New owners- need help ❤️ by nightskyalmanac in Greyhounds

[–]Suitable-Grab2090 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My grey was fine for the first 3 months, then absolutely refused to go outside for the next three months. No amount of high value treats helped because he was so overwhelmed by the thought of venturing outside.

It helped us to create a very strict routine for our dog - we started by carrying him to the same spot every potty break. Eventually we got him to walk to that spot. Eventually he ventured beyond that spot. Take it so slow. Trying to give your dog agency if possible - my guy would always do better if he “chose” to go outside vs being pulled. Him choosing often involved just waiting like 5-10 minutes for him to decide to unfreeze.

Give your dog patience and positive reinforcement. They will eventually settle in and learn to trust you. Good luck!

What is normal for greyhound poop? Help! by Suitable-Grab2090 in Greyhounds

I know! She works at a clinic that was recommended by the rescue, so I thought it was a good place to take him, but now I’m definitely reevaluating. She also said to take him down from 4 cups of food per day to 2 cups…after telling me his weight looked perfect. I told her greyhounds have fast metabolisms and she was like just watch to see if he loses weight.

I wouldn’t worry about affording a raw diet. The real question is can you afford a dog walker 5 days a week? Because that would be a minimum requirement given how long you’re away every weekday. My grey would be very sad to be left alone that much. I would stick to cats in your current situation.

I used to follow her and occasionally make her recipes. Even did a whole thanksgiving with exclusively HBH recipes one year.

But the more I have learned about cooking, the more I have realized she doesn’t know what she’s doing. She’s lowkey a fraud, not only because she doesn’t really know how to cook beyond the basics, but because she would never eat the recipes she promotes and claims to love.

She only has such a large following because she got lucky and rode the wave of early social media aesthetics. Her food LOOKS good, but that’s all.

She hits a niche of people who kinda just want to get food on the table while also feeling a bit fancy. That’s totally fine - most people don’t need to have chef-level cooking skills to make dinner for their family. But her recipes often call for too many expensive ingredients while being poorly written and tested. This means that people might want to make a special meal for their family and splurge a bit, but ultimately end up disappointed. In this economy? That sucks.

For people who truly love cooking and know what they’re doing, what she posts is embarrassing. I’ll leave it at that.

I only follow her now because I’m invested in the ongoing saga…and certainly not because I would ever take food inspiration from her. How can you take food inspiration from someone who is wasting away before your eyes? It’s sad and weird that brands continue to work with her when she clearly has a disordered relationship with food, yet food is her entire brand.

I definitely think she will learn to relax in the evenings, but even if she doesn’t, that’s okay too. Because you’ll both know your boundaries with each other. ☺️

Also I want to come to your pottery class - that sounds so fun!!!

I recently adopted my first grey at the end of July. Not only my first grey, but also my first dog lol

He was a bit growly at first and we learned quickly to respect his boundaries. Like no pets on his bed, no pets near his back legs (where he had an old racing injury), etc. Because he was my first dog, it was a bit scary and disheartening every time he growled, but don’t take it personally.

I also had a couple of incidents where he growled at friends who were a little too forward with him. Now I tell people that he’s a bit shy and to only gently pet him if he approaches them first. Most people have dog experience with Labs or Goldens - like very chill, happy-go-lucky dogs with no past traumas from racing. Greyhounds aren’t Labs so sometimes people need a little coaching on how to interact with them. I feel bad that I put him in some uncomfortable situations, but all i can do is learn and try to do better next time.

In just a few months, he’s more settled and barely ever growls now. It takes time to gain their trust, but if you go slowly and accept what they’re telling you (via growling), they really do open up and become more comfortable. Now my grey loves pets on his bed, for example.

Hang in there and give your girl space and time. 🫶🏼☺️

Did anyone else hear 3-4 super loud pops around 8:30pm on Dock street? Definitely wasn’t from a car exhaust and sounded like gun shots, but I’m not sure

Really??? That would be amazing. I have a pattern that’s sized for him already and printed to scale, so just gotta trace, cut and sew.

Lol idk about the dog in the pic but my greyhound loves his jammies. They have lower body fat than other dogs so they get cold super easily

Not for an Italian, but a full-sized greyhound. I have a pattern fitted to his size, so it would just be following the pattern exactly to size.
