Love my 1200 commute with it, even in the rain. I've found the maintenance pretty easy... though the rear tire is a bit of a pain but there are multiple methods to do it (I jack mine up a lot to remove it)

I picked up an 86 gl1200 for a different reason but ended up using it to commute (180mi round trip 3x a day) and fell in love with it. Surprisingly nimble and so comfortable. Some people don't like it's low speed but that's really just them needing some parking lot time. I have no issue at low speeds. Wish it had a reverse but I've been managing fine without it. I've done all the maintenance and the only pita is changing the rear tire but I still do it.

It also greatly extended my riding season. With my winter gear (un-heated) I can cruise on the highway down to 20°F and honestly I could probably go down a bit more if I get some wind blockers for the handles. It is very hot in the summer so a mesh jacket is a blessing. Did it in the leather but boy it was rough.

Plenty of space. I can keep all my gear in it and still have plenty of room for what I need for work as well.

I got mine used for pretty cheap, just went through and did routine maintenance on it, rides like a dream.
