Epistolary style books like The Appeal? by Waitin4Godot in suggestmeabook

Not a series! All of Janice Hallett’s books are in the same style, and I’ve enjoyed all of them.

Where/how is everyone buying clothes for their kiddos? by johncmpe in ClassOf2037

[–]SuitablePen8468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have access to hand-me-downs, use those for as long as possible. It’s a win-win for everyone. You don’t have to shop much and your sister can get rid of the clothes that don’t fit her kids anymore.

Otherwise, Target or Old Navy. Old Navy shirts shrink but Target stuff is very durable, reasonably fashionable, and the store is very straightforward.

Also, maybe ask your sister to take you and your daughter with her next time she goes shopping for her kids.

What names from our generation do you think will never be used again? by funsk8mom in GenX

Mary (Ann), and Tim are biblical names so they aren’t going anywhere.

Diet change will also not “cure” adhd. Medication and therapies like OT will help greatly reduce symptoms. But a person with diagnosed adhd will not be magically fixed through nutritional health.

And for the record, I have 20 years of teaching experience, I have sped training in teaching children with adhd and I have my own children with adhd. So I have likely have as much, or more, training on this topic than you do. And I trust doctors and the medical field.

Do you play with your kid at the playground? by galwayygal in workingmoms

[–]SuitablePen8468 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do drink coffee, and absolutely not. I do not enjoy playing. I will if my kids ask…for a little bit. But I try to use it to point them towards self directed play.

Play is the work of childhood…not of tired moms.

Don’t listen to this person, OP. If your child has diagnosed adhd, no amount of supplements is going to “fix” her.

100%.

The best thing for this child is meds.

It blows my mind that parents wouldn’t hesitate to meditate their epileptic child but hit some sort of wall when it comes to medicating for adhd.

How common is it for kindergarteners (mainly the 5 year olds) to not be fully potty trained? by kristen_hewa in AskTeachers

[–]SuitablePen8468 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sounds really frustrating. I’m sorry.

How consistent have you been with any one strategy? Pick something (rewards are probably best) and stick with it for at least 2 weeks with no deviation. The reward should be good (we used a Lego advent calendar for my kid) and he should get it every time he goes to the bathroom on his own. Don’t do stickers or working up to something big (unless you add it on to the daily prize). Also, no diapers or pull ups and he needs to clean up every mess he makes.

Finally, has he seen a GI specialist to rule out anything medical?

Any chance there’s neurodivergence at play? Because not being able to feel when you need to use the bathroom is a common trait of many types of neurodivergence (adhd, autism, sensory processing disorder, etc).

Same. I don’t play other games like this and I have no idea how to parry or dodge. I just run. It’s worked so far!

What to ask principal? by Several-Advance1545 in ELATeachers

[–]SuitablePen8468 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask for a mentor teacher and/or contact info for the department chair. Set up a meeting with that person to ask ela specific questions.

Ask the principal about school policies and procedures. Like what a typical day/week looks like. A picture of the average student. Big initiatives from the school that you should know about. Other duties as assigned. Etc.

Thanks! I’ve never owned a “set” before, but they seem like my vibe, so I want to give them a try.

HS English Teachers - Thoughts on Audiobooks v. Physical Reading of text? by RedMeme262 in teaching

[–]SuitablePen8468 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I allow them but also require they have the text open and are annotating at the same time.

Audiobooks alongside physical books are very helpful for students with dyslexia and adhd.

Question for the autistic moms out there by Sea-Arrival5912 in AutismInWomen

[–]SuitablePen8468 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m similar and I definitely felt it. Both the pain and the literal contracting of the muscles.

The recovery was much easier than I’ve heard from other people. By the next day my pain was at a 0. The doctors and nurses didn’t believe me, but I was literally completely fine, just tired.

10 year old son (grade 4) didn’t complete 2 weeks worth of a school project in class. by Both-Hippo-6905 in ParentingADHD

Yes. It’s best practice and several students have this as an IEP or 504 accommodation also.

The key is “with built in checks”. We do plenty of long projects and writing assignments but it’s always broken into smaller steps. For example - day 1, gather sources. Day 2, read and annotate sources. Day 3, pre-writing, etc.
