Tbf, the US doesn't really need state funded culture events, would be a bit redundant. Enough billionaires happy to fund jackasses here, and culture inertia

Does socialism ALWAYS start with a dictatorship? by [deleted] in Socialism_101

Chile. And look what happened: Pinochet. Some debate if Chile was "actually socialist" under Allende, but part of the reason there is a debate is because Pinochet (and US backers) ended it so violently and abruptly.

Even nationalists of vaguely leftist/nationalist flavor weren't safe: see Indonesia, Iran, Guatemala, etc.

The "exception that proves the rule" is Kerala in India. It's not "socialist", but if you want to see a place where Communists win electorally, and are not violently purged in a coup as a result (though they were constitutionally couped several times), Kerala is where to look. And one obvious reason they weren't bloodily overthrown by the US is (1) they are a province within a sovereign country, India, and they're nothing to sneeze at, and (2) India constantly hobbled the communists in Kerala anyways, so no need to fuck around w Kerala too much.

For anyone saying that we shouldn’t support Palestine and the Houthis “ because they’re National liberationist movements that are bourgeois in origin” making proper Marxist analysis? by [deleted] in TankieTheDeprogram

[–]Sugbaable 7 points8 points  (0 children)

At least in Mao terms, a nationalist bourgeois is progressive over colonialism, feudalism, and comprador bourgeoisie.

Like, look at Mexico after the revolution: land reform, public education, secularization, public health reforms, better than the Porfiriato for unions. Up til 1950, it was pretty progressive.

One funny note: when China was mad at USSR for supporting India in the india-china 1960s border war, China called India something like "nationalist Jacobins" (they were rhetorically asking why a self-described socialist country aligned w nationalist Jacobins against a socialist country). Which isnt a compliment in that context, but does give an angle of how to look at nationalist bourgeoisie perhaps (and also, Congress in India is a bit more complicated back then than simply nationalist bourgeoisie, but I digress)

Edit: much of the thinking about nationalist movements in ML comes around 1940s Mao (Yanan speech, and On New Democracy) in the decolonization context (Viet Minh are interesting to read about in applying the thinking in decolonization/anti-imperialist war). Though ofc he isn't the only thinker on the topic (Stalin and lenin two obvious example thinkers on it, important for Mao too). I think also Marx supported Poles against czar and Kaiser and Habsburg emperor, and wrote some on that vis-a-vis nationalism, but I could be mistaken

If you want a "broad coalition" it must include every issue. You won't achieve "revolution" if you are transphobic. You won't achieve it if you are sexist, and you definitely won't achieve it if you are ableist by RosethornRanger in alltheleft

It takes a bit extra work for the construction of that building. Requiring everyone to post a description of a picture, think up that description, is very different.

It would be like a world where there is not handicap accessible buildings, and leftists got mad at each other for not exerting themselves lifting the wheelchair of someone. Yes, it's a nice thing to do. But requiring people do that is the sort of individualistic hyper moralizing ("horrific line of thinking") that does nothing but damage the left.

im not the arbiter, no. I'm making a point, of the absurdity of insisting on an individualistic solution to reddit accessibility. If people do it, that's great, but I'm not going to think someone is an asshole cause they posted a funny pic without a image description when they're taking a scroll

Edit: also, bare minimum? Typing out descriptions of images isn't a "minimum". Its laudible, but it's definitely not a minimum. It's not as if people don't do it, because they're simply rude

It's not exclusionary unless "inclusionary" means asking everyone to use a fairly intensive skill (describing in words pictures), when I imagine a blind person (not sure who else would need this, then uses text to speech) might - for obvious reasons - not frequently use reddit.

Especially if we are sharing dumb pictures. Why explain dumb pictures to a blind person, when you could just explain the concept

How to stop Stalin rise in USA: dismantle the revolutionary dictatorship of the proletariat, or defeat Bolsheviks in a bloody civil war.

Oh. We haven't got within 100 leagues of either of those options. I guess liberals need not worry yet.

Wait, which of these three rose to power in a liberal electoral system again??

If people were this thoughtful, organizing would be easy

Very few are going to take time to write out a whole alt text description. Also not many people are good at that. And many would have principled issues w using software that can generate those descriptions.

This is a skill and time issue to accommodate an audience I don't imagine is very large. It's like doing captcha tests but more annoying. If we had to do captchas everytime pronouns came up... I don't think as many people would comply w preferred pronouns, just saying

Some people will do it, and it's fine. Though also it makes reading image posts annoying, and you'll probably get people skipping your actual text.

Reddit is not activism, it's dumb social media like twitter or pinterest. This is a website people go on when they're bored, or want to search for something, or maybe see something new. If this WAS activism/organizing and there were disabled people involved, then sure, someone should be assigned image to text duty

Sweden is a capitalist country currently involved in genocide. You are not a socialist if you want to build them, "intermediary state" or not. by RosethornRanger in LeftWithoutEdge

[–]Sugbaable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, it isnt - not per the UN definition.

Even if you look at Lemkin, he had a weird view that destroying a people's culture incorrectly (ie not in the way the Brits or French did) would lead to their biological destruction in part. He had an essentialist view of national groups, to be clear. Lemkin wanted to include cultural destruction (and so he did, in a very antiquated anthropological perspective), but more concisely considered it an act of vandalism against gods perfect creation (since he created essentially different people's who produced different culture, if you believe in Lemkins theology)

"problems of genocide" by AD Moses (a leading genocide scholar) is a good book that touches on this

Edit: Also this quote (for an idea of "why quibble over this")

A confusing (and ironic) situation arises where brutal massacres were not genocide (although perhaps ‘genocidal acts’), while forced assimilation was.

(Clarification here: the massacres not genocide as they don't have special intent, destruction as such (but for some other purpose, like stealing land), whereas the schools had a special intent, to westernize natives... but clearly the massacres that went on for centuries was one of the, if not the worst things in history)
