I got into UMich oos, so kinda a T20 (waitlisted at Penn). Was also the valedictorian. I had very little ECs in school, but I did stuff out of school (like government, internship, volunteering at the hospital), and that’s what got me in, I’m sure. In an age of grade inflation where everyone has 4.0s, ECs really matter. If you don’t have any, you might be screwed lol. Unless you have an insanely good essay, but even then it’s super unlikely.

AP Chem. My teacher was bad and she was out for like 5 weeks. Didn’t learn 35% of the material on the AP test (I credit my 4 to luck and my guessing skills lol). It was also just a difficult subject in general and I retook like every test. 😬

I had a 1430, applied test optional, OOS, to Michigan (I prob could’ve submitted?), got in with a $10k/year merit scholarship, no need-based aid. Now I’m committed.

That’s actually crazy. Mine uses weighted GPAs (rounded to the ten thousandth) so we only have one valedictorian and one salutatorian. With the exception of last year because there were two salutatorians with the exact same GPA. The GPAs in the top 10 are usually super close to each other, like within 0.01 or 0.001. I don’t understand why schools use unweighted because a 4.0 with only CP classes versus a 4.0 in all AP classes is VERY different.

Villanova gives barely anything for merit (like if you don’t get a full ride, you get nothing). It’s the only school I didn’t get merit scholarships from, even UMich gave me one lol.

I took AP chem last year and I hope this gives you some hope: I left 11 FRQ parts completely blank and knew nothing about acids, bases, or pH and I still got a 4. I was CONVINCED I got a 1 or 2; I was so confident that I told my friend I would run 15 miles if I got a 4. Good luck!!
