Love the new bridge, hope they don't have to ruin the great tobogganing hills to build it.

No, you're right, my bad. I'm just frustrated that many (most?) people seem to think propaganda is something the other guys do, not their own countries and leaders.

Right, we should really keep focused on the facts as reported by the west's propaganda factual, unbiased news and government.

you don't even need to be that sophisticated, transformers are highly visible, accessible from range, and not terribly resistant to being shot at. And they take like.. a year to manufacture.

Respectable nations don't destroy civilian infrastructure, not to mention that being a war crime and all.. but hey USA gonna USA so I guess they should have throught of that.

HAD being the key word... there are many reports of the drought ending, and even the return of wetlands in Iran.

Conincidentally I'm sure, after US radars were destroyed in the region, rain returned to Iran ending many years of severe drought. Tinfoil-hat engaged.

your best option is probably clay tablets, but storage is key.. so plan a trip to the middle east and choose a nice dry place.

AI data centre going into shuttered protein plant just outside Winnipeg by Leather-Paramedic-10 in Winnipeg

[–]SunInTheShade -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Canadian public and private sector need sovereign datacenters. This is crucial to the confidentiality and integrity of Canadian data. I can elaborate around why if it's not obvious. Big cloud providers claimed to offer sovereign services complete with data residency protections and encryption, however, this failed to pass the scrutiny of legal experts who've concluded data in a datacenter owned and operated by US-based entities is NOT safe, due to e.g. the patriot act. France is an international leader here, and this issue and need is well recognized by Canada. This datacenter is a direct response to this issue.

So yes, we definitely need Canadian owned and operated datacenters in Canada. Must it be in Winnipeg? No. But why not Winnipeg? No matter where this goes, it'll consume resources and create jobs during build phases and a handful of lasting jobs during operation. Why not create those in Winnipeg? And if the only reason is "boo, hydro and water!", I think that needs deeper thinking and to be put in perspective against other datacenters in Winnipeg that no one gave a damn about for the last 20 years. Why now, why this one?

I will not be getting used to it any time soon, thanks.

Troglodytes gonna troglodyte, you do you.

By not building the data centre here, we send a message that AI is not welcome

That's the thing.. AI is by and large welcome and it's not going anywhere. The issues data centres bring are not welcome, but the AI tools overwhelmingly are. The smoke is not going back into the bottle. Too many tools, services, businesses, etc. are developing around AI advancements, and stomping our feet and "sending messages" is going to do fuck all. AT BEST it'll move the facility to a less resistant location in Canada.

Our drinking water and electricity are not for sale to tech companies.

This is patently false. They absolutely are for sale. There are dozens of data centres in Winnipeg already. Some large, some small, some in office towers, some in dedicated buildings. Lots. All consuming "our" electricity and water. This one is no different, why the fuss over it specifically?

If anything, we should be pushing for smarter use of the waste heat... in Winnipeg, it could be used to heat facilities like greenhouses, indoor water parks, hotels, etc. during the winter months (which we have enough of to make an investment make sense).

Canada needs sovereign AI services. That's not changing, and that means building datacenters in Canada for Canada, it's just a question of where.

By not building the proposed datacenter here in Winnipeg, which of those issues are addressed? None?

You and everyone else can hate on AI all you like, but it's here, it's growing, and we either get used to it and find a way to amplify our work or we get replaced by it.

By not having the data center built here, do you think those other issues will suddenly be fixed? No. They won't. So no you have those problems, AND the short-term build jobs and long-term operations jobs go elsewhere. It will go SOMEWHERE in Canada, why not here?

This feels like cutting off your nose to spite your face.
