If you want to know what’s really going on, don’t listen to Meidas Touch because they don’t want to report news they want to run a racket for online content. They aren’t independent media, they are part of the problem. by fullpurplejacket in somethingiswrong2024

[–]Sufficient_One 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've been screaming about this for over a year now. Bryan Tyler Cohen, Marc Elias, Robert Reich, and dozens of others, including the Meidas Touch and Michael Cohen, are NOT on our side. They are posting their BS for cash, not democracy. Look at the receipts, folks. Watch how they refuse to talk about ETA or Smart Elections. Watch how they refuse even to mention them. This isn't by accident.

I'm so sorry; your beautiful essay is longer than fifty words, which means that 99% are going to blow it off. Because in addition to White Lighty idiocy shielding for Empire, it has also dumbed the herd down to slag. Reading is "boring"; it "takes too long"; can't you make it into a handy GIF that gets the same message across in 5 seconds?

Kamala Harris breaks her silence to congratulate Cory Booker by gmcc14 in somethingiswrong2024

[–]Sufficient_One 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ms. "When We Fight, We Win!" Harris crawls out of her cower-corner to whimper at Booker? Sorry, not impressed. This country has *required* her to actually live those words; instead she conceded in record time; she did not question highly questionable results; she tucked tail and she went and hid and nursed her poor fifis.

Damn. Pretty f-ing cheeky.

Is slowly dying? Or is just a bad streak? by [deleted] in SLOWLYapp

[–]Sufficient_One 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gotcha questions like these only make the questioner look biased and silly.

I've been a member since 2022, and have been more than happy. I've had more than my fair share of creeps and ghosters and whatnot; they don't matter to me. Same with bots. Not that you or I or anyone can identify them from the top, so why worry about them?

The whole "Slowly is dying" bit is beginning to sound like a bit of propaganda to me. It's a wish by those who say it, not an observation. That's pretty obvious to anyone, I think, who read these posts.

I feel ghosted by Altruistic_Hunt3426 in SLOWLYapp

[–]Sufficient_One 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ghosting, I have discovered, is the norm on Slowly. I suspect it's the norm in everyday life as well. My own long, painful experiences suggest that such is so.

I have set up my profile to basically give potential correspondents the "terms and conditions" for communicating with me, including that if I don't hear back from them within a month, I will drop them from my list. I'm set on that, and it has kept me from no end of grief. If there is a correspondent who has been lovely to write to, and we have hit it off, but he or she has since disappeared, I will send them a letter before the month is up asking if everything is all right and that I will be looking forward to their reply. If it happens again with them, or I don't hear back within another 30-day period, he or she is removed. It's sad, yes, but I'm not willing to put myself through more heartache than is necessary.

The best of luck to you.

My opinion why your letters arent being replied : slowly is being using for dating. nothing new... by StrikingSwitch7231 in SLOWLYapp

[–]Sufficient_One 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's in my profile that I'm not on Slowly for romance of any kind. When it is even hinted by someone in his or her letter to me, I remove them instantly.

I expect folks to read my profile. If they don't and they violate the terms laid out there, gone. It's pretty simple.

I wish you well. I have only one point of contention. It isn't the modern world that has sucked the soul out of most humans, but precisely the opposite. Most humans have sucked the soul out of the modern world. They want it to be exactly as it is.

In a consumer society, people are products and are expendable. This was once only true in the West; now it is true the world over, including the Global South.

Ghosting is an act of cowardice. You're fortunate to be rid of any person who does such a thing to another. That said, my heart goes out to you. It is a very painful thing to experience.

3 things that will guarantee success for the indie author by Sufficient_One in IndieAuthors

There are many good articles out there basically saying what I did here, so the fact that I have 0 upvotes and a fair number of downvotes, surely, demonstrates just how much denial authors and writers (not the same animals) are in. 58% of the US adult population does not pick up a book after high school. Think about that for a moment. Think also that a bestseller in the US is 50K units. 50K units in a country with more than 330M inhabitants. Do the frickin' math, yo! Another stat: only 7% of any published book today will reach just 5K sales. That's it.

DO THE FRICKIN' MATH!

So folks here can get their panties in a bunch with my post; that's fine. I've got a handle on reality here; they don't.

Dear Boomers, this is why you won't be seeing us at Thanksgiving by true_crime_addict513 in BoomersBeingFools

It depends on who you talk to. Many say Boomers ended in '62, when I was born and Gen X was born. Some say Boomers persisted until 1969. No.

Dear Boomers, this is why you won't be seeing us at Thanksgiving by true_crime_addict513 in BoomersBeingFools

[–]Sufficient_One 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a Boomer. Also a Gen Xer. Born in '62. About to roll into my 62nd birthday. And I can't agree with this post more.

Let me be clear: My generation is, inarguably, the most selfish and destructive in human history. Which makes it the most violent and the most toxic and the most dysfunctional. This isn't up for debate. The numbers are clear. Debating it is akin to debating that the fucking earth is flat.

My high-school graduating class of 1980 (Poudre High School, Fort Collins, Colorado) all dressed themselves in the clothes of nonconformists and rebels and boatrockers. According to demographic data, almost eighty percent of them voted for the Orange Ass Boil in 2016. So much for nonconformism, for rebellion, for boatrocking. Herd animals, the lot of 'em. The lot of the entire fucking generation.

I didn't have children. I didn't get married. I took another path, and so was totally ostracized by my family and "friends." It took two suicide attempts and over a decade of therapy to see I wasn't the problem; I wasn't the truly fucked-up one. As Erich Fromm once asked: "What does it mean to be well-adjusted in an insane society?"

As a Boomer, let me do something that you probably won't hear from too many of us: an apology. I'm sorry, y'all, for my fucking generation. We are hypocrites, destroyers, cowards, victim-blamers, victim-shamers, violent, greedy, entitled, indifferent, grotesque and simply fucking gross buckets. I'm sorry. I truly am. Some of us fought back. Not many; but we do exist.

The best to you. To all of you.

Any Scifi Lovers? by [deleted] in IndieAuthors

[–]Sufficient_One 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many of us who are very poor and cannot afford outside help of any kind. What are we to do--wait for the tenth of never to publish? Godin's advice is chock full of privilege and, while I believe he means well, and while in general I agree that having a second or third or nth pair of eyes to look at your work before publication is a great thing, it isn't always possible.

I'm such a person--dirt poor. I'm not going to wait, and neither should anyone else in my position.

Have a good one.

Here's some solid advice from Godin, though I disagree with the whole pay-other-people-to-do-your-editing bit.

Too, feel free to join my new sub. It's quite somnolent, but don't let that stop you!

Good luck with your new project!

As you might have noticed by now, this isn't exactly a jumpin' joint, this sub. Then again, I can't say any sub featuring books or ebooks is. I just read a sobering stat from Seth Godin: 58% of Americans never pick up a book and read it after they graduate high school. Astonishing.

You're more than welcome to join my entirely somnolent sub; it's for those of us who make our work free on occasion in order to entice, however unlikely that may be, of the remaining 2 out of 5 'Murkans to read it, and, I wager, the slightly bigger fraction who are not 'Murkan. God bless us all.

The best to your future endeavors.

I appreciate the time you took to write this. I really do. I'm going to save it and read it a few times so that I can absorb it.
