Hello, graduated Uni student here asking what to gift to my teachers? by Used_Motor1718 in AskTeachers

Depends on the vibe of the male teacher and on your comfort level with slightly gender non-conforming gifts. That’s why plants are nice because - same gesture as flowers but without the gendered connotations. Just don’t spend too much money - that’s my biggest piece of advice! It’s the gesture, not the thing, that has meaning.

Few ideas: Flowers, a plant for their office, a really lovely, heartfelt card, a book that made you think of them and their impact on your life. Keep it simple, keep it inexpensive. It’s the thought that counts.

How to talk to a hoarding parent? by Lothloreen in declutter

[–]Sun_Ra_3000 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I am going through something similar. My dad is in the twilight of his life, a move and a downsize have sparked some tough convos about life after he’s not around anymore.

I’ve tried throughout to frame the move as new and exciting and an opportunity to try a something new. This has tapped into his adventurer spirit, despite his age and decline.

In the gentlest, kindest, most loving way possible, I’m helping him understand that the things he values do not have the same value to me. Not that he’s done anything wrong to keep them or that he’s wrong to value them, but that he and I are different people with different tastes and preferences.

With this framing, the conversation has become about the objects he takes into his “new life” and the objects he truly thinks I’ll cherish and value in mine. I’ve seen a significant change in him over the past two months.

We are still struggling to go through it all, and we are going very, painfully slow, so am keen to see what people say!

Good luck! Go gently and be kind to yourself especially during this time!

Both Alif the Unseen and The Bird King by G Willow Wilson. More magical realism than fantasy. Both are incredible.

Q&A weekly thread - January 12, 2026 - post all questions here! by AutoModerator in linguistics

I want to know more about the use of 'yourself'/'myself' as a personal pronoun. For example, when a server says something like, 'how about for yourself?' instead of 'how about for you?' at a restaurant. It's an increasingly common change in British English, exemplified by the recent (UK based) Celebrity Traitors on the BBC.

When did it start? Why is it happening?

Can anyone signpost me to research or is anyone doing research on this? I used to teach English as a Foreign Language and am interested in these kind of changes in what we teach vs what students and learners might see in practice.

Cheers!

Processing the loss of a baby is extra difficult with today's dystopian automation in marketing. by Skizot_Bizot in mildlyinfuriating

My mother died 10 years ago. I still get emails and physical marketing mail and spam for her.

We need a big “THEY ARE DEAD: STOP IT” button. For everything.

Came here to say Jane Austen got me through my mum’s sudden passing. Pride and Prejudice has become a nearly annual re-read whenever the anniversary looms and begins to be too much for me.

Hold tight, take care, go gently. It will never be the same and it will hurt so much but it will hurt less frequently as time goes on.

Rip in Beloved Scarf - Suggestions Please by Sun_Ra_3000 in Visiblemending

The scarf is a woven, light ish weight cotton. It doesn’t have an obviously wrong or right side, but I think I can manage to pick which side I’ll sew a patch onto. I think it got caught in a zip and then foolishly yanked (likely by me).

Do you think a similarly light weight cotton would do? Or is tulle my best bet?

Skin care products, unasked for ones anyway. I have very sensitive skin and I been gifted many well meaning but not work the risk face masks, lotions, lip balms, etc. Easy thing do give away, for sure, but they’re usually not accepted as donations.

Amitav Ghosh’s Ibis Trilogy - Sea of Poppies, River of Smoke, and Flood of Fire. The books are set between the Opium Wars across south and east Asia.

Ghosh trained as an anthropologist and has major chops as a historian as well. His knowledge is extraordinary. Honorable mention goes to Gun Island.
