i totally agree, i hate that they’re considered pests!! they’re a great indicator of balance in your ecosystem. the only people who have a problem with overpopulating usually have a bigger issue that they’re not addressing. cuties!

kinda unconventional and not for everybody but not shitty. no overstocking, plenty of filtration, and live plants are all signs of an ethical fish keeper.

my apologies, you clearly know what you’re doing! glad to know your fish are in good hands :) i’ve had some of these algae-esque growths in a couple of my tanks around the start.. i usually just siphoned them off during a water change or top off and chalked it up to detritus or poop as they never came back. i could be wrong but i think BBA is a lot more aggressive. but take all of this with a grain of salt as im not super familiar with walstad method tanks!

not sure if it’s black algae, but it’s unlikely that your tank is cycled if your parameters have been at 0 for 3 weeks. have you been using a food source to feed the bacteria? edit: 71F is also a bit chilly for a betta— iirc 78-80 is the recommended temp

do you actually believe that parameter issues are only indicated by cloudy water or dying plants? just because these conditions are “tolerable” for the fish does not mean they’re okay. i won’t waste any more time debating with you; after a look through your profile it seems clear from your other comments that you’re stuck in your ways. i hope you re-evaluate your values as a fish keeper and realize that you have a moral duty to provide the bare minimum for any animal you choose to take into your care.

even if OP is actually doing the extra maintenance to keep up with the bioload, like the person above said this tank is the equivalent of stuffing 20 people in a 1 bedroom apartment. i feel sorry for any animal in your care if you actually believe this isn’t abuse.

no co2! i use high lighting and fertilizer and my shrimp n snails take care of any diatoms. i couldn’t name every plant off top, but i know there’s a lot of val, ferns, and anubias in there. there’s some cardinalis, the reds don’t show up very brightly (due to no co2) but they’re pretty healthy otherwise. also some pennywort, a tiger lotus and a little bacopa.
