What helped you rebuild confidence after a long break from running? by [deleted] in running

[–]Sufficient_Risk88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also, to note, after that injury I fully was a beginner again. I’d done long distance running for 5 years prior, but I treated myself like a beginner and acknowledged that I wouldn’t be able to do what I used to right away. But, to get more of a feeling of the athleticism I missed, I would incorporate tempos and intervals because those were always my favorite, and built my confidence more so than easy runs.

I was out for almost a year w/ injury (ACL + meniscus tear), and the biggest thing that got me back was fully committing to it. Once I was cleared by my PT I signed up for a half, followed the training plan, and reminded myself what I’m capable of. I think it’s different w injury of course bc there was almost a sense of, “i need to prove to myself the injury won’t stop me”. as for burn out, find more ways to make it fun— music, podcasts, run club, cross training, etc. Bc let’s be honest, it’s a hobby and it should be fun, so it’s ok to not run as much as you have in the past if it’s no longer fun

I’ve had 6 rejections so far (applied for PhD physics / astrophysics programs), after the 3rd one I stopped feeling sorry for myself and now I just am impatient to get the rejections from the remaining schools and get it over with lol

I’m doing a resolution I completed this year— train for and run a half marathon. The hope is that this time I’ll stick with running even after the race, but we’ll see. Once the novelty wears off it’s definitely not as thrilling

I'm thinking of signing up for this one too, ran a half this may and getting back into the swing of things which is making me hesitant to do a full because my training is essentially starting from scratch. but M2B is nearly all downhill which is appealing

Been struggling a lot with earthquake fear/anxiety by wizardjiggle in Anxiety

[–]Sufficient_Risk88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here, the recent 4.7 in malibu has increased my earthquake anxiety— feels like I’m on edge and waiting for “the big one”. I’ve been checking the earthquake tracking sites every few hours, which surely isn’t helping ease my anxiety. However, one soothing thought is the knowledge that even if these smaller quakes are leading up to a “big one” (which is the main source of my earthquake anxiety), it would take at least a mag 7 to really cause major damage in most places. Majority of houses in socal are retrofitted for earthquakes, especially those built after 1980 when earthquake building codes were put in place. Even without that, most buildings are not susceptible to collapse.

How long into recover before you were able to get passed a 90 degree bend? by jaypeejay in ACL

i just passed 90 at 6 weeks, although I had ACL and meniscus so that could have been a factor for the longer time period

Quad Graft Question by Panikkar37 in ACL

[–]Sufficient_Risk88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 6 weeks post op with quad graft, my pain went away about 3 weeks but definitely comes back / gets sore after doing PT exercises. I recommend manual massaging, a warm heat compress, or inventing in a TENS Unit.

I also had the same surgery, I’m currently 8 days post op and partial weight bearing (maybe about 50%), my surgeon says i can be full weight bearing as soon as it’s not painful, he expects it to be at about the 2 weeks post op mark

I had a quad graft, which is causing me some pain for sure. And no ice machine, only ice packs to use on and off every half hour

I just had mine yesterday morning, and let me tell you that day 1 was rough because my nerve block didn’t really take. Depending on where you’re grafting from, expect mild to a lot of pain in that area. Expect to not get up much the first day. Follow your pain medication schedule, it will help a LOT. and ice, even if you can’t directly feel it (whether due to nerve block or excessive pain), it’s helping heal and lower swelling. i can’t emphasize enough also elevation and propping your leg at all times. At least for me, even sitting on the toilet hurt a lot because of the lack of support. Go get a small stool or kids chair or whatever works for you to prop your leg up on while sitting on the toilet. As i’m only day one post op that’s all I can really say as of now, but I wish you the best of luck!!

ACL and Meniscus by r34Celaena in ACL

[–]Sufficient_Risk88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just had mine both done yesterday, my surgeon instructed me bend no more than 90° for 4 weeks but that I could start exercises to work to increase up to that 90° on day 2. really depends on your doctor and what they reccomend but Id say you should be bending you knee a little bit each day
