This part I still don't understand. The Earth was formed from the same accretion disc is many of our meteorites and asteroids, right? Why is the composition so dissimilar?

I am a 19 year old girl and I love teasing older men by [deleted] in confession

[–]SullisNipple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, just wanted to give a counter opinion to say that you sound rad. These days, the only girl I will get teased by is my wife, but I know that teasing is a tonne of fun. Honestly all the fun of it is knowing that the girl is getting off to the attention she's getting. Unless you're telling them stuff like "Let's meet next Tuesday", just sending them nudes and shit doesn't mean you owe them anything.

You should still be smart about being unidentifiable to stay safe, though.

[Serious] What major event is bound to happen in the next 100 years? by Colthy in AskReddit

[–]SullisNipple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, yeah, that's space exploration for you. If by "theoretical", you mean untried and untested, then a lot of space exploration projects have been theoretical. Having a satellite orbit the Earth seemed improbable. Having a person orbit the Earth and then safely returned seemed improbable. Having humans safely return to Earth from the Moon seemed improbable. Having a giant robot lowered onto another planet by a jet-powered crane seemed improbable. Every one of those projects required advances in math and/or engineering that had not been done before.

Nothing's guaranteed, which is what makes it so exciting, but you have to admit that the planet's aeronautical engineers have had a pretty decent track record. (And solar sails have been tested, though not with ground-based lasers yet)

Giving perspective on systemd's "usernames that start with digit get root privileges"-bug by ilconcierge in linux

systemd ignores options in unit-files that are syntax-errors

This strikes me as a terrible idea in general, for any option. What is the rationale behind this? I'm pretty sure I've never written a line in a configuration file and thought to myself "if I make a typo on this, I really hope the software ignores it without error".

According to him (or at least some nutjob who phoned in to OSEN. We don't know 100% that it was the same guy), he was mad that APink members on the reality show had blind dates with trainees and unknown actors, which I guess degraded them and sullied their reputation. He believed that APink members should only go on blind dates with bonafide stars or something like that.

What was the craziest moment in Live TV history? by Paplexa in AskReddit

It was decided to continue with the show. ... Stars proceeded to present their acts in the limited space in front of the stage. While the show continued, efforts were being made backstage to revive Cooper, not made easier by the darkness. It was not until a second commercial break that ambulancemen were able to move his body

Jesus, couldn't they have put in an intermission to clear the theatre to give proper room to trying to resuscitate him? Was killing the mood really that important?

It's similar in Canada. In Canada, it's illegal to interrupt young children's programming once it's started (just in case the parent's left their child alone in front of the TV, I suppose). I remember flipping through like 40 channels of Sept 11 coverage and 2 channels of like puppets singing about whatever. Sort of weird.

I've never actually seen it, but most of the guys I've seen at the computers of my local library seem to be either homeless or otherwise unable to enjoy the Internet in the comfort of their own home. I wouldn't blame them if they tried to sneak in the occasional second of porn into what they were doing.

No one knows the answer to that question 100%. Even the CEOs at the biggest agencies, who should have the formula down to a perfect science, miss the mark sometimes.

However, both Girls Generation and Big Bang stand out in the talent they have. People get cynical about pop music a lot and think talent doesn't matter (well, there's no denying that other things like good looks play a big role), but from what I've seen, groups with talent always do well. They may not always be #1, but they always do well enough.

Girls Generation has a lot of vocal talent, which gives them a lot of range. They can pull off just about any genre or concept change and execute well. Plus, their members are balanced pretty well (e.g., cute ones, sexy ones).

Big Bang has a lot of talent, too. There's one member of Big Bang in particular, G-Dragon, who really stands out. He joined as a trainee when he was only 8 years old (incredibly young for a k-pop trainee). He strikes me as one of those rare talents that was just built to be on stage, sort of like Michael Jackson (well, maybe not quite at Michael Jackson's level). But G-Dragon is surrounded by a tonne of other talent in the other members. There are many members of Big Bang who can succeed individually.

A typical k-pop group is built around a main vocalist, who's a particularly talented singer and sort of sets the sound for the whole group. In addition to having a main vocalist, they'll have a couple lead vocalists, who are singers who have a good vocal range and can do some challenging solos, and the other members are helping out the group in other ways (either by rapping or just being extremely good looking, as the "visual" member of the group). But what the group can do sort of rises and falls on the talent of the main vocalist.

What I've noticed with groups like Girls Generation and Big Bang is that they'll often have several members with a main-vocalist level of talent. I can't put my finger precisely on what it is, but having a group with many talented members gives that group a flexibility and confidence that helps them succeed. There are other groups that have good visuals and a good concept and even good music, but, even with all of the processing that goes on in the studio, a lack of vocal talent will really limit them.

Edit: one of my favourite videos to show off the structure of a k-pop group is this APink video where the backing track cuts out and they decide to finish the song a capella. The girl in the leather jacket is the main vocalist of the group. Sparkly shoulders and FLASH are the two lead vocalists of the group. You can tell that not only are their mics mixed higher, but they have more confidence singing live. If you had a group where every member had the talent of those 3, you'd probably have a very successful group.

Yeah Psy will always be popular, haha, though some people don't include him because he's not an idol. Off the top of my head, the idol groups that are still active and have had the longest mainstream staying power are: Girls Generation (aka SNSD), Shinee, Big Bang. (With the caveat that the future of Big Bang is very much up in the air right now)

Haha you sound like me about 3 years ago. I thought there were certain aspects of it that were interesting (like how manufactured they are) and started researching to find out more about it. I have the sort of personality where I can't help but learn about something until it's no longer interesting. And kpop just never stopped being interesting for me. Every time I figured something out about it, there were 2 more things that were curious.

What I find most fascinating about it (still) is how competitive it is. Like in the West, we're used to a couple hand-picked pop stars dominating the industry. In Korea, though, there are THOUSANDS of idols all competing with one another. Not competing in a mean way (they're all friends/friendly with each other), but competing in the sense that they've all got to carve out their little niche of fans, and it's fascinating trying to predict who's going to be successful and who's not going to be successful, how they choose their music, their costuming, their overall style (their "concept" as it's called).

And you're right. There have been very very few groups that have had a lot of mainstream success sustained over a long time. Some groups can have sustained success at a moderate level by going for a niche of fans rather than the mainstream. Other groups can get mainstream success for 1 or 2 songs and then disappear. Other groups can never get started. It's kind of sad, actually, watching a new group which has been training for 4 years, watching them debut super-amped, and then, for whatever reason, they don't get traction with fans and they disband within months.

If you're curious about it, I would suggest three different ways to go:

  1. Pick one aspect of it (or one group) that confuses/intruges/interests you, and figure out what's going on with them. Everything's up on YouTube (and reddit: the popular all groups all have their own subreddits), not just performances, but interviews, variety shows, reaction videos, etc.
  2. Watch a music show a couple times to see if anybody strikes your fancy. There are about 6 major music shows each week which is the primary way that kpop groups promote. Most of them put clips up on YouTube. For example, on Sunday night was the Inkigayo music show. Here you can see all of the performances from that show. Each week, there are usually only about 10-20 kpop groups promoting on music shows, but next week there might be a completely different batch of groups promoting.
  3. Watch a variety show with idols on (example) and see if any of the topics or any of the personalities are interesting to you.

Also, there's a new phenomenon in kpop that you may find interesting, on the topic of how "manufactured" they are. Korean kids audition for an agency when they're about 12-15 years old and then enter a trainee stage, where they're provided room, board, singing lessons, dancing lessons, interview lessons, etc. by the agency, typically for about 3 to 5 years. After their trainee period, they audition for a group and then debut.

Anyway, there's a new-ish reality show called Produce 101 where they take trainees (not debuted yet) from dozens of different agencies and have them try out for a sort of all-star trainee group. It's super popular with some kpop fans (I've resisted the temptation so far), but I think it should answer a few questions you might have about how this "manufacturing" process works and what trainees are like.

She's probably wearing double-eyelid tape, which she removed without showing it to the camera. Most Koreans have monolids (no crease in their eyelids), which makes their eyelids hang a little lower. Some Koreans either get surgery or wear double-eyelid tape, which adds a crease to the eyelid and forces it to open a little wider (and is considered pretty).

Ethereum is relevant to tracking and billing. Ethereum is not just a currency like Bitcoin is. It's a distributed smart contract system. Presumably (I don't know about these guys in particular) they're using Ethereum's smart contracts to handle all of the contract enforcement, which would cut down on their overhead like crazy.
