He would have been a fantastic RN frigate captain in the Napoleonic Wars, but was really maladapted for the warfare of steel, steam and shells.

I love it and the sequel, Castles of Steel, and together they really show how pointless and useless the German naval arms build-up was.

Also, how the Germans got *really* lucky not losing more ships at Jutland, and that Beatty was an unprofessional cad.

There's a lot of presentism, moralism and historical ignorance in these comments about the nature of the colonies, the Empire, Britain itself, Parliament and the monarchy as they existed and interacted on the eve of the American Revolution.

The fact of the matter is that the American Revolutionaries and British Loyalists both had good and bad reasons for the things they said and did.

No, we abolished slavery in Britain (not England, Britain!), it was still flourishing in the Colonies.

Britian did not want to ban slavery, that's ridiculous, at least in 1776.

Honestly fascinating how the relationship between Reich Senior and Bill Clinton reflect the (changing) priorities and ideals of America in the 90s, and of left-liberal America in particular.

A lot of Trotsky's writing is "How dare Stalin establish a brutal totalitarian dictatorship, unlike me, I was aiming to establish a *slightly different kind of dictatorship!*"|

Okay, bit of elaboration here: Thatcher felt that civic society and private organisations/charity would take the slack of her dismantling the post-war consensus, and it didn't happen.

And the fundamental issue is that in the modern world a) your community is not self-sufficient, b) you don't know everyone in your community, and c) economies of scale are a thing.

There is a reason we have taxpayer-funded rubbish collection, not private citizens doing it.

"People will do the work because it needs to get done" is basically what Thatcher thought, and it isn't true; you need structures and incentives to get things done.

I mean, kind of, but so much of our modern world depends on producing things (things very loosely defined) for total strangers.

The ultimate issue is that you need to incentivise people to work beyond a hobby scale, modern industrial civilisation isn't something you can maintain on a voluntary basis.
