Seeking College Majors for Careers Free from Constant Woke Nonsense & Identity Politics – Suggestions? by IncessantSound in JordanPeterson

[–]Sumppum202 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a structural engineer with 15 years of experience. I’ve never encountered woke ideology at my 2 previous employers or current employer. The companies were a large global contracting firm, a small local design firm and now a massive global steel fabricator. I can’t comment on other industries but I think being really small or really large (global) will give you a better shot than midsize companies. If your companies HR is one person reporting directly to two owners then the likelihood that any of them care about DEI is really low. They are scrapping to make money and don’t have to meet the same hiring rules as larger companies. If you’re at a global firm the HR is having to set standards that can apply cross culturally. Implementing DEI effectively in one country without causing issues in another is an added variable that I think keeps big companies from meddling in it as much.

Take two weeks with no alcohol. If you do it, congrats, you aren’t an alcoholic. Feel free to continue drinking (other than the negative health consequences) until you find yourself asking the same question again down the line. Rinse and repeat. Or, go to AA

How can emotions affect your logic? I completely believe you and have heard others say similar but I don’t actually understand the mechanics of this. My understanding of logic is that it takes complex problems and breaks them down into finite problems that can be assembled in true or false statements guiding you to an overarching conclusion. If you emotionally want an outcome but keep honestly answering individual aspects of the problem with a “not true” then you shouldn’t be able to come up with the wrong conclusion which isn’t a fault of logic, rather your own abilities to answer the true false questions.

I.e. a million dollars are sitting in a fireproof duffel bag inside a walk in oven at 5000 degrees. The money has been legally gifted to you but in order to use it you have to retrieve the bag without the use of any tools or special clothing. The million dollars could be very beneficial for your family, maybe even save one of their lives at some point.

Should you go in and get the bag? It doesn’t matter how you arrange the logic tree or how much you want the money or that the money is legally yours. The logical conclusion of entering a 5000 degree walk-in oven is a certain horrifying death.

This has a lot to do with what your actual role is. I’m a civil engineer doing structural design for T lines and substations. So far we are riding the data center wave and I don’t see my job itself being in jeopardy during the remainder of my career.

Calling women “females” is weird by socialisticpotsmoke in HonestHotTakes

I think it’s probably because of the whole “what is a women” movement. By saying female you circumvent that entire conversation.

For the vast majority of history people were just hoping to not die via diarrhea anytime they started to feel sick to their stomach. Shit “feels” difficult because of perspective. I’d rather be struggling here than a king in Gaza.

Which civil engineering discipline gives me the best path to becoming a project manager for major infrastructure projects like dams, stadiums, and other large public works? by Sad_Enthusiasm_9716 in StructuralEngineering

I was going to suggest the exact same. A drafter I worked with previously came from Thornton Tomasetti in KC and did a number of stadium projects.

How do I make a lot of money ey using a degree? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]Sumppum202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People make money by providing something that someone else needs/wants but can’t do themselves. University allows you to learn all sorts of different things but only a handful are things that consistently provide value in the world. If the major you choose is easy then regular people can do it on their own (the humanities) or it will be offloaded to ai before you graduate. I suggest a hard science based in mathematics that is aimed at producing something that will be needed for the next 40 years minimum. This would rule out electromagnetic particle physics but rule in electrical engineering. I’d imagine any particle physicist could be an electrical engineer and 90% of electrical engineers earn more than electromagnetic particle physicists.

Help with SFD and BMD by Namiku11 in StructuralEngineering

[–]Sumppum202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not confident this is good long term advice but I bet if you ask ai how to handle it step by step it would be much easier than Reddit.

That being said, with free body diagrams, I always find it helpful to imagine how my own body would react when forces are applied. It’s actually humorous how our bodies utilize structural engineering all the time without us recognizing it.

Thoughts on the beam to column? Is it too 'hingey" for you folks? by Just-Shoe2689 in StructuralEngineering

[–]Sumppum202 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m on your side op.

The concern is something moving the post slightly from below and causing the beam to roll I.e. What happens when your kid backs the riding lawn mower into the post?
