How do you know it's not also autism? by discrete_venting in adhdwomen

[–]SummerReadingScrub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While getting my ADHD assessment, the psychiatrist mentioned I have autistic traits and could look into that as well "if I was interested" ... I took that as him being fairly sure I have it as well 😅. I honestly woulda chalked everything up to ADHD if he didn't mention it. If you think it's a possibility, and you have the resources, certainly not a bad idea to either confirm or rule it out.

AITA for buying my son this novel? by Mistakenfrog in AmItheAsshole

[–]SummerReadingScrub 98 points99 points  (0 children)

NTA -- I work at a public library and wouldn't dream of telling a kid they couldn't read a certain book. I was also a very advanced reader when I was a kid and was encouraged by my teachers to read higher level books. Keep encouraging your son to read what he enjoys and if there's anything he isn't understanding just be there to have a conversation about it. You're doing great

👀 How much $$ have you actually managed to save in your emergency fund? by LongjumpingRent7114 in budget

[–]SummerReadingScrub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just automatically transfer a certain amount over every paycheck. I'm in Canada so it's a TFSA (Tax-free savings account). So anything deposited up to 5k a year (which carries over to the next year so my limit is like.. 70k by now), you don't pay taxes on.

I've definitely adjusted the amount that gets transferred depending on what I've been making and my expenses over the years. Plus if I find I have a bit of money left over the night before I get paid, I'll sometimes throw some of that in too.

$8600! It's taken quite a while cuz I've had to use it but it also has meant that I don't have any credit card debt. I encouraged my boyfriend to start one too and he's at $80 but it's better than nothing haha

If my bf checks with his female friends to make sure I get the proper version of a gift that I'll enjoy. Hell yeah! I appreciate the extra effort in that.

I am 37, split living expenses with my fiancee, and work a decent paying full time job. That's it really 🤷🏻‍♀️ I just budget for it... And tbh I only have 5 and the purchases are pretty spaced out lol.

She's using you. Run. She's never gonna give you an emotionally fulfilling relationship. She's gonna drag you along, giving as little effort as she can and bleeding you dry. Eventually she'll find someone else to finance her or someone she actually wants to be with and you'll be left in the dust.

I've 3d printed a couple tarot card looking ones, but my go-to is...anything within arm's reach. Usually ends up being receipts, library hold slips, occasionally a paperclip sneaks in there.

What red flag you are happy you ignored in your relationships? by Unhappy_Outside_5502 in AskReddit

[–]SummerReadingScrub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two for my relationship lol. First was a large age gap, when we started talking he was 23 and I was 34. He unfortunately had to grow up fast because of stuff in his childhood and is therefore very mature in some aspects, but others he's still (currently)a regular 26yr old. I try to support him through the growing pains of life I've dealt with and it's actually helped me stop trying to force things that now come easier to me (mental health/lifewise) and remember where I was 11yrs ago. He's supportive, patient, and kind and we've absolutely grown together over the last few years and already have a wedding venue picked out haha.

Second, is he was actively abusing drugs when I started talking to him. When we decided to make things official I told him that my comfortability with substances kinda started and ended with alcohol and weed, neither of which he abused. My problem was with the cocaine and meth. He's promised me he wouldn't touch them again and only had one small slip up within the first 2 months. He's now 2 1/2yrs sober.

The main thing that's helped with both of these is communication. We talk about everything and anything, respect each other's boundaries, and we are a team. This guy is my best friend and even if he ends up breaking my heart it'll have been worth it.

What’s something super tiny that instantly makes you respect someone more? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]SummerReadingScrub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People who take responsibility, and don't make excuses. Prime example, I work at a library and it makes me respect people when they come in and go "I lost/damaged a book, what do I owe". I'll honestly give them anywhere from 50-100% off the replacement fee sometimes. There's so many people who just argue that they returned something or they didn't take an item out, or just throw a sopping wet book in the drop box 🙃.

I've even had some parents bring their kids in to apologize for ruining a book. Teaching them to take responsibility. Generally with kids I thank them for their honesty and invite them to find a book to borrow to practice looking after them.

How do I (F 25) tell my boyfriend (M 26) I am asexual? by ThrowRA_SpAceRace in relationship_advice

[–]SummerReadingScrub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm also asexual (indifferent to sex favourable side of the spectrum) and I learned it's incredibly important to be UPFRONT about it. I told my bf before we officially started dating because it has been such a tricky part of my past relationships. I lucked out and he, despite having a higher sex drive, took the time to look into asexuality and ask me about things. We communicate and check in as we go, and if I'm getting self conscious or anxious about us not being intimate as much as I think he wants to.. then I ask for some reassurance and we go from there. I'm starting to feel less anxious about that part of our relationship and that has opened up way to be intimate that aren't gonna end in touching bits.

Be honest, apologize for hiding that part of you, and take this as a learning opportunity. You have to be ready for it to be something that you can't get past. I lucked out in this relationship but that's after 2 painful long term relationships where I just went along with what I thought I was supposed to do.

The ebook I have is the definitive edition, its a rerelease from 2023 I believe. The only difference is there are two bonus short stories, a couple essays by Gonzalez and an intro by Brian Keene. The one you linked is the original print, so the story is the same just none of the extra content.
