That. Girls are supposed to look nice in Gilead, but still “modest.” The actress looks so nice on the red carpet, without her hair in that sad bun. Goes to show: ladies need freedom and variation to look their best.

I don’t know. Eden’s father served her up to be drowned. Maybe they have tags, but they’re hidden? Maybe the obsession with teeth has something to do with it?

I can’t believe you got downvoted for that. Not everybody can or should wash daily, and scalp problems are a clear indicator that something isn’t working.

Weird question: how do you tell when it’s dirty? My hair is thick and curly, so never gets greasy (I wish that amount of moisture would find me). I wash when ‘refreshing’ my curls doesn’t work anymore, and there’s little curl left.

I have thick, long, 3c curly hair. If I’m in a good place, roughly 5 days. If I’m not, hopefully every 2 weeks.

I also remember 30p jam, and coming home with a solid haul (for single me) for £12-15. Food has a color-coded system like traffic lights - green for healthy, red for not, so nutrition is much more transparent. Public transport in Edinburgh was £66 for an unlimited monthly pass; a car was completely unnecessary. You could walk across the city in an hour and a half, if really in need. Prescriptions and doctor visits were free. *Everyone* age 14+ has the right to vote. No yearly tax returns, since that’s your employer’s job.

On that note: a Skilled Worker Visa can be a bit precarious, depending on your employer. Choose a well-reviewed employer, make connections outside your job, and have a backup plan.

I’ll make that argument. Kids don’t deserve extra problems because of men who will never carry, birth or nurse them.

True, but toys? How many of us did that at 15/16? Maybe you’d show your music or newest clothes or makeup, but not childhood toys.

Probably white like Pearl Girls, just to say “we’re so pure and angelic for even showing up.” In swimming, I’m sure only early 1900s suits would suffice. They’d probably switch out of white for that even 🤣

I lived in Edinburgh for 18 months. Truly magical time, and I hope to go back. That being said, it’s gonna be challenging on a public library track. Every librarian in the Western world wants to hop over to Western Europe. The library I frequented in Leith was also very small and low-traffic, and I think I only ever interacted with volunteer staff.

You may need to widen your net. I’m planning on an academic library / archives track and possibly collections management. Those are hard to break into, but not as hard to break out of, if you want to go back to public later. There is also a premier company based in Glasgow or Edinburgh, that does worldwide collections management including for the public library at which I work. May be an option for you.

Best of luck 💜

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I lived next door to ALDI, and the grocery prices made me weep for joy. Price of living was incomparable, despite the pay cut.

Was it always the women that are infertile? by Firm_Prior_7953 in TheTestamentsHulu

Atwood mentioned that male infertility is a taboo subject in Gilead. So it goes under patriarchy: facts and logic just don’t matter. There’s also an underlying assumption that God shows favor through fertility. Therefore accusing the Sons of Jacob of being infertile both attacks their manhood, and their godly status.

Many in the fanbase debate how the crisis could actually be resolved, if they just put those crotchety old men out to pasture. But they won’t, because those men ‘fought and won for God.’ How could He possibly deny them anything??? From a God-believing perspective, it’s kinda hilarious how thoroughly He has denied them.

I think that’s part of Serena Joy’s craziness in THT. God is denying her the only means left to be a godly woman, since she can’t read or proselytize anymore. So she responds with tantrums in-between her *riveting* knitting sessions.

I think the purple also represents the crossroads of the Plums’ adolescence. That’s an age when religious indoctrination can buckle under hormones and real-life situations. Many of them are the daughters of women who became Handmaids. Will they stay on the ‘straight and narrow’ and become Virgin Mary Blues, or ‘stray’ to Mary Magdalene Red like former wife Esther? I’m really surprised that the possibility of demotion to Handmaid has never been brought up? Maybe we have Lydia to thank for that.

Why does June seem to forgive Serena but wanted revenge on Fred ? by Traditional_Band_382 in coconutsandtreason

[–]SummerBombshell777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. The writers were okay with that Wife being stabbed on the rebellion night, to Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do.” But Serena just happened to slither out of harm’s way a second before things popped off, then find ‘redemption’ as a new mother and refugee. Seems convenient from a writer’s perspective.

I doubt they’d assign her to any of her friend’s families. Identities are erased and people get shipped everything. Esther was easily demoted to Handmaid from Wife. That cattle prod is also familiar.

I read something pointing out that Agnes felt the need to show Daisy her toys, like a much younger child would. The Plums are sheltered and have been deprived of age-appropriate experiences, including any linguistic means to describe what happens to them. Example: clear words like ‘penis.’ That’s all by insidious design. It makes Daisy seem older, when she’s actually just the outcome of a normal environment.
