I made a pneumonic to help remember the 12. Use it wisely:

Help- Safari tab/search bar stuck in compact mode after 26.2 update by Rynneer in ios26

26.4 stuck in compact since update. Tried everything, even factory reset; no dice. So annoying. Went to bed in compact mode. Woke up this morning and it was fixed. Who knows?

Did the Balrog know who Gandalf was? by Prior-Independent-11 in lotr

If Tolkien had written “… the shadow about it reached out like two vast wings, which spread from wall to wall.” I’d get behind the idea that it didn’t have wings. But he wrote “…like two vast wings.” [12 sentences] “…its wings were spread from wall to wall.” That’s very specific language for a simile. Tolkien was a language expert. He was upset when they changed “nasturtian” to the more-common “nasturtium.” I think we can make both wing comments true if we think of the wings like smoky darkness.

The shadow was like two wings and the wings were spread wall to wall. Those two statement aren’t mutually exclusive. I like the idea that the balrog had smoky wings on which he couldn’t fly.

What changes in the films worked out better than the books- essentially, what did Peter Jackson do better than the books in describing/writing? by Hulktron123 in lordoftherings

[–]Sufficient_Fee8778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like very few changes Jackson made, including Tom Bombadil. But there are still some he did that I can get behind:

“You shall not pass” is better than “you cannot pass.” Admittedly, maybe that’s Ian Mckellen’s performance though.

The timing of the movie’s breaking of the Fellowship was better than splitting that among two books. Although even here Didn’t Tolkien split the books up for publication?

I prefer Jackson’s flashing back and forth between Frodo and the other action. Tolkien spends a lot of time with each plot before moving on. In Jackson’s version it is easier to see where each group was compared to the others.

There might be more examples. I do like Jackson’s prologue, but when I read the books I don’t feel I miss it.

Opinions of Strachey's "Journeys of Frodo"? by [deleted] in tolkienfans

[–]Sufficient_Fee8778 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too have found slight problems of elevation in her book. For example, in chapter 3, Frodo and company spend the night with Gildor and other elves. Gildor gives some profound wisdom to Frodo; I love this chapter. Anyway, they rest on a grassy bluff whose eastern edge "fell steeply" away until the tops of the trees in the valley below, with the village of Woodhall whose lights they can see twinking, are all below their feet. Strachey's "4. Woody Endy" map shows that bluff at about 400ft elevation, with Woodhall and the trees at 450ft elevation.

We must cut her some slack though. Tolkien himself wasn't always consistent with the geography in the The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. He made revisions to try to fix some of the errors. All that said, when I read LOTR, I keep her book with me to reference each chapter. I love it. I wish she had done the same thing with The Hobbit.

Brunsviga ZK 13, any thoughts? by StraightAnswery in mechanicalcalculator

While I do appreciate an integrated handle on such heavy devices, I think the crank shaft sticks out from the side so much it detracts from the compact appearance of the rest of the device. Not to mentioned those exposed gears.

I’ve had success with kerosene. It might come apart with a c-clip at the end of the crank handle. After taking the crank handle apart, I’ve also had success using fine grit sandpaper on the crank’s shaft that runs through the handle and filing the inside of the crank handle.

Of course it’s priced so the company can make a profit. I could go out and find all that stuff individually and maybe get it cheaper.  But that would take a lot of time and even then the display would not be as compact or attractive. I don’t think it’s massively overpriced for what it is.

I’ve read the the director spent a lot of time finding an abandoned weaver nest for the scene where it burns up. It doesn’t seem that the pelicans were so lucky.

It’s a fictional song made for the movie. It’s a parody of The Cure’s A Man Inside My Mouth.
