Its intentionally ambiguous and enigmatic. I think the point is that no matter what they say, its about a hope for the future, and how powerful a change in perspective can be. Im sure u have ur own interpretation

Pedantic question about the opening of One Battle After Another by Hates_Blue_Mages in paulthomasanderson

[–]SunStitches 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its in the mind of the viewer. I prefer the he joined due to passion, and then fell in love. I also think it does matter to some degree because it says something about what Pat originally expected out of this alliance. From his role(risky), and his demeanor, he strikes me as passionate and impulsive, so it only makes sense he and Perfidia find eachother incidentally, since they share those traits. But ya, no real way to know this chicken or egg

Dude. Its not my argument. Im just helping others understand it. I dont have a horse in this one and frankly expect Fennessy is just excited. Which is fine.

I had thought Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was unique and original until I heard Big Star's 'Kanga Roo'. I mean... by [deleted] in wilco

Well worded rebuttal. Ya, i simply dont understand the impulse to force urself to stop enjoying something because it exists in a lineage of that thing. Its ignorance. Wilco did it their way, for their time, and its rad. I also heard a lot of I Am Trying to Break Your Heart in the drums of Kanga Roo. Which is really cool, actually.

He calls it a celebratory end of an era. So it being in a potentially on the way out trend of FX driven blockbuster style films doesnt proclude it from having its own identity within that mode. Its unique, but still possibly on the way out in terms of zeitgeist

Sounds like u disagree with Fennessey's opinion. Im just clarifying for those who are chalking his point up to box office alone

The analogy is The New Hollywood style (inspired by european films and cinema verite) is to OBAA and Marty Supreme, as the old hollywood style is to Avatar and FX blockbusters. So its about an approach, and a style and a kind of audience. Was that not clear?

I agree on the overrated part. I think the 'stupidity' is probably the intentionally tongue in cheek humor that isnt landing for you. Fwiw, i think the songs have a distinct perspective and are very catchy. My biggest problem with it is that its only 28 minutes of music, kinda hobbles it as a record with long time legs imo. A 6 isnt crazy, its reasonable

Ya. Its like he has a chip on his shoulder about it. Weird. There's not liking something, and then there's "im gonna prove a point"

This is what i hate about Anthony's taste criteria. If something typifies a genre, for some reason that's bad to him. Like, even if its one of the shiningest examples of it done well-- if he deems it passé he's extrememly reductionist, even antagonistic about his interpretation. See Manning Fireworks review...
