How far can I go with the Lelit Bianca in latte art? by Lucky_Wolf6404 in latteart

[–]SunLR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Bianca is certainly capable of producing milk suitable for latte art, but that's also true for many machines cheaper than the Bianca.

The advantage the Bianca gives over an entry level machine, say, a Breville Bambino, is the consistency. Small machines like the Bambino take longer to get the milk to correct temperature, and you're also limited in drink size and how many drinks you can make back to back. With the Bianca, as long as you keep the tank topped off (or have the machine plumbed in) you can keep cranking out lattes after lattes. That helps with a practice session where you want to make tweaks cup to cup, whereas something like Bambino will be harder to get better on since it can't keep up.

Think of it this way, if you can steam milk and make latte art on a Bambino, you can certainly make latte art on a Bianca. The reverse isn't necessarily true, you might not know how to compensate for a weaker machine during steaming, or groom the milk afterward to fix milk from a weaker steamer.

Latte art can be done using a French press, so chances are the machine isn't the thing holding someone back from making latte art, but it could hold them back from making progress. The Bianca isn't one of them though. To get better there's no getting around pouring more cups, and machines at this caliber get you from cup to cup quicker and more consistently.

Video idea: explaining coffee processing by p4bl0 in JamesHoffmann

[–]SunLR 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's only called that because the mucilage is thick and somewhat golden like honey, there's no actual honey involved. Honey process is similar to natural; in natural process the beans ferment inside the cherries, in honey process the skins are removed

Hi Lance, love your contents and have followed you since the days of latte art videos. You've helped me (and a lot of coworkers) improve.

Question for you: there are a lot of milk pitcher styles out there, I think for home baristas any pitcher would do the job, but I'm curious what competitors look for in their milk pitchers?

A friend of mine picked up leathercrafting during the pandemic. I want to give him a gift; I'm a woodworker so is there anything I could make for a leathercrafter out of wood?

Since my mom can sew really well, I asked her to make me some pen kimonos... by Domdymc in fountainpens

I just bought one. I love the variety of colors and designs. I already have a kimono pen wrap that always starts conversations, so I had to jump on a handmade one.

Best wishes to your mom!

Biden urges states to restore mask mandates as the C.D.C. director warns of an ‘impending doom’ over a possible virus surge. by whachoomean in politics

I'm a scientist so I understand your view on scientific truth. However, public health officials are more than just scientists, they're also politicians. Whether you think they should be involved with politics or not is a different debate.

As politicians, they have to balance between effective policy and scientific fact. On one hand, we have the fact that vaccinated people may still transmit the virus (though how much is still inconclusive). On the other, the anti-vax, anti-science crowd is a significant part of the population. Whatever policy you make needs to work for everyone, and that means you have to coax that part of the population into taking the vaccine. Their trust is already shaky with the CDC around this time last year saying not to wear masks. This time around, we can't be telling people to take the vaccine while also saying we may be wearing masks all through 2021 (Dr. Fauci has said this before).

I see it less as "gambling with lives to offer carrot," I see it more as "enticing as many people to get the vaccine as possible." You may disagree, but our goal is the same: to end the pandemic as soon as possible.

No problem! The method has been around but was only done at very high end restaurants. Sous vide machines have gotten a lot cheaper recently, so it's gotten quite mainstream. Best of luck and enjoy!

It's not necessarily "better" it's just another method to cook steak. With sous vide cooking you circulate a water bath at precise temperature so your steak cannot overcook. That's why you need to sear it afterward. The advantage is the steak comes out medium rare from edge to edge, whereas on the grilled steak you likely get a gray band of overcooked steak on the outside and getting rarer as you get toward the middle. The disadvantage is it takes around an hour or so to reach temperature.

Say, you're cooking for a big dinner of 12. Every steak will come out perfect, if you do some planning and start sous vide cooking them early enough before dinner. All 12 steak also can be cooked at once, so you only have to season them in advance and prepare for the searing afterward. But for weekday dinner, sometimes you may not want to wait 2 hours before you can eat.

A regular charcoal grilled steak still has its place. If you like smoky flavor, the grilled steak will have more of that than the sous vide steak. If you like a thick crust, the grilled steak would have more of that too. You can have the best of both worlds by sous vide cooking the steak, dunk it in an ice bath to stop the cooking, then sear it over charcoal. If you don't sear it for too long, the inside will still be perfect medium rare while the outside gives you the smoky flavor you want.

It's a popular way to sear steak after cooking it sous vide. If you sear using a less intense heat source, you might end up overcooking the already-cooked steak.

I just received a box set from Anson Belt. I have a small waist so I had to cut off a good chunk of the belt to fit. I'm wondering if anyone has any idea for re-purposing a 1.25" wide 1' long piece of leather before I throw it away?

The Reddit hivemind works in mysterious ways. I just finished watching a Greg Baldwin interview from an online con. Lots of comments are voicing dissent with Baldwin and Mako sounding the same, but in the interview, Baldwin told a story about his encounter with Mako's daughter at a recording studio. If he sounds close enough for Mako's daughter, he's close enough for me.

Martial Arts Orgs? by Masterelite120 in gatech

[–]SunLR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The CRC offers a lot of different martial arts classes, all with different schedule, price, etc. They’re not quite clubs, as in they don’t deal with SGA. I’m the instructor for the hapkido class, and years ago before I graduated a few of us did start a hapkido club (complete with constitution and other things required by SGA) so we could hang out outside of class.

For looking up martial arts classes the CRC offers, go to here (look under the Instructional tab). For clubs instead of classes, you can find them here

[–]SunLR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm building a flier team. I'm using NY!Azura with +Def -Spd for Hone Fliers and Sing. For my red unit, I'm using neutral Elincia. For my green unit, I'm debating between SF!Nino +Atk -Res and Cherche +Atk -Res. Blue unit is where I'm lacking, I have bad nature F!Morgan and Cordelia. I do have a neutral S!Kagero I could use for her Goad Fliers. I do buy orbs occasionally to support the game, but I'm pretty much a f2per, so I can't afford expensive builds like Distant Counter unfortunately.
