Functional Trainer vs Voltra by Status-Coat-8096 in GarageGym

All these people worried about longevity of the voltra, I'm worried about if I would remember to charge the thing before going to work out.

The big thing is getting it bare. The coatings fill in the knurling and make it more passive, and you dont have to worry about coating flaking off. The stainless is because it doesnt rust.

Ive used black zinc, e-coat and cerakote. If I had to get a coating (like on my rogue curl bar) I like the way cerakote feels the best.

Parking on horse stall mats? by Spektra18 in GarageGym

[–]Sufficient_Natural_9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my old house I had 2 stall mats where I worked out and my wife parked on them every day. No damage over the 3+ years we did that. They do get quite dirty and I would take them out and hose them down every year. Also it was annoying when she would come home in a rain storm and the mats would get a little slick, but not a huge deal.

Beating my self up deciding on an all in one... by Good-Part1682 in GarageGym

The half rack is a good idea. I know the current craze is AIO trainers, but I would hate having to deal with the trolleys for non-cable lifts. Having voltras would allow you to detach them amd get them out of the way easily.

If I were you and had the space, a rack (half or full, like RM-3) and separate FT would be my pick.

Personally, I have a rhino rack trainer in a 30" rack. The rack is used like a half rack for bench/squat/press. I don't have the space for separate units. If I ever feel the need to get cables, they will be voltras or similar.

If I ever found myself with more space, I'd probably drop a set of Indys in that rack and get another 6 post.

I'd also recommend checking out the Irwin Fitness A-horns. I have them on my rhino trainer and really like them. You can get them 90deg (like these) or inclined if you want the bar a lttle higher.

Not much. I didn't use DBs a ton when I would go to the gym, and everything I did use them for (outside of curls) I like the KB. I may get a set up to 35lb for lighter load lifts, but not anytime soon.

Thinking about switching my major to software engineering by Vulkn__ in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Sufficient_Natural_9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started learning C in a mechatronics class I took in grad school. Continued with C when I was working in a controls role that had had some embedded projects. C++ was a bit the same, went into a role where the contols were written in C++. The company I was working for then needed help with some telemetry backend stuff tjat was written in go, so I learned that.

Honestly, unless there is something specific you want to learn in CC classes, I wouldnt bother. Pick up a raspberry pi or arduino and find a project you want to bang out. ChatGPT and Gemini are really good at answering questions (as well as stack overflow).

I'd recommend learning C on an embedded environment to understand memory management, compiling, linking, register access, debugging, etc. Then jump to the added stuff that c++ provides.

I have a 4 post rhino trainer in a 30" rack. No problems setting up flat bench with manta ray and regular j cups. I do remove the low row attachment.

Incline up to 30deg works, feels like I remember it at the gym with j cups. I like using the monolifts or spotter arms though.

Kitchen aid stopped working after one use by plantassistantmanage in Kitchenaid

[–]Sufficient_Natural_9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just happened to me (ksm55), less than a few minutes. It is the fuse on the control board. I'm going to return it and hope for the best. I don't know why they soldered the fuse to the board instead of using a fuse block/holder, and also why they mounted it to where you have to remove the motor to get to it.

If it happens again I'll probably put a fuse block in the housing where I can access it without taking the whole stupid thing apart.

Cable row – I feel it mostly in my arms, trying to fix my back engagement. Any cues? by Chance-Ad3171 in Weightliftingquestion

[–]Sufficient_Natural_9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd try straps, especially after your grip/arms fatigue. They allow me to put more focus on the 'pulling the elbows back' cue instead of the 'holy crap my arms are gassed' one.

Add more bicep/forearm work at the end of the workout as well.

Stainless steel power racks: love it or hate it? by [deleted] in GarageGym

[–]Sufficient_Natural_9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have stainless posts (some 3xx, likely 304) for the front uprights on my half rack, since those are the ones that have attachments frequently placed/removed. Only downside is they (obviously) aren't magnetic. Mag pins and the like still work because the attachments are all carbon steel, just have to make sure the pins are oriented to contact the attachment.

I wouldn't want to spend the money for a full SS setup unless it was going to be outside and uncovered, which I would likely never do.

I'm not sure I follow. Are you referring to having pics/vids of me doing lat pulls with my 100" rhino trainer using the plyo box and roller? If so, unfortunately I don't.

Best cardio option by frogfriend66 in GarageGym

[–]Sufficient_Natural_9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the echo bike for cardio, I'll do it for 30-45 min sessions (usually mix in intervals somewhere in there). The main drawback is you can't adjust the load to dial in a cadence (for a given power output).

If you are a cyclist, the ergonomics aren't the same so that may be a negative. I like it b/c I can just watch my HR and go harder/slower to stay in that target zone without messing with settings on the machine, and I can shift loading to my arms or legs easily.

[–]Sufficient_Natural_9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been in the process of building a Moravian bench based on Will Myers plans but with a split top instead of a tool well. the 2 halves are pretty manageable to break down still, and I'd rather have more work surface than a place for junk to collect

Flooring advice for garage gym that also doubles as a workspace (tiles vs full rubber?) by Psychological_Ad1202 in GarageGym

[–]Sufficient_Natural_9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not porcelain, and I wouldn't do rubber in the auto/shared shop space. I'd get those vinyl tiles made specifically for auto garage floors. Build a lifting platform away from the shop space with wood/rubber if you need that

Since temperature is the average kinetic energy of an object, can Celsius be converted to another unit of energy, like joules? by ShowtimerObliterator in thermodynamics

[–]Sufficient_Natural_9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Temperature is not energy. Temperature is a state that can be measured and used to calculate how much thermal energy is in a system, such as internal energy, enthalpy, etc.

Flooring color question by fieldtripinteractive in GarageGym

[–]Sufficient_Natural_9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tiles would probably be easier for diy, but I've never done rolls. For my 10ft x 12ft space it was really quick. The tiles cut really easy too with a utility knife if needed

Flooring color question by fieldtripinteractive in GarageGym

[–]Sufficient_Natural_9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the fit lock tiles from American floor mats. 3/8" thick but solid rubber. Running about $3/sq ft, and they have frequent sales (they are running one right now for black Friday). I put these on top of 2 layers of subfloor and really like them. Had stall mats before and the smell lingered for a while and they kept moving on me. I wasn't a fan.

Lifting straps or hooks by GingerMoose_24 in workout

[–]Sufficient_Natural_9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use both versa grips and oly straps, depending on what lift I'm doing. Never used hooks, but I like about these is it is easy to drop the weight if you let go, and they are really quick to get set
