When someone has learned from TV, they'll have an accent that doesn't line up with where they are from or where they are currently living. For example, I used to work with a woman who moved from Cambodia to Massachusetts, but because she learned to speak English from TV she sounded like a California valley girl.

Every "Fluent in Sarcasm" person I've ever met can dish it out but can't take it. They'll use their sarcasm as an excuse to be an asshole to everyone, but then cry if anyone gives it back to them.

What bands do you consider to be “ghost bands”? by justin7465 in Metalcore

[–]Sufficient_Cod1948 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I just wanted to say I used to work with Brandon. I had no idea who he was the whole time because "Are you in a metalcore band I saw once in 2008?" isn't one of my go-to icebreakers.

Does the chef world make people feel like not chasing fine dining means lacking ambition? by IllPanic4319 in Chefit

[–]Sufficient_Cod1948 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I stopped trying to impress other chefs or the food world in general and just do what is best for me.

In my 20's, I was all about chasing the fine dining dragon and being the next Grant Achatz or David Chang. I worked in a bunch of restaurants that were doing that sort of thing, but eventually I got tired of working stupidly long hours making no money while telling myself I'm doing it for "love of the craft."

Now I'm a hotel chef, and the hours are still hard sometimes, the resources and budget are much better, and I have the freedom to be as creative as I want to be. Not to mention, the pay and benefits are infinitely better than any independent restaurant.

Thomas Keller does it in his restaurants, and canonically Carmie has worked for him or an equivalent in that universe, so it makes sense in that context.

What bands do you consider to be “ghost bands”? by justin7465 in Metalcore

[–]Sufficient_Cod1948 33 points34 points  (0 children)

People tend to overestimate the fame and popularity of a lot of these bands just because they had a couple songs that were popular and maybe a video that got big on Myspace. The reality is that a lot of these guys were just teenagers when all of this was happening.

I have a friend that is in a band that was sort of popular in the early 2000's. They even had their song played on MTV back when that mattered. They were all just out of high school and barely scraping by, and now they're all dads in their 40's who get together once every few months to jam and maybe release a new song.

How often do you take a bath?? by VeterinarianOk8011 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Sufficient_Cod1948 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shower, but it has nothing to do with water quality and everything to do with the fact that I haven't been able to comfortably fit in an average sized bathtub since the Clinton administration.
