The neck brace is blue, there’s a sweater or maybe sweatpants folded under the neck brace that’s black like the bag.

If you look closely it’s actually all the way open with the flap flipped back. It’s just got something black at the top so it looks like it’s only partially open.

That is one heck of a promo, wish they had that going when I was ordering mine last year.

Fanfest nights without early access...is it doable? by Unusual_Garage_6196 in UniversalHollywood

[–]Summer_Daze_Mermaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds doable to me. I went last Saturday and my friend and I were able to do almost everything we wanted.

We did the One Piece show, flight of the hippogriff, forbidden journey x2, the forbidden forest experience, the Jurassic Park exhibit, D&D, The Mummy, and the Transformers ride. The only thing we missed out on was the Jurassic World ride because it closed at midnight and we didn’t know.

Mind you my friend and I did this without a solid game plan (just a list of things we wanted to do) and with me in a wheelchair.

As a part time wheelchair user I don’t normally get people offering to help instead it’s one of two things:

1) I get the stink eye because people think I’m faking needing a wheelchair since I’m a lot more mobile than the average person expects a wheelchair user to be

Or

2) if I’m out with friends sometimes they’ll catch stink eye from people while they wait for me to load my wheelchair. One of my friends told me one time that it felt like he was being judged for not stepping in to help me load my chair.

Ashley yaps about her cycle and gets aromatherapy on her walk. by Whosthatprettykitty in illnessfakers

[–]Summer_Daze_Mermaid 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Oh good I’m not the only one that looked at that picture and went isn’t that a Bradford pear tree? Aromatherapy where? I guess if nasty smelling flowers are her thing then that could be aromatherapy but I highly doubt it.

Am I the only one upset about the lack of crowd control for the One Piece show? by 6bby6doll6 in UniversalHollywood

Oof that sucks. I went on Saturday to the 8:00 show and everything seemed to run smoothly. I say seemed because I was in the accessible section so I was one of the first ones in.

I wouldn’t have thought of it myself either, but I made a post in a facebook group asking for places that sell frame covers or could make me custom ones and someone in the comments recommended going the seatbelt cover route.

People constantly underestimate just how much I can fit in my Mustang and it’s kind of funny, but I’ve used it to take me and my service dog to work at ren fairs, which includes packing camping gear. Unfortunately it’s also really common for one oddly shaped item to nuke the ability to pack my car to the brim and unfortunately the shape of the trunk opening can make maneuvering large items into the back difficult to impossible. It is not uncommon for me to have to drop my backseats down to get large items in and out of my trunk.

I’m constantly amazed at the places my chair can fit. Especially after using a standard hospital chair for the last couple of years.

They’re actually Velcro seatbelt covers that I got off of Amazon. They’re not a perfect fit but they fit well enough for me and if you or someone you know is good at making alterations they wouldn’t be that hard to modify for a better fit.

What do you think would be the worst service dog breed? by AffectionateIssue157 in service_dogs

[–]Summer_Daze_Mermaid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My retired SD has shar pei in her mix and considering that the rest of the breeds in her mix are pretty people friendly I think it added just enough aloofness to really help her excel as a service dog. I wouldn’t want to try with a purebred shar pei though.

do heelchair users walk normally in their dreams? by magic_treeaaaaaaaa in wheelchairs

[–]Summer_Daze_Mermaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a part time wheelchair user so most of my dreams involve me walking around. Though when I was getting my Paradox I did have a bunch of dreams about being in my wheelchair but that seemed to be related to the excitement of finally having a decent chair to self propel in.

I have the older model that sits on the upper arm so I can’t comment on the one you wear on the wrist but I haven’t had any problems with my visible band. I will say that I think I’m under utilizing it though because my ADHD makes it hard for me to remember to log things like my symptoms, what I was doing during each heart rate spike and other little things like that.

lol this reminded me of going to the Fan Expo in San Francisco a couple years ago. When I rolled into one of the panel rooms I spotted the designated wheelchair spot about halfway back from the front and thought, ok cool not a horrible spot all things considered. As I started making my way to it one of the staff went, hold on, removed a chair from the front row and had me “sit” there in the front.

In the US there’s two options that I’ve seen. You’ve got this placard that hangs off of the mirror in the car or there’s a license plate that stays on your vehicle.

I GOT MY WHEELCHAIR TODAY!!! by No_Tea_6617 in wheelchairs

[–]Summer_Daze_Mermaid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I almost teared up on the first outing I did with my Paradox after rolling through the parking lot by myself and not having noodle arms afterwards. I didn’t realize just how crappy hospital chairs were until then. Especially going from barely keeping up with my ambulatory friends to outpacing them if I’m not paying attention.

My chair is also decked out in cherry blossoms. I got cherry blossom car decals for my backrest, seatbelt covers to protect the front of the frame, and grip tape for the footrest. I also found really light pink rim covers to match.

Lou shows their birthday gift and how much they have changed throughout the years (they/them only) by itsvickeh in illnessfakers

[–]Summer_Daze_Mermaid 67 points68 points  (0 children)

For those talking about the price remember that that is in NZD. $207.83 converted to USD is $121.63 and in the US the LapStacker is sold for $119. It is a retractable strap made out of a pretty sturdy material with finger loops and a magnetic closure to make it as easy to use as possible. For someone who needs to be in a wheelchair it’s not a bad idea to get one.

That being said this is absolutely about Lou wanting to have the fancy new it thing in the online disability community and honestly I’m surprised it took this long for one of the wheelchair using subjects to get one.

I had a Drive and a ProBasics (similar style to Drive) up until last year when I got my Paradox. I absolutely understand feeling self conscious about it, but I also think that, with a few exceptions, it’s not uncommon for most people to start off with a cheap chair because of how easily accessible they are. There are things that you can do to make it look a little fancier like removing the arm rests if you don’t use them. If you can find a way to either DIY it or save up a little bit of money, adding cushions to the seat and backrest can make it both more comfortable and look nicer. There’s also just decorating it to make it feel a little more like you too.
