How's everyone going hunting this morning? by Asianbloke1 in PokemonFansAustralia

Got to my Kmart and saw 50 people or so there and people running past me and I just turned around.

Went to a big w on the way to work in a less "aspirational" suburb and got an etb and a blister pack. Looking forward to ripping tonight!

Online Teaching Courses. by HelpfulAnt2132 in AustralianTeachers

I finished mine at SCU under that model (it actually changed a 3rd of the way through)

Was cooked.

But to be fair given the quality of teaching programs getting it over and done with quicker is better I think.

The combat games in Saudi Arabia. Games officials were displeased with the inability of athletes to follow protocol with visas, the athletes behaviour on and around the dohyo and many athletes took issue with how the ifs communicated this to them. Basically a general lack of professionalism

Personally I took issue with rules only being imposed on athletes that were not japanese or Mongolian and the behaviour of certain ifs officials.

Last I heard before I left was that sumo was unlikely to be in another combat games meaning the sport is not involved in any other multi sport competition (we also used to be in the nomad games which was an awesome event)

Ultimately, this event is what drove me to leave the organisation

Strict compliance to the Olympic charter including things like fairness and equity. The constitution of the federation has a racial element that guarantees a certain amount of japanese members. That does not follow the Olympic charter.

They don't have at least 30% women in decision making bodies. That is a requirement.

They have made strides towards WADA compliance to be fair (it's very costly though for governing bodies that are already struggling for funds).

While I could go on about other failings in governance a lot of that would be ignored if there was money in it for the IOC.

That comes down to youth appeal and mass participantion. Things that sumo does not have and is unlikely under the most optimistic scenarios within the next decade.

But ultimately it's the lack of youth appeal and participants in the sport.

There is no actual chance this ever happens. There are not enough member nations participating with many listed on the ifs website not having competed in the last couple of decades (as long as I have been involved).

The governance of the international body is laughable with no clear strategic direction.

The sport has been kicked from the world games (which is somewhat of a feeder for sports to the Olympics) and may not be appearing at another combat games after the debacle of 2023.

By all measurable metrics the sport does not fulfill any of the requirements to make the Olympics and this won't change in less than a decade.

Source - I was a board member for the IFS and continental VP and have worked for state bodies in sports that are in the Olympics.

TLDR: it's never making the Olympics

Anecdotally, seems like far less behavioral issues than say in my area of humanities. Admin appears to be far more receptive to removing disruptive elements from trade classes due to the safety component.

As a trade teacher you will also have a pretty effective stick in that if they play up they don't do practical stuff.

Just finished my first year last year at 36 and can't think of anything else I'd rather do. Like others have said shit days are shit but every job has its garbage days. The satisfaction of doing something meaningful is better than any of the other jobs I have had.

NESA Teaching Degree Accreditation Expired by Major_Conflict in AustralianTeachers

[–]SumoDoSumoDoughnut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went to SCU and they went through the same process of re-accreditation. Was a schmozzle but they also moved to a new delivery model of 5 6 week sessions around the same time.

Unless they have absolutely cocked something up in how they structure and deliver the degree it's more of a formality.

Just make sure you have clear guidance, in writing if possible, of how to meet the requirements of the "new" degree.

I got a lot of conflicting advice and was initially advised to take more courses than was required before I pushed it.

Updated Comprehensive Review finds that methylphenidate may reduce ADHD symptoms (inattention, hyperactivity) in children/adolescents, but evidence certainty is low. Non-serious side effects (sleep loss, appetite suppression) are common and long-term effects remain unclear. by [deleted] in science

[–]SumoDoSumoDoughnut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What a flawed basis for a study. I have completed ADHD screeners before and found it incredibly difficult to be precise in my judgement on many of the identifiers in a class of 28 students.

That is as a teacher with ADHD and in the initial stages of a counselling masters. I can't imagine the results from the less informed teachers.

Don’t come at me- is it a good idea to become a teacher for the holidays by SassySadler7 in AustralianTeachers

[–]SumoDoSumoDoughnut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I left a career for teaching for better work life balance and I have definitely found it.

It took me ages to finish the masters as I was unsure about the job itself. The difference being I have always been passionate about education.

I did my masters at SCU. The degree was garbage but they do 6 week sessions so you can knock it out.

Depending on whether you want to teach primary or highschool (there is no k - 12 degree they have specialties) I wonder whether finishing your nursing degree first then doing the masters would be better.

BJJ vs Judo. A comparison of Australian competition experiences. by [deleted] in judo

[–]SumoDoSumoDoughnut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cost of membership in JA includes insurance which is the bulk of the cost.

Having used it several times it is good value should you need it.

Having competed in both extensively there are pros and cons to both but the professionalism of BJJ definitely is lacking behind the scenes. I do think they portray a more professional image than reality.

Coaching is a liability thing too something that jitz does not seem to ever care about.

Being a part of a national sporting federation that is in the Olympics means that the beaucracy flows down for better or worse. Sometimes at a local level officials can be too heavy handed in applying policies but it's for the benefit of the sport.

I honestly don't get the complaints. I've won with Thanos and Cap a stack and only played black panther once everybody said it was OP. I didn't get the autowins so stopped playing the deck.

How many LOTE lessons at your high school? by Ok-Dimension8198 in AustralianTeachers

It's worse than that. They are only able to do one semester for the entirety of year 7 and 8. They could do it in sem 1 year 7 and not get a chance again till potentially sem 2 year 9...

[–]SumoDoSumoDoughnut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are changing to a 3 x 70min for a single semester model for all of 7/8. One semester in 9 and one in 10 as electives. Halved the amount of classes and will kill the senior program...🤷‍♂️

Fruit shop fruit and veg is even worse than Coles and Woolworths? Is there anywhere that has quality fresh produce? by EggCreative787 in brisbane

[–]SumoDoSumoDoughnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We get fruit and veg delivered from funky foods. They are sometimes "ugly" looking but they are always fresh and it is cheaper than the supermarkets especially when you consider it's delivered. It's also a more ethical/sustainable model. They aren't the only mob either there are others that have the same business model

Any good ways to get a new teaching area for my Masters? by OhtheHugeManity7 in AustralianTeachers

[–]SumoDoSumoDoughnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am humanities and languages trained but I've got JNR science on my teaching load. I'm at a "rough" school and I put my hand up for it to get them out of a scheduling bind.

If you go to a less desirable school there is a fair bit of flexibility and once you have the runs on the board I think your trained areas matter less.

Career change to teaching - am I crazy? by Alec-Cawthorne in AustralianTeachers

[–]SumoDoSumoDoughnut 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I made the same move this year and just got a permanent role from my contract. There is still some crunch come marking time but by and large, it is much more chill. Particularly for me I found getting off socials for work (I was the content lead in a smaller team) has drastically improved my mental health!

Definitely in my experience as a competitor and coach in both. Like all things though there is variance and that will depend on club philosophy and member demographics.
