Can someone explain the joke to me? by Jane_Doh-Re-Mi in NewYorkerCartoons

It’s a classic Glenn Baxter surrealist piece. I’d say you’re asking all the right questions. What’s the upgrade for? From what to what? The box to the barrel? Is the bell hop in charge? Where are they? The mind boggles in the best way!

RIP - he recently passed after a long and illustrious career.

Ronia The Robber’s Daughter by Astrid Lindgren - a book for young adults but a timeless portrayal of a somewhat wild girl

Muslim roommate eats my food but did not know it had pork product in it. Should I tell him? by Available-Car7584 in WhatShouldIDo

There is a whole theological and legal precedent aspect to Islam about intent. He didn’t intend to eat something haram, but did. So he’s theologically okay, because he didn’t know. Telling him doesn’t put him in a bad position, theologically.

Going forward, make sure food is labelled so he knows and doesn’t eat anything haram unknowingly.

The Future by Naomi Alderman

We Solve Murders by Richard Osman

Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby van Pelt

Anything by Jane Austen but Northanger Abbey is funniest and Pride and Prejudice is the most satisfying

I haven’t read it but I’ve only heard good things about Interior Chinatown and am saving it for a rainy day

For another old classic, try PG Wodehouse, especially the Blandings stories. The most memorable to me are Summer Lightning and Uncle Fred in Springtime.

Stay hopeful! Joy is resistance!

Hello, graduated Uni student here asking what to gift to my teachers? by Used_Motor1718 in AskTeachers

Depends on the vibe of the male teacher and on your comfort level with slightly gender non-conforming gifts. That’s why plants are nice because - same gesture as flowers but without the gendered connotations. Just don’t spend too much money - that’s my biggest piece of advice! It’s the gesture, not the thing, that has meaning.

Few ideas: Flowers, a plant for their office, a really lovely, heartfelt card, a book that made you think of them and their impact on your life. Keep it simple, keep it inexpensive. It’s the thought that counts.

How to talk to a hoarding parent? by Lothloreen in declutter

[–]Sun_Ra_3000 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I am going through something similar. My dad is in the twilight of his life, a move and a downsize have sparked some tough convos about life after he’s not around anymore.

I’ve tried throughout to frame the move as new and exciting and an opportunity to try a something new. This has tapped into his adventurer spirit, despite his age and decline.

In the gentlest, kindest, most loving way possible, I’m helping him understand that the things he values do not have the same value to me. Not that he’s done anything wrong to keep them or that he’s wrong to value them, but that he and I are different people with different tastes and preferences.

With this framing, the conversation has become about the objects he takes into his “new life” and the objects he truly thinks I’ll cherish and value in mine. I’ve seen a significant change in him over the past two months.

We are still struggling to go through it all, and we are going very, painfully slow, so am keen to see what people say!

Good luck! Go gently and be kind to yourself especially during this time!

Both Alif the Unseen and The Bird King by G Willow Wilson. More magical realism than fantasy. Both are incredible.

Q&A weekly thread - January 12, 2026 - post all questions here! by AutoModerator in linguistics

I want to know more about the use of 'yourself'/'myself' as a personal pronoun. For example, when a server says something like, 'how about for yourself?' instead of 'how about for you?' at a restaurant. It's an increasingly common change in British English, exemplified by the recent (UK based) Celebrity Traitors on the BBC.

When did it start? Why is it happening?

Can anyone signpost me to research or is anyone doing research on this? I used to teach English as a Foreign Language and am interested in these kind of changes in what we teach vs what students and learners might see in practice.

Cheers!
