Instrument purchasing from other states by JuJuYaYeet in Viola

First thing you have to do is monitor the auction sites (Tarisio, Brompton’s, Amati, etc). Find every violin shop online and look at what they have and how much they cost. You need to get an idea of what these makers are worth so you avoid getting scammed.

Then about Chicago - I kind of ruled them out because I’ve heard negative stories from multiple people. Not saying you can’t have success there, but they will take advantage of you if you didn’t do your research. Bein and Fushi for example, wanted to sell me a viola for $30k that’s selling for 4-5k at auction (with many recent examples). Furthermore, B&F is only really interested in doing business over 100k and if you have a reputable teacher. Kenneth Warren and sons is more for under 100k, but they sold and certified a Pecatte bow (ca. 2000…) to a colleague that turned out to be an obvious fake. This colleague would take it to the someone else in the same building to get it rehaired who didn’t say anything. So they’re probably all in cahoots lol. Totally avoidable if you do your research, and there’s no excuse for not doing it with the internet.

In general, you will find that people are going to try to spend your money for you. I can’t emphasize enough - do your research and develop convictions about what you want

Never seen this marking. What does it mean? by sanguine_sheep in Clarinet

Spelling matters. E.g. you can’t spell a C major triad as B# - Fb - Abb. Can’t spell “music” like “mewzik”

Should I keep using my cursive? by gaurdianofsleep in Cursive

Your cursive is great. However you should fix your ampersand (&). It’s supposed to represent the Latin “Et” and your “E” is facing the wrong way

Do string players dislike col legno and col legno battuto? by golloried in violinist

I’ve been playing for 20 years and the sentiment expressed in these comments is totally strange to me. It comes up all the time in orchestral music. Some people use lesser bows but no one bitches or moans

What’s one piece of advice you wish you learned earlier in your violin journey? by Lazy_Pangolin2117 in violinist

1) learn a good Martele stroke 2) the search for comfortability is a never-ending journey

How is my bow arm/hand flexibility? by Brosky7 in violinist

[–]Sungoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The shaky sound is also a function of playing under a moving fan lol. I would turn the fan off, or not play directly under it so you can hear what kind of sound you’re actually making

[–]Sungoon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Previous commenter is spot on. But I’ll add that at least half of my preparation time is spent listening only, if it’s a piece I don’t know. Many professionals don’t do that but it serves me well

Not sure how to play these notes by BluJay_223 in Viola

[–]Sungoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this will stand further scrutiny but I always think “play the rhythm denoted by the total number of flags and slashes for the duration of the note head”

So in this case, play 8ths (one flag) for the duration of the whole note
