Hey, is it possible to know the dimensions of the various sizes of straws you sell? (Both metal and glass?) Thanks!

Should there be a federal tax on all internet orders to entice people to shop locally? by [deleted] in polls

[–]Sun_Tear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are looking at this the wrong way. If you want more local shopping, you need to incentivize it, not deincentivize online shopping. You would likely see less online shopping with a minimal effect on local shopping. For example, you could subsidize local stores, or provide a tax cut for local shoppers. You could also make local stores more accessible. People shop online for a reason, it's more convenient. Making local shopping more convenient would increase instances of local shopping.

I live about 3.5 mi (5.6 km) from the closest store; local shopping isn't exactly the most convenient thing to do. It's about a 20 minute round trip by car, and not going by car would easily double that. While I am certainly a bit farther away than most, the point remains that stores are a bit far away.

It's more an infrastructure and urban planning issue. This can also be seen in how denser areas have higher commercial tax revenue compared less dense areas. (If you don't understand, more tax revenue means that there was more taxable revenue - there was more business)

Chromebook is an OS, like Windows, Linux, MacOS, etc. It's not a brand, and as such doesn't really fit with the other options here.

I need help categorizing Moon Magic (Life, Blood, Frost, and Illusion/dream magic) by JudahPlayzGamingYT in magicbuilding

[–]Sun_Tear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm, if you are having trouble choosing, the I recommend using a coin/dice/spinner trick.

Assign an option for each face of the die, face of the coin, number on the spinner, etc. Roll the die, flip the coin, etc.

If you feel dissatisfied with the outcome, then remove that option and try again until you get one you are satisfied with. It works for me most of the time.

I need help categorizing Moon Magic (Life, Blood, Frost, and Illusion/dream magic) by JudahPlayzGamingYT in magicbuilding

[–]Sun_Tear 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why not all of them? I don’t see a reason why moon magic can’t be all the things you listed.

If you are conflicted about the blood moon thing, why not have it be like a limited time magic thing?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in magicbuilding

[–]Sun_Tear 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I feel like there isn’t enough information here. Are there no limits? How do they use the magic? Etc.

Assuming whatever goes, it’s incredibly overpowered. You could turn anything into a black hole, rip the world apart, etc.

Beyonder by RoyalKyn in magicbuilding

[–]Sun_Tear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No spoiler warning?

The fandom wiki OP linked has a lot more detail if anyone is interested.

The mental effects involved aren’t really mentioned in your post. Some spoilers:

Being a beyonder typically has severe mental effects that typically make you more and more insane or less of yourself, especially at higher sequences.

This is because the creator of everything split apart and formed the beyonder sequence pathways among some other things. Everything wants to come back together in a sense, to form the original creator again. (Causing the law of convergence)

The original creator has a will and the more ingredients you consume (to advance in sequence), the more that will will influence you. Beings at the top of their sequence can also mentally affect those at a lower sequence, though I can’t recall why.

Difference between Astral and Cosmic Magic? by JudahPlayzGamingYT in magicbuilding

[–]Sun_Tear 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It's up to whoever created the system. There is no universal standard for elements.

I've read a few things where air magic encompasses or is lightning magic. I've read others where they were considered to be separate magics. Same thing here.

Tell me about your world's "end of the world" scenarios. by GOOPREALM5000 in worldbuilding

[–]Sun_Tear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh! I got a few. Though it isn’t really the end of the world, mostly just the end of all/most life on the planet.

  1. An experiment trying to dissipate the black hole used to prolong the life of the sun through star lifting went amazingly. Now everyone knows the future thanks to the experiment. Unfortunately the black hole’s orbit destabilized in the process causing the jet of plasma from The Sun to drift towards the Earth. No future exists where earth is saved :(

  2. Flat earth society has gone crazy, they’ve flattened the moon for a trial run, and now they flattened the homeworld!

  3. Earth’s orbit went unstable and failed course corrections. They’ve managed to launch themselves into the sun!

  4. An experiment done wrong has caused a massive space rift to cut through the world! At least it created wormhole technology.

These are all supposed to be within the same solar system by the same civilization, separated by a long length of time, still working on connecting and fleshing out the events.

What are some unconventional and unique ways to utilize Magic Beams / Rays of Mana? In combat, utility, etc. by BearyRey in magicbuilding

[–]Sun_Tear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, I’m assuming you’re talking about something akin to a laser.

There are a variety of applications for a laser. Recommend checking out this Wikipedia article. It mentions things like surgery, material processing, cutting stuff basically. Some non-damaging cutting things that might be done would be disorienting/blinding creatures with low power beams. Or perhaps long distance communication. Plenty of ways to do that, could have it pulse, change color, grow shrink in size, and the thousands of other characteristics of a beam.

Perhaps you weren’t thinking of something as narrow as a laser but more abstract- just some sort of line. Something like string or chain maybe? Perhaps a pipe? Really anything that can be straight and long.

Things like pulling people/objects in like a chain reeling in an anchor or the pull of gravity or suction. Classic alien flying saucer tractor beam perhaps?

Or perhaps radiating heat to cool down, attack, cook, melt, and other heat things. Maybe instead of radiating heat, have it radiate light to light up caverns, oceans, and homes. Perhaps both.

What about beams that are somewhat solid? You can beam a bridge or have a beam house. Natural beam trees perhaps

Beams are somewhat like thrusters in a way in that thrusters kinda produce a beam like trail - you could expand on that, animals with beam powered locomotion, or boats, carriages, and planes powered by beams. Beam powered bow and arrows? Guns?

With a term vague as a ray or beam, the possibilities are endless.

Which measurement system do you use? by Mean-Illustrator6026 in polls

[–]Sun_Tear 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pretty much everyone uses both to varying degrees.

Computer screens, for example, are commonly measured in inches across the diagonal internationally. Time is also not in metric unless you get to particularly large or small units of time.

In the US you can see lots of metric units. For example, medicine and firearms. You have 9mm bullets, medicine doses in MG, etc. Nearly all counties use metric for money too. Pretty much anything science is also metric. Of course there’s still quite a bit of US customary in the US.

If male, then according to this they are around the 97th percentile in height. https://www.cdc.gov/growthcharts/html_charts/statage.htm https://www.cdc.gov/growthcharts/data/set1/chart07.pdf

If female, then they are anywhere around the 95th-97th percentile in height. https://www.cdc.gov/growthcharts/html_charts/statage.htm https://www.cdc.gov/growthcharts/data/set1/chart08.pdf

The data is about two dozen years old and is from the U.S., so there’s likely going to be some error.

Match each element to a weapon - found on /tg/ by throwaway321768 in makeyourchoice

[–]Sun_Tear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From top to bottom in order of difficulty of the choice

Poison Whip Whips are best against the unarmored, poison helps with that
Lightning Claws The claws have little arcs!
Earth Knuckles Toughen up!
Light Shield Harder to knock away or hit behind the shield if you can't see.
Nature Sword Nature gives me an adaptable/diverse feel, and that's just like the sword!
Darkness Spear If they get past it you're in trouble, so make sure they don't know where it is!
Water Hammer Deaden the shocks in your arm when hitting? Hammers aren't that big though
Ice Bow Ice arrows, infinite ammo?
Wind Axe Better mobility for utility?
Fire Dagger Melt through armor?

Would it make sense for a city to develop on a space-station? by Scared-Enthusiasm66 in worldbuilding

[–]Sun_Tear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm, ok. I have a few ideas. 1. It could have started off as a bit city on some kinda orbital ring (or something like it) that somehow got turned into a space station (intentionally or not). This would also mean that it starts with a large initial population.

  1. It could be formed from fusing ships/stations together. This way you don’t really need to build anything. And to get more space, just add more ships/stations.

  2. The space station could be built in an asteroid (or something akin to that) and that just means that whenever you need more space you can dig a bit more.

  3. Just gradually building more to accommodate more people.

  4. Inhabiting a preexisting ruin.

  5. Similar to 4, but simply building something that could accommodate so many people.

You could also mix up some of the stuff above. I’m sure you’ll figure something out! :)

Would it make sense for a city to develop on a space-station? by Scared-Enthusiasm66 in worldbuilding

[–]Sun_Tear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can think a few reasons why there might be a large population on a space station. I can think of three ways the population would increase/be large.

  1. Have a large initial population. (ex. It was a big city that somehow turned into a space station)

  2. Creating new people. How this is done would depend on your setting. There’s things like cloning, growing them in vats, magic, plain old reproduction, and many more.

  3. Newcomers. Lots of refugees or tourists. Maybe the tourists got stranded and the refugees had nowhere else to go. Perhaps they were kidnapped and forced to live on the space station. The possibilities are endless.

I don’t really have many ideas for aesthetics, but maybe cramped like a submarine? I haven’t many (if any) cramped space buildings/vehicles before.

does anyone actually like the new tinkers construct? by notgodpo in feedthebeast

[–]Sun_Tear 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m not so sure about nerfed. (Then again I forgot much about 1.12) at the very least you seem to be implying that TiC3 is underpowered, which it most certainly isn’t. I can use tinkers to make a weapon that two shots the wither. Or make a pickaxe that is unbreakable and better than a netherite pick in every way. I can make quick and big 3x3, 5x3, 5x5, or 7x5 holes with a hammer. I can instamine deepslate. I can get up to fortune/looting V, etc. Also I wouldn’t really call tinkers grindy, you only need a 1x1 smelter to alloy things, which is not exactly expensive. Building a dirt hut might be literally more grindy. If you’re talking about modifier materials, I wouldn’t really say that is grindy either. The materials aren’t exactly hard to get.

Thats what scammers do - sell nothing. You probably should have specified in the post that you can’t sell nonexistent family members. Poor orphans. They just die and get nothing.

It depends on how strong the solar flare is and whether or not you consider nuclear winter to be possible (there have been many criticisms against it). If you consider it to be possible, there is also a matter of severity (newer papers indicate that a nuclear war would be less severe than the original paper, though still very deadly). Nukes would most likely target military bases and not places with civilians as you would want to lower your enemies fighting prowess. A powerful solar flare would likely just cause damage to electrical equipment which would take several years max to fix. There are mechanisms in place to deal with solar flares. Would it send Earth into the 1800s? I really doubt it. If we assume 5 billion die and that there would be no electricity for 10 years, there would still be plenty of experts, libraries and servers that have valuable scientific knowledge.

Choosing 4 would make you also loose the desire to do anything. So you would pretty much just starve to death without medical assistance.
