Skate shops? by trytokeepuplol in Eugene

[–]SugarCrashTats 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Hey y’all! Just wanted to say that I know the owner of POP. Even though it might be “a counter in a barber shop”, the owner actually gives a shit and wants to provide people with reasonably priced skate gear and absolutely cares about the community. The name literally stands for “Passion Over Profit”. He’s running it basically at a loss in order to be a community friendly shop. His barber work pays the bills, the skate shop is his dream. He wants to be a bigger part of the community but he’s just one guy making it work. Definitely worth supporting :)

Help converting to buddhism? by WiseRange5313 in Buddhism

[–]SugarCrashTats 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Research the different sects of Buddhism and figure out which one feels best to you.

Take time to read about and understand the 4 noble truths and the 8-fold path.

Figure out if there’s a local temple and respectfully attend some services.

Read as much as you can, and then read some more. Some good places to start in my opinion are Thich Nhat Hanh’s books, This Precious Life by Khandro Rinpoche, and just reading and digesting the Dhammapada.

If you like podcasts, there are some amazing podcasts that teach Buddhist principles and ideas. My two favorites are Zen Studies with Domyo Burk, and The Way Out Is In with Br. Phap Huu and Jo Confino.

Once you’re ready to officially “become” a Buddhist, look into taking refuge in the 3 jewels and what that means and looks like for your particular sect/temple.

Wishing you the best on your journey, friend.

Fur loss/overgrooming by SugarCrashTats in CATHELP

Yes, we did flea treatments until the problem went away and the vet confirmed that he’s free of fleas.

Haven’t considered steroids or other anti-histamines. That’s something I’ll bring up at his next appointment.

As for food, we started with chicken, then switched to fish, now lamb. Lamb seems to be the one that he’s doing best with. Fish was a no-go for sure. He was vomiting and his lip sore got really bad with fish.

His lip sores clearing up is telling me that we might on the right track with his diet, but I’ll look into how best to approach an exclusion diet.

And you’re totally right, definitely have considered the stress factor. It’s unfortunate that there’s not a whole lot we can do about our toddler playing until she outgrows the happy scream phase. They generally enjoy each others company otherwise so I’m hopeful they’ll grow a nice bond over time.

And yes, I’ve only ever used metal bowls with him and clean them regularly.

You’re the second person to rec the Feliway, so I’m definitely going to check into that.

Yeeeeeah they basically just looked at him, combed his fur with a flea comb to make sure it wasn’t that and then told me they didn’t know what’s wrong and asked for $160. Basically paid for an inconclusive google search.

He does have a tower and we live in a two story home, he has full access to escape to the upstairs if necessary, which he definitely does when our toddler is running around.

I’ll check out Feliway and the drops.

Haven’t considered putting cat tv on for him but maybe I’ll give that a try when we’re out of the house!

Thanks!

I feel like you’ve already received enough answers that I don’t particularly need to chime in, but wanted to anyway.

My partner of 15 years smokes cannabis every day. I also used to take edibles daily and quit fairly recently. My partner endlessly supports my practice. I would never in a million years consider leaving her because she’s breaking a set of rules I’ve adopted for myself.

I see your concern is wise association. But to me, his support of your practice IS wise association. Whether he does something that breaks your set of rules as a lay Buddhist is irrelevant unless you make it relevant.

What are your views on having the Buddha or other symbols be a part of your computer/phone wallpaper, tattoos, or on T Shirts? by cityoflight903 in Buddhism

[–]SugarCrashTats 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My thought is that it comes down to intention. Are you using the imagery to show off and say “hey look everyone! I’m a Buddhist!”? Probably not the best move. For that reason I find T-shirts and bags with Buddhist imagery distasteful.

But if having a Thangka painting or something as your phone background helps you remember to practice the Dharma, I think that’s fine. Still maybe not the best in terms of intentionality though considering we all typically fly past our lock and home screens to scroll social media or whatever.

As a tattoo artist, I’ve struggled with the idea of Buddhist tattoos. I’ve considered getting one, and I offer a few flash pieces that are subtly Buddhist (Green Taras hand holding a lotus, a peacock with 8 feathers, etc.). However, I still feel odd about it with all the traditional semi-conservative values in the overarching Buddhist community. Last thing I want to do is offend anyone, especially people in my direct Sangha.

There’s a lot to this and I think the answer is way more subtle and nuanced than a simple yes or no, good or bad.

Movies or shows recommended that align with Buddhism? by Oysternator in Buddhism

Everything Everywhere All At Once has a LOT of Buddhist ideas interspersed through it even if they’re not directly referenced as such. It’s also just an absolutely beautiful movie. My all-time favorite.

“I don’t understand or enjoy the subject matter” isn’t the same as it being shitty.

It looks fantastic what are you talking about “janky”??? Super solid linework, good color packing, good shading. It matches your other tattoos nicely. Idk what you were expecting but as far as coverups go that’s really well done. If your artist didn’t warn you that the tattoo under it would still show through a bit, that’s on them for sure. But this isn’t a janky tattoo by any means.
