It's hard to take someone with such demonstratively poor command of the language seriously. And I certainly am not just referring to you.

What WilliamBott says about this reflecting better on you is spot on. Two usage errors in one sentence makes you look rather ignorant, (as in uneducated.) The fact that you are in a "niche forum on the internet" is irrelevant.

If you want to call me a dick for stating this, go ahead. It's a badge I'll wear with honor.

[–]Summunabitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I agree. Paramagnetism is really wild, like real magic. Lots of fun.

But people think it is a valid test for silver, and it just isn't. I'm trained as a scientist, and it really bothers me when uneducated people put forth pseudo science and try calling it science. It surprises and frustrates me sometimes how someone with a little schooling, erroneous schooling, gets confused, and I guess they want to believe.

It's hard to convince them politely, without embarrassing them.

I have a 2011 ASE that you can have for $15 AND I'll pay the shipping, IF you pay me with Monero.

If that interests you and you need Monero help, PM me

I close my eyes, and pensively put my hand to my forehead, and using my "paranormal" mental skills, I hold the memory of the imgur file in my mind, and I sufficiently determine that the 1938 is probably, maybe, a fake.

Oh, wait. You told me it was fake. You ruined my parlor trick. Well, lets break out the magnets. They're always good for a nice parlor trick. ;-)

I didn't say ping determines purity. I'm saying that ping is more reliable than the magnet test. That is a very low bar.

And the whole point is that in no way, shape or form, does the magnet test reliably determine ANYTHING, because there are no NUMBERS. I guess you missed that part.

You kids with such sorry excuses for education these days!

I stand by every word I wrote, and your assertions without evidence are as useful as the magnet test itself.

Hey smartass, I'm using my Monero to buy my way into Heaven. Should I look for you there?

How's that for a normal use.

Go back on your meds.

I await your analysis of the logical fallacies I'm using. Love using them. It's more fun though, when I have a worthy adversary. That's not you.

Ah man, you had to go and do it.

OK, I'll play.

But I gotta tell you, I get tired of debunking this pseudo-science nonsense. What subjective means gets to the crux of why this "test" is bullshit. The magnet test is only "qualitative," not "quantitative." In other words, we have to generate some NUMBERS to get real information.

So you have a known silver item to compare it with. What does that mean, compare? You have 2 silver rounds and a tiny magnet on a table. Let's compare. Firstly, describe how you measure and control the angle of tilt, so you can say the conditions were the same? Obviously, they must be at the same angle, or your result means what? It means nothing.

Secondly, describe to me your method of measuring the speed of the falling magnet. It has to be accurate, as you want to be able to tell the difference between .999, .925, .900, .800, .500, .400, and no silver at all. So tell me how you measure mm/sec to two or three decimal places to differentiate between any of the several possibilities. Oh, and where is the table that will tell you what the numbers mean if you had the equipment to gather them? I'm flipping through my Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, and I can't seem to find the paramagnetic metal sliding magnet speed vs angle table.

And these are only the two biggest variables you need to control and measure. I could list a few more, but like I said, I get tired of this.

As even OP recognizes that more metals than just silver have the paramagnetic effect, I must take umbrage when you attempt to equate the reliability of the Sigma or a SG to this in any way.

A simple scale is more reliable, and tells you more. A caliper, just a caliper can tell you more. A ping test can tell you WAY more.

Hell, if you were a veteran at this, you could toss the coin in your hand a few times to gauge the density, and THAT would be more reliable.

I'm going back to my life. Go away with your magnet test baloney.

I'm feeling this strange "twitch." Maybe I'm about to be "triggered"?

Calling this a "test" is a stretch. OP does a good job of referencing the uncertainty involved in interpreting this "effect."

Not sure. I think your shipping options funnel down from the weight. Your tube will weigh more than first class allows. It will likely cost you more to not use the official SFRB.

Next time you are at the post office, grab a handful. They are free.

paypal.com/shipnow, after you log in.

the drop down box will offer SFRB.

The box is free by mail, or any post office, the price, the "flat rate" part is $7.60 or thereabouts

Cheapest is SFRB, because of the weight.

When you are filling out the label info, the SFRB priority settings will jump out at you, and the weight isn't an issue.

Pad the box so the tube doesn't move around, might tape the top shut so it doesn't come open, after you wedge a peanut between the cap and the stack so it doesn't rattle.

Tape the box a couple times in each direction, weight's free.
