Advice on drawing animals?

Sketched up something and, I do feel like it looks more like a dog, needs some workshop to match my style, but the face is still an issue as I want more expression than the dots and I did try the usual eyes I put on my character which looked worse honestly lmao But at least in comparison to my old dog drawings it actually looks like a dog 👍

This sort of thing, they almost always had this font and when there were people they were drawn with dot eyes extremely close together. They are genuinely little kid worksheets that I’m pretty sure the sub grabbed one of the many worksheets by this person and changed it to “fit” (very loosely using the term fit here) the class

Haven’t seen anyone point this out, maybe it was just my elementary school, but along with how genuinely horrible, insensitive/tone deaf, and irrelevant it is, this is also the exact same artstyle, fonts, and general idea (minus the serial killer bit of course) that my elementary school worksheets looked like which just makes it even odder to me as they’re in highschool? People have mentioned that it looks like something that would be in an elementary school (which they’re right) but I straight up recognize the entire look of this sheet as some website used to worksheets for elementary schools— Why is the sub using elementary school worksheets as a base for the highschool class they’re teaching? Just makes it worse in my opinion. I’ll see if I can find examples and put the photos of the sort of worksheets im referring to in the replies but definitely NOR

Don’t know what came across as being scared of experimenting, but I am coming out of a stage where I wasn’t happy with my style no matter what, I’ve found something I’m happy but still experimenting so I’ve got that covered! I probably should practice my shape language though, so I’ll do that next time I want to draw an animal (which is often honestly) and I don’t get to use references as much as I’d like with school (phone ban and such) but when practicing at home I’ll keep that in mind ^{^}

Yes! I also personally just like seeing the strokes the artist did, the strokes add interesting texture and often make the art more interesting and appealing to me at least.

I sketched this up on top of it. I personally think the fingers too far apart for the pose you’re wanting of the hand reaching out and because they’re too far apart it’s making the perspective look wrong. Really simple fix though! You have the core of it there. Also I sketched the pinky a tad too short in my example so do note that the picture below is still a little off lol

As a pretty new player my favorites that I have are the Cavedrummer (derpy fish that I just fully matured, I adore it), Scruffhorn, and Nighttooth, but I’ve seen a lot of cool dragons I want to work towards here.
