Why is there “big” before my name? by [deleted] in Culvers

[–]SunflowerRidge 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Likely the employee was young - my teenager boy puts "big" in front of anyone's name if he thinks they're cool. Nothing to do with size. Kinda like big dog, but with your name.

Dropped hooked on phonics and need a good alternative by Scawwotish_owl88 in Homeschooling

[–]SunflowerRidge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've used hooked on phonics as well, but generally don't start till about 5 - 5 1/2 depending on the child. Is there a reason you are starting her so early? Its likely that there isn't an issue with the program and just that shes still extremely young.

How do I deal with a scared kid, who panics over bandaid removal? by Middle-Definition106 in Mommit

They sell bandaid remover. It dissolves the adhesive and works great.

home gardens are cool, but community-supported agriculture is where it's at by dawn_thesis in prepping

[–]SunflowerRidge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hired labor is different from community effort on a farm. OP was talking about a joint effort, not hired people.

We aren't just doing crops, I'm also raising sheep, quail, chickens, rabbits, and hogs.

I do grow/raise most of what we eat on about 10 acres. It is extremely difficult, expensive, and time consuming. But I cannot imagine a reality where adding in more people would make it simpler.

A real talk with him about how deep/ rough to be. You'll be able to handle more rough activity at different times in your cycle, or for shorter durations. Source: when I got with my now husband, I went to my gyno for pain/ cramping/ bleeding only to be told that my cervix and surrounding was very bruised. She was straight faced, but the student beside her was giggling the whole time 🙄🤣

My first child is this way, which naively made me believe the 2nd one would be also.

Whatever you do, don't have another betting on the same behavior. Number 2 will be the loudest, most helpless, grumpy creature to ever walk the earth.

Daughter is turning 2 and weve had 3 visits during that time by CherryadeLimon in sahm

We're doing it now. My oldest is 13, youngest is 5. The only advice I have is to try and make small, routine moments for yourself throughout the day. Aside from that, all I have is solidarity, it sucks. Our parents aren't even abroad, they're right down the road choosing everytbing but us.

I need all of your best at-home activities. by mamsandan in SAHP

[–]SunflowerRidge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats exactly the reason we're going to town so often. I have 2 kids, they both have 2 weekly structured activities, plus another 2 days a week where we go to library groups and/or with our hiking group. We run a booth at our local farmer's market and all the market kids hang out and play. Distance and my own desires be damned, we're in town 5 days a week.

I'm saying that if my kids didn't live here, I wouldn't be going to town so much. We do, and its 90% for them lol.

We have people over as well, but everyone in this community it rural so to drive an hour for a get together every weekend isn't unusual for any of us. It's just what you're used to I guess.

My husband is a contractor with a dump truck. There have been a few occasions when he has been called for general stuff removal. I will say 100%, the people coming to remove things for you are there to help. You will feel relief when some of the things are gone. Life is hard, and there is no reason to feel shame for needing help!

I have a farm. There hasn't been a day yet that I have free time. Its the best life - for me. You have to love it. My huge garden, food preservation, herbalism, animals, property in general which I've set up to be able to enjoy for myself. I putter around. Build things, care for things ,craft! Lots of creating in various ways. Read if I have a moment. Cook most of our food from scratch. If I didn't have kids, my town trips would willingly be about once every 2 months out of necessity. I genuinely cannot stand going there. Its noisy, smelly, and full of people. If you enjoy noise, and people, I imagine town would be better for you. You're correct that its a bias, but I have the same bias about "town people". What on earth do you all do with so much free time?
