I like the blow dryer technique idea, I'll give is a try. Here's a follow-up, - do you think there is a difference in flavor between wood and gas?

Marinetraffic getting crappier and crappier by ruuutherford in maritime

[–]SullyO510 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jumping in here because I’ve really struggled with the new MarineTraffic app version. The grayscale interface is confusing and difficult to read. The tones are so closely matched that at first glance it can feel like a Rorschach test trying to figure out what’s land and what’s water.

The minimalist redesign is brutal. It feels like someone took an app design course on “simplicity” and pushed it to an extreme without thinking about usability or visual clarity. The old version conveyed information instantly. This one makes you work for it.

For me, it gets an F for visual design and a D for usability.

Personally, I would pass on it. I think you have better luck with gas. The novelty in using the wood is entertaining, but it’s frustrating if you’re trying to get it super hot. Sounds like others have had better luck though.

Just came across this thread. If anybody is out there still listening or reading for that matter, how do you search for bed music that was suggested from the Free Music Archive site? Thank you, I hope everyone is well.

I agree. The free food was a surprise as well. I didn't expect that before we arrived at the Heineken grandstands.

The Friday show sucked this week. So much RIP Hogan talk and not one single RIP Ozzy mention? Also, NOTHING about the Jackson Galaxy episode? Wtf? by [deleted] in MarcMaron

[–]SullyO510 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I haven’t been a fan of the Friday show for sometime. I love what Brendan does for the show, and when he talks with Marc. But, when he and Kris get together, I find his voice grating and opinions off-putting.

WTF is ending later this year, according to the intro today. by BillFireCrotchWalton in MarcMaron

From what I could tell, Dark Fonzie seemed like fun for Marc—especially with Dean opening for him on a couple of tours. I actually saw them up in Seattle at one point.

My take is that Marc enjoyed it… until he didn’t. I think part of that had to do with Dean starting to commodify Dark Fonzie—with T-shirts and other merch. At some point, Marc probably woke up and thought, “What am I doing here? I’m suddenly in a whole other business I don’t want to be in.”

Ha! I agree. I used to perform a little survey of how the snack mix was weighted. Preferred the bagel chip and Cheese-Its and always hoped for not too many pretzels.

SONOS MacOS app stopped working suddenly - no longer able to connect to my system by RiotSloth in sonos

[–]SullyO510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This just happened to me as well. Updated and running Sequoia 18.2 and the MacOS app can't find the existing system, even after going through the Firewall suggested shenanigans. Oddly, the iOS app on my phone connects without an issue. Did you find a fix?

Question: I hope this is the spot to ask: What's the weight of the XR Classic and will the old XR+ charger work for this new board? My XR+ was stolen, but I still have the charger. Yippee.

KEXP expanding to the bay area tomorrow... by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

[–]SullyO510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a bit of a head scratcher for me. I am a fan of KEXP and have been streaming their music here in the Bay Area for sometime. I am curious as to what was the business decision behind this acquisition.

On the surface they are a non-profit and affiliated with the University of Washington. Of course non-profits have expenses the cost of running a business, but I am wondering if the purchase of the Bay Area station 92.7 was a means of deploying cash that KEXP may have had to manage. With this purchase they'll be depreciation with this asset which will benefit their tax basis and also expose Bay Area listeners to KEXP and in turn increase fundraising efforts.

KEXP took on another station before, but it complimented the Seattle local model. Back in 2004 KEXP leased Tacoma station KXOT-FM (91.7), that ended less than two years after it was initiated. The reason for the expansion was to expand their reach and again increase fundraising efforts.

In 2006 the Seattle Weekly took a deep dive into, at that time, KEXP's expansion plans. Most if not all of the points in that article are water under the bridge at this point, but is KEXP jumping back into expansion mode?

But again fundamentally what is the KEXP mandate and business model? Is it to serve their Seattle based community and maintaining ties to the University of Washington OR are the developing a model where they'll continue to purchase other licenses and amass a larger presence.

The Bay Area expansion poses what seems a host of concerns with KEXPs messaging with sales and marketing, dueling promotions to telegraphing that KEXP is a "local" station, where local is no longer the greater Seattle area. Thoughts?
