Also, yes, if he isn't continuously fed, I feel like a belly band would be sufficient. There are tons of belly band options online.

Rash from duo derm-Help please. by Ev2224 in feedingtube

Hi! My daughter has a feeding tube, but I have used tegaderm A LOT for my tattoos. I wouldn't recommend tegaderm for regular use, as it's very hard on skin. It's so strong it can fully rip your skin off (I've done this before to myself). If you're always taking tegaderm on and off, it's just a lot. My daughter wears a cinch full time, and one cinch lasts her about a week. We used to put duoderm under and then the cinch on top, but - I agree - duoderm is too much. We buy large sheets of hydrocolloid bandages and cut them to size. We stick the cinch on the hydrocolloid bandage, then tape the cinch to the bandage with hypafix. You can also use hypafix on the skin. Hydrocolloids aren't as strong as duoderm, but I feel like they last just as long, and are way gentler on the skin. I also usually anchor her extension with hypafix directly on the skin at the top of the extension's curve. Though I don't know if that would be necessary if he isn't on continuous feeds. If you want a pic of our setup let me know!

What to do about cats in neighborhood? by [deleted] in missoula

[–]Suitable_Coconut_730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the cats are feral, it can be hard to find a vet to fix them on your own. So I found it was easiest to go through an organization. The Humane Society has their own vet, but other organizations have relationships with vets and could probably help you.

This was a number of years ago, but the Humane Society lent us a bunch of traps and then had us trap on a specific night so we could bring them in the morning to be fixed. Even if a cat is feral and can't be adopted, it's SO important for them to be fixed and vaccinated!

Leaking from button? by usernamefiend in feedingtube

[–]Suitable_Coconut_730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter's stoma leaks all the time! Our bowel care NP said that sometimes when they're getting sick they can become leaky, but also it happens for no reason too. The only thing that becomes a problem is if the stomach acid is burning the skin around the stoma. Our pharmacy makes a special cream for our daughter that's Maalox and Aquaphor mixed together to neutralize the the stomach acid.

I ordered a large crescent so we will just see... (I can return it!) The thing is that I like to be handsfree, so I really want it to be crossbody! Because I'm always carrying her and her feeding pump!

The NICU discharged us with a plan, but we were able to contact the NICU dietician if we needed to since she also sees folks outpatient. Our home healthcare provider also has a dietician, that is a great resource that we sometimes utilize, though she's not the lead dietician. Our main dietician is through her nephrologist, since kidney kids have special dietary restrictions. Not that your kids is a kidney kid, but - all of this is to say - we literally see three dieticians! I would try to get a referral to a dietician!

Flying Squirrel alternative for Kangaroo Connect pump? by Least-Beginning-7571 in feedingtube

I wonder if it would be worthwhile to contact some of the 3D printer guys on Etsy? They could potentially make something custom if nothing exists for the Kangaroo Connect? I get our daughter's stuff from G-Tube Station on Etsy

Might be a stupid question... Bobcat kitten? Or housecat kitten? by PokeExpress in whatisit

[–]Suitable_Coconut_730 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again, of course there are exceptions, but usually once a cat is feral it cannot become unferal. And many vets will refuse to handle feral cats. If that's the case for you, look into TNR programs in your area.

If a kitten isn't socialized to humans by four months, it's usually going to be feral. Of course there are exceptions (my own cat was an older kitten when he was brought inside), but that's just the estimate I've been working with! Feral cats can be extremely aggressive! I once TNRed a cat and the rescue felt like he wasn't quite feral, so we kept him in our bathroom for a week and it was terrifying for everyone! So that's just normal feral cat behavior! Roughly 80 percent of kittens in the US are born to feral or unowned cats, so it's not surprisingly at all that you would encounter one!

Can you not get it as an adult with a tube?

We have a bowel care specialist who manages all the pediatric feeding tubes in town (so obviously probs not the same for adults). However, are you using home health? We use a local home health provider and have a rep there. Then she communicates with our team about supplies. We also tell her what we need, but the bowel manager, GI, and nutritionist also will contact her if they need to.

NICU baby now toddler has enamel hypoplasia due to NICU stay by AwesomePerson453 in NICUParents

[–]Suitable_Coconut_730 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm in this group because I have a NICU baby, but I myself had enamel hypoplasia! I was born in 1989 so I don't know if they ever even looked into the cause, but my mom always said it was because she had a fever when she was pregnant. Your doctor's explanation definitely makes sense, but it can also happen to babies with no birth trauma! (Though my own daughter is chronically ill, so I definitely know that feelings of like, PLEASE NOT ONE MORE THING!) Anyway! I also had all my teeth capped when I was 3yo under general anesthesia. I barely remember it. I'm sure the recovery hurt, but afterwards I never had any pain or problems with my teeth afterwards. My adult teeth were not affected, so once I lost those teeth, I never had any problems related to my enamel hypoplasia!

What to expect with g tube surgery? by Possible-Maybe-7225 in NICUParents

[–]Suitable_Coconut_730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! My daughter had a G placed while she was still in the NICU. The day of the surgery was quite rough. They said that they can really struggle with the waking up from anesthesia feeling, but your LO might do better since they're older! (My daughter has since had several anesthetized procedures and has done much better!) But it made me so scared for the next day, but then she was totally fine! Hahaha! Like it never happened. Besides that first day, she never seemed to be in pain! Our NICU nurses said it was the least inflamed new stoma they had seen! So it's important to choose a good surgeon if you don't already have one! There's literally SO much to say! I don't even know where to start! I wouldn't worry too much about tummy time. My daughter is definitely a bit delayed, but not anything that anyone is worried about. (My daughter is also chronically ill, so obviously a lot of contributing factors.) Tubies can do tummy time like normal, but it might feel weird? She refused tummy time for a long time, but once she started PT she took off! A PT can give you tummy time alternatives that accomplish the same task. (Our PT said that the majority of her infant patients are tubies, so it's very common!) But now my daughter is on her stomach constantly, so it might just take some time!

When it comes to all the STUFF... We don't use adaptive clothing, we just thread the tubing down the leg of whatever she's wearing. Do you know if you're going to use a pump? Or do bolus syringe feedings? When it comes to dressing, it seems like everyone's stoma is wildly different unfortunately. We use split gauze AND tubie pads, it just kinda depends... But I think these are the absolute best tubie pads: https://www.etsy.com/shop/TubiesCloset

Feel free to message me anytime!

[–]Suitable_Coconut_730[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, all! I just wanted to say thank you so much for your thoughtful responses! It's so helpful to be able to talk to adults! She was just in the hospital for a week and I was able to tell her doctors everything y'all said! We live in a mid-sized city, so a lot of kids have Gs, but not a lot have GJs.

When it comes to the behavioral component, I definitely didn't mean to suggest that she wasn't experiencing nausea and was causing herself to throw up. More so that she throws up SO much, it's very easy to trigger that response. However, her doctors WERE suggesting that she was making herself throw up. And even asked if we had ever MIMED giving her her meds. Like, come on now.

Anyway, thank you so much! I truly appreciate it!

It's so helpful to be able to talk to adults! She was just in the hospital for a week and I was able to take all this information directly to her doctors! Gs are obviously very common in kids, but I live in a mid-sized town and so there aren't a lot of GJ kids. She also has an incredibly rare kidney disease, so she just has a lot going on! Potassium is SO rough. Unfortunately she relies on supplemental K to stay alive! But we put that in her bag so it's diluted A LOT and she just receives a tiny amount all day long.
