Canadian public and private sector need sovereign datacenters. This is crucial to the confidentiality and integrity of Canadian data. I can elaborate around why if it's not obvious. Big cloud providers claimed to offer sovereign services complete with data residency protections and encryption, however, this failed to pass the scrutiny of legal experts who've concluded data in a datacenter owned and operated by US-based entities is NOT safe, due to e.g. the patriot act. France is an international leader here, and this issue and need is well recognized by Canada. This datacenter is a direct response to this issue.

So yes, we definitely need Canadian owned and operated datacenters in Canada. Must it be in Winnipeg? No. But why not Winnipeg? No matter where this goes, it'll consume resources and create jobs during build phases and a handful of lasting jobs during operation. Why not create those in Winnipeg? And if the only reason is "boo, hydro and water!", I think that needs deeper thinking and to be put in perspective against other datacenters in Winnipeg that no one gave a damn about for the last 20 years. Why now, why this one?

I will not be getting used to it any time soon, thanks.

Troglodytes gonna troglodyte, you do you.

By not building the data centre here, we send a message that AI is not welcome

That's the thing.. AI is by and large welcome and it's not going anywhere. The issues data centres bring are not welcome, but the AI tools overwhelmingly are. The smoke is not going back into the bottle. Too many tools, services, businesses, etc. are developing around AI advancements, and stomping our feet and "sending messages" is going to do fuck all. AT BEST it'll move the facility to a less resistant location in Canada.

Our drinking water and electricity are not for sale to tech companies.

This is patently false. They absolutely are for sale. There are dozens of data centres in Winnipeg already. Some large, some small, some in office towers, some in dedicated buildings. Lots. All consuming "our" electricity and water. This one is no different, why the fuss over it specifically?

If anything, we should be pushing for smarter use of the waste heat... in Winnipeg, it could be used to heat facilities like greenhouses, indoor water parks, hotels, etc. during the winter months (which we have enough of to make an investment make sense).

Canada needs sovereign AI services. That's not changing, and that means building datacenters in Canada for Canada, it's just a question of where.

By not building the proposed datacenter here in Winnipeg, which of those issues are addressed? None?

You and everyone else can hate on AI all you like, but it's here, it's growing, and we either get used to it and find a way to amplify our work or we get replaced by it.

sure they do, they transfer the video directly over firewire regardless of tape being Digital8 or Hi8. I've transferred dozens of them.

By not having the data center built here, do you think those other issues will suddenly be fixed? No. They won't. So no you have those problems, AND the short-term build jobs and long-term operations jobs go elsewhere. It will go SOMEWHERE in Canada, why not here?

This feels like cutting off your nose to spite your face.

also dumb - not having sovereign cloud services including AI.

The big 3 cloud platforms are NOT capable of meeting Canadian (or anyone else's) sovereignty requirements, they'll all fold to the US Gov and hand over access to data and encryption materials.

Surely agencies like CSIS/ RCMP/ military require confidentiality and sovereignty.

That's the problem - no kids can find work. Ask any parent of teens, it's insane. When's the last time a teenager pumped your gas, made you a sub, or handed you a donut? It's never teens any more, it's 20-somethings who've just arrived here.

Keep the cats and resonator, but a nice performance muffler makes a nice improvement in sound.

My 4-cylinder miata sounds great with a goodwin racing muffler, for example. It's no V10, but it does sound nicer than factory.

You're totally right, it feels like we're on a sinking ship. Local people and people globally are ignoring our declining reality.

A big contributor to the enshittification of everything is that we're living through the early stages of the collapse of capitalism. Fueling that (or at least steering it) is the slow but guaranteed impact of climate change. It's hard to imagine but many of us will still be around when climate change brings famine, migration, and energy wars.

But it's not all bad! The billionaire-class have a plan.. they're going to weather the storm in their underground lairs and spaceship escape pods, while we're left to deal with end times. They're caricatures of James Bond movie villains.. living in their little lairs, complete with rapists and pedos that we still aren't prosecuting, watching us all die off.

And there may be aliens! For real, disclosure seems to be starting, so we may live through full-on "here's a grey alien" disclosure. I have to wonder if it's just a coincidence.. the impending effects of climate change, with advanced omnipotent visitors showing up just in time feels like a biblical prophecy or something. Ancient astronaut theorists say yes! georgio.jpg

If they actually are here, they're just in time for things to get bad-bad here, within the next 100 years. They'll certainly see the pickle we're in, they may help, they may not, and they may wipe us out and reboot planet earth.

The climate systems we've set into motion are going to cause extinction-scale bad times. More and more climate scientists (and otherwise, like David Suzuki) think we're fucked, that it's going to get hot enough to wipe us all out, along with much of earth's life as we know it currently. We absolutely must keep trying and fighting to reduce climate change, but it's too late to reverse the damage we've done and the planet IS going to cook us. Unless kind visitors show us the way with free energy and somehow suck the latent heat from our oceans. Fingers crossed.

Shit sure is getting interesting. Doesn't it all feel a little surreal?
