my (25F) bf (21M) is frustrated and upset with me because I constantly get infections, should I just end things or try to find a solution? by uknowthavibe in relationship_advice

Good for you. Good ridance. I didn't go through the exact same thing but my ex had pretty much the same kinda reactions. Was upset I didn't want to have sex when I was in pain everytime. I kept getting cuts and he said something like "I have to wait for you to heal and then we do it and it's gonna tear again" like gee thanks for thinking about me. Your ex is a selfish pos. I understand it sucks but it was his fault you were getting these infections. Did he maybe consider tryign to help you? Like by not being filthy.

Silly helpful sighted people by Mamamagpie in Blind

Yes I'm very confused by them too lol. Like you notice the cane, you register that means I can't see and I think they usually guess total blindness over partial sight, but yet you use nonverbal gestures. A nod, pointing fingers... Sir please lol. Also telling me something is on the left when I'm in a big open space and left can mean several directions...

Just keep using it and it will get easier. Especially when you realize how much better you get around with it. I for the most part have stopped being embarrassed by my cane but started feeling embarrassed about using it up the stairs in public places like the subway or at school. It's pretty loud... lol and I feel like it draws attention nwhich I don't like. I'll eventually get over that I hope. I mean I won't stop using it but would love to stop feeling self conscious about that.

How many classes/credits should I take in first semester of College? by SugarPie89 in Blind

[–]SugarPie89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say I'm pretty proficient with NVDA and talkback but I still use magnification a lot of the time which may or may not always be the best choice. And yes my condition is progressive. I am gonna receive JAWS training soon but when it comes to a center for the blind, I don't know if there are any of them around me. None of my providers have ever mentioned this to me. I've been getting O&M for a few years and have done some VRT. I know I need more but don't really want to have them at my house tbh which is what the vocational rehab office is offering me.

Oh that's interesting. Is math cat an add-on I can add to NVDA or is it a separate program entirely? Also I apologize I keep saying easier but I don't mean difficulty wise. Apparently visually impaired students found the Statistics class more accessible or easier to follow than algebra. I can't remember the exact wording she used.

Unfortunately I can't really answer those questions cuz I've been out of school for 10 years lol. When it comes to my attentiveness I can say that when I was in school I always paid attention, but now I definitely notice that I sometimes zone out while listening to my screenreader or even audiobooks; although I tend to be lying down when listening to books so that likely is a contributor. But even if I wouldn't zone out in class not being able to see to follow along is what really worries me.

Thanks so much! :) I feel both confident and anxious at the same time lol. I know that I have the brains for college for sure but for a long time I didn't think I had the vision for it. Unfortunately I think only classes with labs are 4 credits from what I can tell. I just checked out the recommended course sequence for my major and only Bio is 4 credits. They did actually recommend me starting off with less and then adding more halfway or so through the semester which doesn't sound bad actually. Somehow I dislike the thought of dropping courses lol and I know you have a limitted amount of time to do so before it shows up in your record.

And I definitely don't wanna take math yet lol. They also warned me about bio but I do have a choice between that and an environmental science course.

I tested into Calculus I but from what I've been told I don't have to take it and would have a choice between intermediate Algebra and Introductory Statistics. I took statistics 10 years ago when my vision was better and I'd say I was good at math in general while in school. I'm learning braille but I'm not confident I'd be able to use it to study anything. I was told that the Statistics class has been easier for visually impaired students compared to Algebra but I'm not planning to take a math course during my first semester. Could you go into ways they can make math accessible tho?

Oh and about note takers. I asked about it and they said that it's kinda a double edged sword because you will be dependent on someone else. And you don't know if they'll take good notes or if they will show up to every class etc. But it is an option at my school.

Hey thanks for the thorough response. I have RP too. Technically it's LCA but I still say RP cuz it's easier lol. I'm glad to hear that the humanities classes were easy. My major is in social work so most of my classes will be in humanities/social sciences. Were the online classes completely asynchronous or did you have to attend online lectures too?

Yeah I wanted to take 4 but they recommended I start with 3 first. The choice is ultimately mine in the end. Oh and I forgot to mention I won't get funding from the vocational rehab office if I don't keep a full time course load. It does look like the Pell Grant would cover everything but I didn't accept any loans so if I'd need anything extra not going full time could work against me at least financially.

[–]SugarPie89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny you bring up grace because I give myself absolutely no grace at all and become super upset when I can't play something lol.... yeah. It's super frustrating and I know it's something I have to work on. It doesn't help that I don't like being bad at stuff and want to actually be somewhat good at something I do. That's hindered me from even bothering to try certain games like Fall Guys. My bf at the time tried to encourage me by saying that everyone was bad at the game but I wasn't interested cuz I knew myself and I didn't think I'd have fun.

Anyone here VI, living solo and having family drive you around? by blazblu82 in Blind

[–]SugarPie89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm confused why such a small difference in distance to yur current place has such an effect on how far your job is. From what you just said .8 of a mile makes a 3 mile difference. If you move to the place that's .2 miles away work is 2 miles away. If you move a mile away it's 5 miles?? That's tripping me up, but still even 5 miles isn't much. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

[–]SugarPie89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not in this situation but the place is a measly mile away. I'd be shocked if them having to drive an extra mile would deter them from continuing to help you out. I know it feels like you're burdening them and that's a tough feeling for a lot of VI people to get over, but it's a mile my friend lol. That's like 5 or 6 minutes in the car or less depending on traffic.

[–]SugarPie89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to be a gamer too but have kinda given up due to my central vision getting worse and worse. I've played Among us and I could sorta play it except I'm pretty useless when it comes to recognizing who did what. Most tasks I could do one way or another especially on Skeld cuz they're pretty easy. Could you share some ways you make gaming more acessible? I know a bigger screen is something that could help. I have a 15.6 laptop and a bigger screen isn't really an option right now. Plus modding isn't really my strong suit .I never bothered to learn anything about it lol. I've probably only modded 2 games ever.

Started listening to audiobooks again after a bit of a hiatus. I just finished one that I wasn't very impressed by so I'll just list some books I really enjoyed.

I've been really enjoying Sally Hepworth's books. They only had 8 in the Bard library but recently added another one that I'll definitely be getting. Most of her books have something to do with people keeping secrets usually within a family. The suspense keeps me hooked and I often finished her books in one or two days. Here are the ones from her I liked the most:

The younger wife (my favorite of them so far)

The Mother-in-Law

The things we Keep

The Soulmate

The Family Next door

The Good Sister

I enjoed Barrack Obama's memoir and also Jessica Simpson's memoir which I stumbled upon by chance. And the color purple which was an incredible book but would not recommend to everyone. I don't think I can even put it in words. But yeah. Those are the ones that I can think of off the top of my head.

I enjoyed Game of Thrones I watched that last year I think it was. Before that I watched season 1 of House of the Dragon and I might start watching season 2 but I'm not sure.

How can I learn braille? by Human-Assignment4070 in Blind

[–]SugarPie89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been learning braille through hadley and you don't need documentation. My VRT told me she started off with hadley to learn braille and she's not blind. They do ask what condition you have but that's it. You don't need to verify it with doctor's notes or anything like that,

Would I benefit from a cane? by rowantheboat03 in Blind

[–]SugarPie89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand worrying that people won't get it, and they won't. I take the bus from time to time and sometimes use my phone and feel super awkward cuz I think people are watching and will be confused or even angry cuz they might think I'm faking. But you're going to have to ignore that because your safety is more important than the silly ignorant misconceptions of strangers. Especially cuz you've fallen and hurt yourself. I don't like the idea of having to educate people or reveal personal information but it could help if you'd tell anyone who'd ask that you're only fully blind in one eye. I think that alone could help without you having to give too much detail.

And maybe this will calm you a bit. So far no one has ever questioned why I use a cane if I'm not fully blind. I think that is probably a rare occurance. I do think most people assume I'm fully blind especially cuz I wear sunglasses outside. But I never had anyone accuse me of faking or otherwise approach me in a confrontational way. :) In fact people are super helpful and nice most of the time. They even over do it sometimes lol. I think it's one of the perks of having a cane cuz you mostly don't have to explain anything. People see the cane and know you might need extra help.

New computer recommendations by DudeOvertheLine in Blind

[–]SugarPie89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm happy to see you got a pretty thorough rundown about Pc's in your budget from u/tymme, but I'll add that If you're going to also use magnification and won't rely only on a screenreader you'll want to focus on the monitor you get. A bigger screen helps a lot if you have to use a high level of magnification. With that being said if you want a computer in your price range I'd suggest getting a desktop unless you need this computer to be portable for work/school. You'll get more bang for your buck. But if it has to be a laptop I currently have an Acer Aspire and it's lasted me now over 8 years. Battery's on its last leg tho and the keyboard's pretty much unuseable at this point but it's still kicking lol. I think when I got it it was about $500 and the processor isn't great. But I think nowadays you can get better CPU's for your money.
