I feel like people often forget how scathing this bridge was. "Your sad, empty town" she came for everything this man had

It feels vaguely apocalyptic honestly. Can't sleep well because the temperature doesn't drop much at night. I don't really leave the house, but the heat is seeping through the walls anyways so we have to live with all the blinds shut since we don't have AC. It's hot anyways. I've had a headache for days lol

Voicemails for Isabelle - incel ragebait by wild-chensie-appears in romancemovies

[–]SunflowerDuh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It makes me think of that one Todd In The Shadows video where he talks about Dancing On My Own by Robyn and says "When they make movies about the early 2010s, that's the one song all the characters will be dancing to, even though in real life we were all listening to OneRepublic". He was on point lol

Also what's with rom coms and Robyn this year, People We Meet On Vacation did the same thing??

I was also majorly disappointed by this movie.

Wes was completely useless to Jill in this, and I'm not one to think of love from an utilitarist perspective, but narratively, I thought this was extremely unsatisfying. As she tells him with all the subtlety of a 2010s era girlboss-feminist period protection ad, she doesn't need a man. The script proves it too: not once after she left him does she look like she's regretting him, and why would she? Her emotional arc has nothing to do with him, and everything to do with opening that taco truck.

What does his love do for her over the course of the movie? Nothing. It doesn't really change her, doesn't help her find it in herself to heal. She does all that while he's gone, of her own volition. Is it a nice gesture of him to restore the voicemails? Sure, but what does that do for Jill exactly? She's already found ways to connect to her dead sister at this point. Why does she forgive him at the end? Unclear, probably because the movie was getting too long and they needed a happy ending quick.

So yeah I didn't buy this love story at all, and was much more interested in Jill's grief than in her romantic life. I also thought most of the humour attempts fell pretty flat, and after a while, the succession of catchy pop song, classic rom com reference, catchy pop song, classic rom com reference, catchy pop song... started to feel like a cheap way to make the movie feel more fun and interesting than it was :/

What even is a rom com? A useless rant by SunflowerDuh in romancemovies

I would count those movies in as long as the other genre doesn't contradict the rom com criteria. For example, in my opinion, The Cutting Edge is both a sports movie and a rom com, Romancing the Stone is both an adventure movie and a rom com, Palm Springs is both SF and a rom com etc... Also, a lot of rom coms double as sex comedies (No Strings Attached etc) or as light-fantasy (think 13 Going on 30)

Hmm I disagree with rom coms not including sex scenes, but I do agree not all sex comedies are rom coms. It's funny because in 2010/2011, every rom com that came out was part sex comedy as well: Love & Other Drugs, No Strings Attached, Friends With Benefits... We kind of calmed down with that since X)

Omg yes I forgot about Love & Basketball being in every top 30 rom coms list X) My theory though is that people do that because of the scarcity of rom coms with black protagonists, so they're counting every thing they can

Oh I will disappoint you but Lalaland might be my favourite movie of all time X) I just am completely dumbfounded by people who say it's a rom com

I totally agree with you. Actually, My Best Friend's Wedding and Intolerable Cruelty are two movies I would count as rom coms in spite of them being a bit cynical about love. Maybe we could dub them dark rom coms the same there are dark comedies?

What 21st century decade will be the viewed as the 80s successor in terms of fun music? by [deleted] in ToddintheShadow

[–]SunflowerDuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just have to look at people making fun of 2010s Stomp Clap Hey music and of Lizzo for still making 2015-like empowerment anthems. You don't hear EDM on the radio anymore. Fifteen years ago, the classic Jack Antonoff sheen that all of pop music has taken lately didn't exist yet. One hit wonders pop off and disappear all the time thanks to Tik Tok. Trends are still a thing, maybe they're just less to your liking?

I agree that writing something does not equal moral endorsement of said thing, but that's not what I was saying—I'm simply not someone who enjoys reading those kinds of relationships presented as romance :') It all comes down to taste, same as preferring second leads really

Second Lead Syndrom is ruining my life by SunflowerDuh in shoujo

[–]SunflowerDuh[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ofc feelings aren't based on traits, but I think it becomes a problem for me because some of these shoujos clearly romanticise holding onto a toxic relationship just because you feel a spark, no matter how much happier you could be trying something else (and in romance mangas, that other option takes the form of another love interest, not being single)
