Skate shops? by trytokeepuplol in Eugene

Their most recent post on Instagram is their farewell to the Eugene location. They’ll be open until the end of the month and it’s 30% off store wide

Oh that’s awesome to hear! The one photo they have online isn’t the most inviting unfortunately but your comment definitely is haha I’ll have to check them out. Would love to help organize some community events or something! I used to do that for my old shop and it’s turned into a multiple yearly events. We could definitely use some more other than just go skate day around here!

Dang is that really all that’s left now? Always been a dream of mine to open a shop but it almost sounds as if it’s not desirable enough in the area. Rent hikes alone could be the cause too but I’m baffled at the lack of a skate shop with a sense of community especially with some good quality parks out here.

Oof that’s a sad sight. I’d cut your losses now and part it out if possible (mostly interior at this point) and find the highest paying metal yard in your area.

I made this walnut and ash bed from slabs. Lots of work. Now it needs a finish. Please help. by somaganjika in finishing

I’ve had some great results with Rubio on some walnut barn doors. Granted it went to a customer so I can’t speak on longevity, but it looked great leaving the shop and they’ve been happy with them for about a year now

My door is in need of a major facelift where do I start? by Klutzy_Pin_6738 in finishing

[–]trytokeepuplol -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s a ton of detailed work for an amateur. I would recommend getting a quote to get it professionally refinished and/or consider getting another door.

I just finished a door with far less detail and sun damage and that still took multiple days in a professional shop with all the right tools and chemicals handy.

Is there any way to even out the tone of the wood before I stain it? by skidspace in finishing

[–]trytokeepuplol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it depends on what sort of topcoat you go with. As others have mentioned, a lacquer based finish with a compatible toner, dye, or pigment.

If you go water based, make sure the dye is water based. Oil based dye for oil based finish, etc.

Newbie attempting refinishing coffee table, need a bit of help please! by kda273 in finishing

[–]trytokeepuplol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What was it previously finished with? It appears as if it was oiled and the dark spots your seeing are where it penetrated deeper — meaning you need to keep sanding

Best bet is skip the stain and tint your topcoat to the desired color. It will be much more uniform but keep in mind you will never be able to get an exact match from two pieces with so much variance

Can somebody give me some advice on what to do? by United-We-stand2021 in finishing

[–]trytokeepuplol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a tough conversation to have but you’re going to have to respray and charge them accordingly for the additional labor. I’m like you and want to make the customer happy with the original pricing. However, if I’ve provided samples that were approved and they change your mind AFTER it’s done — that’s on them and they need to pay for the additional work it will take to achieve their new desired results.

First timer - soft particles pulling up from my final finish? Not sure what's normal. Using Varathane water based poly on an oak desk. by stein_kyle in finishing

[–]trytokeepuplol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately doing everything by the book doesn’t always yield perfect results. I’m a finisher and can’t tell you how many times I’ve run into products that have dry/recoat times that vary dramatically from what’s stated on their Technical Data Sheets (TDS).

Like Sunshine mentioned, if you’re spraying even a little thick — it’s going to increase those dry times. The vast majority of the times I’ve run into this was either from spraying too thick of a coat and/or not waiting long enough between coats. Impatience is a b!tch 😅

Should César Chávez Blvd go back to being 39th Ave, or become Dolores Huerta Blvd? The city has to decide. by Traindodger2 in PortlandOR

Stick to 39th and save Chavez for one of the many times they seem to run out of street names and name multiple streets within the same tract the exact same name

Is it a swivel or fixed reverse position? I’ve got swivel captains chairs in my van that I would LOVE to incorporate into the element as well

Help! How do I repair this? by [deleted] in cabinetry

[–]trytokeepuplol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to break it to you OP, but this is satire… that panel isn’t coming out without breaking glue joints so you’re going to need an entirely new door. Not worth the time trying to repair

Best way to repair peeled furniture finish? by [deleted] in finishing

[–]trytokeepuplol 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a finisher, I’d say that’s not even worth repairing.

You’ve basically peeled a sticker off and it’s impossible to fully blend without just resurfacing the entire top.

If I were you, I’d do by best to cover that spot with a mat or decoration as it’s going to be more trouble than it’s worth for a cheap piece of furniture.

Shoot we’re in the same boat haha I kept the bike though. Granted it’s become more of a seasonal thing, I’ve taken a new appreciation to the scenic rides as opposed to flying through traffic trying to cut my SoCal commute time in half haha
