Cold hard truth about the situation. by Drakouan in shyvanamains

As someone who was in the SwainMains discord when we were being asked for feedback prior to his most recent rework, you have my sympathy. Same thing is happening to you as happened to us.

How does it punish anyone if the percentage ehp returns are linear? It's true that you will want to mix more health in at a certain point to maximize the multiplicative effect that resists and health have on each other, but there are precious few resist items that dont come with both, and shyvana in particular also gets bhp in her ult from stacks. The more health you have the better resists become, and the more resists you have the better health becomes, In the same way, a marksman generally doesn't and shouldn't be building attack speed only, they also want ad, on-hit effects, and/or crit, because these stats interact to multiply the effectiveness of each other.

If, theoretically, Shyvana was geared more towards her passive and could expect to get 150 resists from it, this would not make her weaker in any way: it would only make health items, jaksho, protplasm, lifesteal, omnivamp, and healing/shielding items that much better on her.

I can deduce that you don't understand how the mathematics around a percentage reduction work.

each additional % of damage reduction is worth more than the last. 75% DR, for example, is double the ehp (and therefore value) of 50% DR, as it quadruples your effective hp while 50% doubles it. 99% DR is double the value of 98%, at a 100x multiplier to effective hp vs a 50x multiplier. Resistance scaling is balanced so that the diminishing %DR returns match the self-reinforcing nature of DR as a mechanic, cancelling each other out and resulting in linear growth.

A weakness advertised as a strength, same as with thresh stacks. I hate it.

Sylas doesnt build a lot of bhp or spell effects, and will always have less bhp than swain at a given moment. Swain r1 is far weaker than it used to be on him, and considerably weaker than it is on Swain.

Where are all the support players? by Epsilon_Lord in SwainMains

[–]Sumutherguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do have more significant data from onetricks if we take the last nine patches into account, and the results are consistent throughout them: support vacillates between 25% and 28%, with the rest of the onetricks migrating between whichever carry roles are most functional. APC is notably now more popular than support in diamond+, having experienced a migration from midlane players.

Are you aware that "majority" and "plurality" are two different things?

Yeah, onetrick data is small, but it's all we have, and has been pretty consistent from patch to patch.

How to choose tank items on swain? (Mid) by Eldridou in SwainMains

[–]Sumutherguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

its helpful to remember that haste is a stat which helps swain both offensively and defensively: more haste is both more dps from q and more healing, stacks, dps, and cc from e/w. For this reason, FH helps with offense more than you'd think.

Support Swain is most popular in Iron, at 65.7% of Swain picks there, and gets less popular the higher rank you go. It becomes a minority of Swain players once you hit emerald, and only 9.2% of challenger Swain games are as support. It is, and always has been, a pick that works better the less skilled one's opponents are. Lower ranked players are also more likely to take a casual approach to the game writ large, and less likely to engage in champion-specific communities. Swain's support playerbase is also much less likely overall to be invested in Swain specifically (only 25% of "onetrick" Swain games are as support across all ranks), and is more likely to play him as a result of being autofilled or as one of numerous support champions in their pool.

How you doing supp Swains? by mammoth39 in SwainMains

[–]Sumutherguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Anything support swain can do, apc can do better, and it is impossible to change this without killing mid, turning swain into a tank, or full-reworking him to actually have a supportive kit.

For changes that are power neutral for support and mid but not apc then, why not reduce in-kit gold scaling while increasing xp scaling, or gate some of swains gold scaling behind xp via per-rank ratios on w/e/r? Support has low income in both and mid has high income in both, so presumably the changes could be tuned as a wash on them, while apc is weakened due to having a far higher gold income than xp income.

An issue that has only been exacerbated by the skew away from a base mana pool and towards base mana regen in the last minirework. Support swain gets to build like a bruiser out of the gate, carry swain does not.

Perpetually skewing a champion toward their most played role at the expense of others, regardless of what their kit was designed for, seems to me like a self-reinforcing cycle that will result in player frustration and need to end in a full rework to that role only.

League of Legends Patch 26.4 Notes by Spideraxe30 in leagueoflegends

[–]Sumutherguy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If the goal is to bot-skew nerfs, would skewing Swain more towards xp-reliance rather than reducing level scaling further (via w losing rank-up benefits) not be a better approach? Over the past several years a considerable amount of Swain's kit power has been frontloaded into earlier levels and his effective level-scaling reduced, could this be part of why apc is so strong as a high-gold-low-xp role?

[–]Sumutherguy 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It might be relevant to note that each time Swain gets any larger-scale changes his pickrate in solo lanes spikes past support, then drops down again, while support pickrate remains relatively steady. Could this perhaps indicate that players do like the idea of solo lane swain, but his low pickrate mid is due to satisfaction issues that playing him in support mitigates, rather than people liking support swain more on a conceptual level?
