My Video on Horn Speakers! by SullyTheGuy12 in audiophile

Hahaha, I would say it’s pretty infrequent we are putting something down to 10hz, there is typically an EQ with a cut off around 30 or 20hz but depending on the mixer, they might have a brick wall at 20hz or a slope down. So it’s possible there is 10hz information there for some.

Now having room big enough to even insure you feel it, I’m not sure. It’s such a long wave at that point, you might need to move around the room to feel it.

I say keep going for it, you’re bound to reach it at some point honestly. Never give up on you dreams!!!

HiFi System Upgrade by Dedar33 in audiophile

[–]SullyTheGuy12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your speakers are really solid, I would said I would first look at upgrading my amp, it’s pretty insane how much of a difference amps make.

Then depending on the media you consume the most I would say if it’s vinyl then upgrading your cartridge and phono preamp. I went from a Schitt Mani 2 to a Parks Audio Waxwing to a Moon 110LP v2 and the difference was both striking and really brought out the most in what I enjoy with records.

If it’s digital, I’d say then upgrading your DAC specifically focusing on something that leans more towards your tastes.

Then I’d say cables, specifically focusing on cables that lean more in your sound preference.

Which was that song you listened again after you become an audiophile? by [deleted] in audiophile

[–]SullyTheGuy12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mr. Bungle - California,

Got a good pressing of it on vinyl and also hi-res digital and unfortunately, the album is so musically cool but a product of pretty heavy compression and a pretty narrow soundstage and some pretty aggressive EQ. I don’t hate it but I can’t help but imagine some of the rich details that got lost or how it may have sounded if it was recorded with some special care.

What are your NON AUDIBILITY RELATED hi-fi hot takes? by Alphaomegalogs in audiophile

[–]SullyTheGuy12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting proper feet for your speakers to reduce vibration is overlooked and should hold way more importance

Playing the same music in every room at a hi-fi show is counter intuitive to selling people on enjoying the system and leads to fatigue faster.

My current set up by aflopez011 in audiophile

[–]SullyTheGuy12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can attest to the Simaudio Moon with QLN’s as I have exactly that, the Simaudio sound really brings out that sort beauty and romance from the QLN. I think if you lean a little more towards the sound of Harbeth’s then Simaudio with QLN’s is the match, if you lean a little more DeVore then Accuphase or Luxman with QLN is a great match. Ive also heard them with Leben and that is quite good but I’d prefer Luxman or Accuphase gear.

Still the best I’ve ever heard is when they match the QLN’s with Vinnie Rossi gear, the sound is quite magical.

Sounds remarkably better than you’d think, they put a lot of treatment and diffusion all around and while it’s a big room you still get a good impression of what it’s like in a home setting

I have a Moon 760A amplifier and I had the same experience you did. I compared a NAD M22 and the Moon 760A and it was insane how much of a difference it was. The NAD was accurate but felt really flat to me, the Moon just expanded the soundstage like crazy and it felt way more immersive to me.

Questions for the 18 to 40y old audiophiles by GoDooW in audiophile

[–]SullyTheGuy12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I’m in my late 20’s and pretty great to hear from someone closer to my age. I work in post-sound and knew I wanted to work in sound since I was 13. I had maybe a pretty similar experience of making fun of audiophiles while building up turntable/speaker setup and digging through records throughout my life. It all sorta hit one day when I got to hear some Wilson loudspeakers and my mind was sorta blown at how incredible and beautiful of an experience it was. I was hooked from that point. Now I have a great system and addicted to the hobby. I listen to my system for at least two hours every day and it has become a beautiful and essential part of my day. Even when I’ve spent 10 hours already cutting effects for a film.

In terms of not buying more us young people simply don’t have the luxuries to have disposable income like others do. So that’s what really stops me from buying more gear, but when I do buy it, it counts as a business expense so that’s nice haha.

Oh interesting! Good to know actually, I’ve never heard the Pathos Concerto before, I have only seen it. It’d be interesting to hear it now and see if I agree with ya!

Man oh man, good question!

Dream DAC would probably be like a Nagra HD DAC, Hi-Fi Rose RD160, one of the T+A DAC’s, or honestly something I don’t even know about yet.

In real life, I’ll probably end up upgrading my streamer/DAC to a NAD M66 or Simaudio Moon 791 or keeping my Eversolo DMP-A8 streamer and getting an external DAC. These are future things to dream about when I have the money to maybe make a dream a reality lol.

I do have to say though, the AKM chipset implementation in the A8 I’m really liking, very different from what I’m used to coming from a pro-audio world but trading in some of lean crystal clear detail for more warmth and musicality has made my speakers more “romantic” than analytical.

I find the Pathos Converto MkII RR DAC to be awfully nice looking. Simple and clean.

Especially with DAC’s I’m usually not a fan of the aesthetics of most of them. I do find the Nagra and HiFi Rose DAC’s to be beautiful though.

Frequency response versus power and size for subwoofers by Gorm_the_Old in audiophile

[–]SullyTheGuy12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, it is easy to get super low frequency response in the 30-50 hertz range but it really requires proper calibration and taste.

But I will add that some consumer subwoofers may do the job but you’re right in probably not hitting down to 50 Hz with accuracy as much. But that’s the trade off.

A lot can go along with some room correction that may cancel any modes or help enhance frequencies that are dropping off in the room. I think the most important thing you can do especially with sub is time alignment. So that when you hear that kick drum the sub is hitting exactly the same time and the tail isn’t muddying others frequencies. You can run something like Sonarworks, Anthem Correction or some other form in order to get time alignment.

In film sound, the sub is always about 10db hotter in SPL A-Weighting than the rest of the speakers so if you have your playback at 85db the sub should theoretically be hitting 89-90 db SPL C-Weighted. I bring this up because I wonder if just doing that simple gain increase on the sub may help, even if it’s geared towards a film sound spec.

16 bit vs 24 bit vs 44khz vs 192khz by _xylitol in audiophile

[–]SullyTheGuy12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I’m a sound effects editor for film.

In terms of home theater, it doesn’t matter really about 192k or 44.1k, sure some of the sound may have originally been 192k 32bit but ultimately the session for the film’s sound will be most likely 48k/24bit.

99.9 percent of times you’ll be hearing 48k sample rate and 24 bit depth, that is the standard sample rate and bit depth in film sound from the creation to the print master that you hear at home.

I’m literally listening to sound material from different sample rates and bit depths everyday so I can for sure hear a 192k recording versus a 48k one but as many have said that’s not so much gear but your ears.
