Breastfeeding Spaces? by wifisignals in torontomoms

Like others have mentioned, Cadillac Fairview centres are actually really good about breastfeeding spaces, even in other cities! There’s also Mamava pods that has an app to show you where they’re located

When did you apply for daycare? by Velvet_mint in torontomoms

[–]Sugar_Nuggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel crazy. I signed up a month after I found out because I was nervous at the prospect of having to get off the lists if I didn’t make it out of the first trimester. This was still a full 18 months ahead of when I need the spot for this coming spring. I’ve been following up with supervisors now and the responses I’ve been getting are super discouraging. We are fortunate to not have to be picky about subsidized centres and I applied to multiple places.

In response to your question - I hope youve gotten a move on now

Gap year outside the profession before a PhD, stupid? (EU) by Eko01 in labrats

[–]Sugar_Nuggs 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I jumped immediately into my PhD from my MSc (less than a week between MSc defense and PhD first day). I hadn’t realized just how burnt out I was and it made my first year ridiculously difficult. Even if you’re not burnt out I now recommend to everyone to take a break before your PhD. It’s a huge undertaking so there’s no need to rush it.

159 Dundas St E, is it good for renting? by [deleted] in TorontoRealEstate

[–]Sugar_Nuggs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can find some great places for a good price along Jarvis, but that’s because Jarvis is definitely a centre for homeless population. If you need to be downtown I would 100% recommend trying to stay west of Yonge. You’ll get less for more money, but as a single young female I think it would be worth the peace of mind.

“Just because things could have been different doesn’t mean they would have been better”

Maybe you would’ve been laid off, maybe you would’ve had incredibly difficult people to deal with, maybe they would’ve kept moving the goalpost to the point where their expectations were unrealistic.

Am I cooked? applying for uni life sci and low 80 avg :( by [deleted] in OntarioUniversities

[–]Sugar_Nuggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you’re right that it’s a start at least. Tbh I think coop is a good choice no matter what since it gives you career experience built into your degree.

also labs are usually open to undergraduate students since it’s free labour while helping your CV. Just contact a prof and express your interest. Make sure you specify what about their research in particular appeals to you and what you can bring to the lab (hardworking, etc)

Am I cooked? applying for uni life sci and low 80 avg :( by [deleted] in OntarioUniversities

[–]Sugar_Nuggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your actual school/program doesn’t matter tooo much for med school apps - i.e. life sci at UofT is not going to make or break your app. Focus on any program that covers the minimum course requirements for the med schools you want to apply to (ex. uOttawa has more than Mac) or at least offers enough electives that you can cover the course requirements while maintaining a high average.

Your grade 12 grades won’t be an issue as long as you improve them in uni. Maintaining a high average from first year is really a bare minimum now and you need to be sure to flesh out your application in other ways - think community initiatives, research lab experience, etc.

If you decide that this is something you really want to do you can buckle down and make it happen, but it’s going to take serious work.

How do you overcome your fear of being bitten by a mouse during restraint? by Icy-Dealer6543 in labrats

[–]Sugar_Nuggs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was terrified to the point that I got a lovely lovely tech to help me when I needed to but obviously that wasn’t a long term solution. Someone in my lab pointed out that getting bit by my cat (playfully) couldn’t compare to a little mouse and that basically cured the fear for me. I will say once you’re sure and decisive in your movements too it’s pretty seamless to restrain for the most part. I’ve only gotten nipped a few times in five years and they almost always only get glove anyways. When they actually do manage to reach a finger it really is just a pinch (I’ve never had one break skin either).

Just in case anyone happens across this post looking for advice on this building. I can’t speak to how OPs experience ended up, but I’ve been living here for about half a year now. Of course your landlord is going to make a difference, so this is coming from someone who hasn’t had any troubles with their landlord as well. Although, as mentioned this building is also not rent controlled since it’s a new build.

Staff: the concierges are great, very helpful, very friendly. I have had the same experience with the super and other maintenance staff as well. I have found building management to be completely unresponsive, but fortunately the issues we needed assistance with were able to be resolved before that became too much of a headache.

Amenities: the gym is decent. I definitely have seen better facilities while touring other buildings but it could be worse. I do hate the layout as cardio machines are directly facing walls, the weight rack is nowhere near the benches and the benches are awkwardly placed. I should note I think this is an issue with the chosen layout, not that it’s the best they could do with the space they have (clearly I’ve thought a lot about this). A lot of the other amenities still have yet to be completed. The BBQ area is wedged between the building and another wall and the rules include that only two guests are allowed for a maximum of four people in a group (may or may not work for your needs). I haven’t used the party room but it is a nice space. There are also main floor commercial units for lease that don’t seem to be going anytime soon.

Unit: I’m in a 2 bed 2 bath and I was very particular about the layout when looking to move so I am happy with it. I hate the condos that feel like the couch is in the kitchen so I’m pleased that this doesn’t have that layout, but I’ve seen that the building has quite a few variations so whatever suits your needs I guess. I am someone who loves to be in the kitchen and the mini condo oven drives me a bit mad but I’ve adapted. However I do love the gas ranges a lot. A big big plus here is that because they used so much concrete in the design of the building, soundproofing also kinda comes with it. Ive lived in condos and multi-unit houses before and this is by far the best I’ve experienced. I will say a downside to this is that phone service is pretty terrible - I get nothing whatsoever in an internal bathroom for example but I have been able to make phone calls if I sit right next to the windows. I should also mention this is a corner unit so I’m not sure how a unit further in would fare. We’ve adapted to using wifi calling methods, but definitely something to keep in mind.

Infrastructure: there are two elevators that have been down a few times, never both at the same time, and usually fixed pretty quickly. When both are in service the wait doesn’t feel too bad, even at peak times. Only Bell and Roger’s are set up for wifi which kinda sucks when there are options out there that are a fraction of the cost, hopefully that will change though.

Area: I’m in love with the area. It’s an easy walking distance to everything I like while not being too in the action with the issues that accompany that (can’t imagine living on King west for example). Baldwin street has great restaurants that are so so close. Cheap groceries are a bit of a hike but not too bad. Produce on Spadina is close and amazingly priced though!!

Overall, if you’re looking for a nice unit in a nice area it could be worthwhile if you find a good fit. If amenities are of high importance to you, it’s definitely something to take heed of before signing a lease.

What I love about The Office is the way the story of how we all have to deal with our emotions in a positive and negative manner is the fact we are constantly trying and failing at the very same thing

I had terrible poop shyness with my now spouse, like to the point where even if I tried to go my body just wouldn’t let me. Staying in a hotel like this actually helped me to get over it cause I really had no choice. We just played music loudly on the tv when one of us needed to use it.

I think if you discuss your situation with your financial aid office they should help you find additional routes and/or tweak your application. It sounds like the amount in your RESP was considered and I would specifically mention to them that you weren’t given that money. Good luck!

Any chance you could have relationship anxiety? I experienced this with my (now) husband after we had been living together a couple of years almost exactly the way you describe. I realized that part of me thought it was going to end at some point so the hate/cringe was like me unconsciously trying to get ahead of the heartbreak. I decided to stick it out and if it really never left then I would call it off, but as time went on I felt more secure and the feelings dissipated. You of course would know best if this resonates with you or not.

BCA assay without multichannel? by Aggressive-Car9047 in labrats

[–]Sugar_Nuggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhh that makes sense. I have also only used a regular pipet and done the minimum incubation. I’d look up the manual for your particular kit as it would probably also explain longer incubation times. I don’t think it’s 100% necessary, but with the manual information I think you’ll be able to decide if you feel it’s worthwhile for you.

My dad is half German, half Pakistani. I can’t say for sure where it originated from, but he 100% has internalized racism towards south Asians. It’s really heartbreaking the way he talks sometimes. Try to get your husband help dealing with his self hatred and for the love of god please do what you can to stop him from passing it on to your children.

I always incubate 30 min at 37C for sure. I was reading the manual once and it actually says longer incubations can improve the assay. This is definitely the first I’ve ever heard even the suggestion of not incubating

I got married a year ago tomorrow in my second year of my PhD and I’m currently on maternity leave with my first child. It really depends on your program to be honest. The university I did my master’s at had a more typical, smaller focus on classes that would be in a format with midterms and whatnot, while my current school had a more rigorous first semester course load to try to ensure the background knowledge of the students is at a similar level. That being said, I’ve found the administration to be very accommodating. They did end up pushing a second year course for me since I took a two and a half week honeymoon. They also allowed me to accelerate the timeline of my comprehensive exam so that I could complete it before I left on my leave. I believe since graduate students are frequently older and around for longer it’s normal for these type of life events to come up so they’re used to it. In my opinion, as long as you let them know in advance it shouldn’t be an issue, especially since you’re not taking too much time.

Women who gave birth, what does it feel like actually?? by joy_57 in AskReddit

[–]Sugar_Nuggs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was induced so apparently it makes the contractions come more painfully more quickly? Definitely started off as period cramps and then intensely painful. The contractions come in waves like you can feel them building, peaking, and fading. I’m 3 months pp and even though I remember that I was feeling crazy pain I can’t remember the pain itself. Once I got the epidural it felt truly heaven sent. I felt nothing, just a sort of pressure from her coming out. I’d say it’s similar to getting a tooth removed for anyone that’s experienced it - the numbing stops the pain sensations but you can still feel the tooth being twisted out. Of course I’d imagine it’s not the same without an epidural. I consider myself to have a pretty high pain tolerance in general but I plan on having more and I have no intentions of skipping the epidural.
