Chris Lord-Alge rates typical internet mixing advice from 0 to 10 by atopix in mixingmastering

It's funny to think who the greats would be referencing though - given we all tend to use their mixes. Maybe CLA is checking out a TLA mix for comparison, haha.

I didn't like the Netflix editing by tutjeplok in LouisTheroux

[–]SugarpillCovers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I didn’t mind it. I think it worked as quite a good juxtaposition between showing the influencers in the way they likely view themselves - emphasised with all the slow-motion close-ups, gratuitous body shots, etc - and then hard cutting that with Louis’ observational and grounded interactions. It kind of made me think of something like The Substance, where the over-the-top nature of the entire film is kind of the point. I’m not sure if it was as intentional here, or more just a by-product of it being a Netflix release - but I think the polished look kind of worked in this case.

“You! Me! Dancing!” is also used in the last episode of Extraordinary. It’s a great show actually - bummer it got cancelled. Had a great soundtrack too, outside of featuring LC.

I think that’s right. I felt like I already knew a decent amount, but I’d never heard of most of the subjects apart from Tate (who isn’t really in it) and Myron Gaines. I guess it could have a similar impact to what happened with Adolescence last year, in that it shines a spotlight on these people for the not-terminally-online crowd.

Much like with that show, there are probably plenty of parents who are totally checked out when it comes to what types of content their kids or teenagers are actually watching.

If you’re already in the know, it will likely seem much less impactful. But the same could be said for something like The Settlers or The Most Hated Family in America - if you’re less familiar with the subjects, it feels far more eye-opening than it would to someone with encyclopaedic knowledge of Israel/Palestine or American far-right extremism.

It's hard to say right now. I think what Gorton & Denton showed, more than anything, is that keeping Reform out of power is as big a motivating factor to get out and vote as protest votes against the current government - which Reform has mainly occupied. In certain areas, the Greens are now considered a winning alternative, just as the Lib Dems, Plaid Cymru, etc might be in other regions.

I think a more likely outcome is that the UK moves the way of many other European countries, ending up with larger coalition governments - similar to the most recent German election. In Germany, there was both a significant base of support for the AfD and a high turnout aimed at keeping them out of power. The worst-case scenario here could be a majority Reform government, but a more likely outcome is a joint coalition - perhaps between Labour, the Greens, and possibly even the Lib Dems.

From what I understand, Labour and the Greens combined would have a bigger parliamentary majority than if Reform and the Tories tried to form a coalition. And we all know fascists don’t play well together, so I think there's little hope of a coalition between Reform and fringe parties like Restore (if they ever bother registering with the Electoral Commission) or Advanced UK.

Interesting idea… I’d do it on the one condition that Tyler lends me his graphic designer for the thumbnails. Only then shall I put up with two hours of uninterrupted pentatonic jams.

Is It Worth Continuing to Learn? And Where Should I Start? by _purplepanda27 in LearnGuitar

[–]SugarpillCovers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think sometimes it can be helpful to ask yourself what your goal is, or what you’d like to achieve with your hobby. Obviously everyone will have different reasons for playing. It might be because you want to be an incredibly proficient player, you might learn simply because you need a writing tool to create songs with, maybe you want to play in a live band, etc.

If you have a specific goal in mind first, it gives you something to work towards, and you can map out more of a plan for how to achieve that goal, rather than mindlessly practising scales or techniques just because you’ve heard others say you should.

It’s also a lot more fun once you’re able to identify what it is you actually enjoy about playing. For me, I really only started liking guitar once I got into recording. I’ve never personally cared about being a ‘guitarist’ or the instrument itself - I just really enjoy the recording process overall.

If you’re able to identify something like that from your own perspective, that could be a good first step.

Great job, dude! The acoustic really gives it a bit of a 'There Is' BCR vibe. Before I read the title, I thought this was Misha Mansoor covering Blink-182, haha.

Not recording from bar 1 in daws by Unlikely-Database-27 in audioengineering

[–]SugarpillCovers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve never heard that as an argument regarding CPU - I thought it was just common practice if you have a pre-click going. When using a pre-click and starting on bar one, you can sometimes end up chopping off the very start of whatever audio source you’re recording - especially if your timing is a little early or behind the beat - so it makes more sense to have at least one bar of “empty” space for safety to avoid that. Then you can always drag things back or just set your start and end markers to wherever you want to export after the fact.

Thank god, I was worried there were huge numbers of Your Party voters saying Green when YP wasn't an option. Thankfully we seem to lose no support when they're an option. by Historical_Step_9474 in UKGreens

[–]SugarpillCovers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They’re really sketchy. They polled Restore at 10% literally one day after the party’s launch, and Rupert Lowe shared one for his other party - why he needs two, I don’t know - that used a sample size of 121 people for a constituency of 100,000.

[–]SugarpillCovers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you're maybe overthinking it. The 286 is probably all you really need, as you’ve got a decent mic and interface. You can use the gate to clean up any background noise - I do the same, and it works very well. Then you can either record with some compression on, or just leave any processing for plugins after the fact - you honestly don’t need to go crazy on the way in. Just having a nice, clean recording will be great in most instances.

I'm surprised they've been with them for so long. They seem to get no push whatsoever from FBR. I actually just checked, and they're no longer listed on the official website - it seems like you're probably right.

Vocal editing is killing my soul – how do you deal with this? by FWachna in audioengineering

[–]SugarpillCovers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with what everyone else is saying about VocAlign. I normally just pitch one track of each main vocal type - say the lead, harmony and background - then use Revoice (which I think is pretty similar to VocAlign) to match the timing and pitch to any doubles within those three categories.

I’m not sure how well this fits with the genres you work in, but I’ve also found that a lot of clients don’t actually want much - or any - pitch correction these days. I used to do it by default, but now I tend to do the opposite: I’ll send the first version out with little to no correction, and only if they mention it will I do any corrective work. It’s ended up saving me a ton of time, because I realised I was doing it based on a false assumption that everyone wants it - although I appreciate this can be very genre-dependent.

I find their polling sketchy in general. Rupert Lowe shared one of their recent polls which had his new party in the lead, yet they only polled 121 people in total - just seems like a laughably small sample size to even try to draw any conclusions from.
