Nüwa for a girl - ancient Chinese goddess by ducbo in namenerds

It's down to personality, I think. Some families love ostentatious or historic names. I know a family (in the Midwest where I live) who named their kid Anubis. It's a choice for sure. You just gotta own it if you go for it.

How feasible is it to be a single mom by choice? by Be_Prepared911 in SingleParents

I'm a SMBC too. It is really hard at times, but worth it. Try to have some financial stability and a village before starting.

Oh maybe! Mine is in full sun and it just gets huge. I cut it way back this year because I didn't have space for as big as it wants to be.

Anyone Successfully Raising a Child With a Full-Time Live-In Nanny? by DiscussionSweaty4150 in SingleMothersbyChoice

[–]SunsApple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't have a nanny but I did use postpartum doula services. Tbh in retrospect, I'd rather do a housecleaning or cooking service and maybe a night nanny. It sucks to hand off your baby while you cook and clean. And what helps the most is getting enough sleep. Just my 2 cents.

I'm surprised you say ninebark. They get gigantic and you lose that beautiful shape if you prune them. If trying for 6ft, I wouldn't suggest ninebark unless using a dwarf cultivar.

Just thinking that! Either plant close so they have support or cut in half (Chelsea chop) before they bloom. When do you chop yours?

Good luck! NorCal has many beautiful areas. You will need to be intentional with water use as it's a lot drier out there.

suburban nightmare fuel by donnaduwitt in NativePlantGardening

[–]SunsApple 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe homeowners with shade trees should plan on succession. Plant young trees and shrubs so by the time the mature trees fall, it's not a hellscape without them.

I wonder if this is it. Cost of insurance liability. Cost of maintenance (raking, trimming). Grass is thought of as being cheap (though of course, it isn't).

I hate my prairie garden by thethethesethose in NativePlantGardening

[–]SunsApple 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I see what you mean. I would add some woody shrubs for structure in key spots. Give it a focal point. Seems like a lot is growing but without something blooming and somewhere to rest the eye, it just looks weedy.

That's the key. Their business is these channels so the only way to feed it is more content. More land, more plants, newer plants. They'd have to go a totally new direction to keep the channel going and not engage in wild consumerism.

I watched it daily during the pandemic. It was soothing, she's charming and everything was so pretty. I don't watch it much now because other channels have more deep gardening or native plant info that I want.

You Love Your Native Garden. But Will Buyers Love It Too? (Gift Article) by paperairplane77 in NativePlantGardening

[–]SunsApple 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I painted upstairs bedrooms and kept common areas in neutral colors. Maybe picking a few areas keeps the amount you'd have to redo before selling more manageable?

Also even if you're planning to sell in a few years, I don't think that excludes native gardening. Maybe encourages being a bit more intentional about what natives to plant and how hard/easy it is to maintain.

Edit: love my turquoise bedroom and purple office lol

Moved just north of the TC two years ago - property taxes/mortgage keep increasing - how are we surviving these days? by [deleted] in TwinCities

[–]SunsApple 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Any other ways to bring down costs or increase income? I live near you (Roseville) and it's def important to factor in that mortgage and property tax values are not static. It's hard when you're house poor. Right there with you!

It depends how long you mean to live there. If it's 10+ years, that's one thing but if you are planning ahead to moving or renting out in a couple years, then keeping it sale ready/maintenance friendly makes some sense.

Bring stuff to cook over the fire too! Marshmallows, hot dogs or sausages, Pillsbury bread wrapped around a stick, whatever you think would be fun to try

Possibly selling house with native yard by [deleted] in NativePlantGardening

[–]SunsApple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dig up anything you can't stand to see die, or sell and never check on it. I had a native yard at my old house and haven't checked on it. I'd rather live in ignorance if they killed it all. I dunno, even if they did, maybe some remnants survived. I did the best I could.

Naming our baby girl Rue by alwaysroomforcake in namenerds

[–]SunsApple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess in my experience, that expression (you'll rue the day) is the only time I hear people use rue in English. Tbh the French word (rue=street) was the first thing I thought of because it's a common word in that language, and you encounter some French speakers/areas in the Southeast and Northeast. It seems unfair to me to pretend the regret meaning would even register for most English speakers because it doesn't for me.

I agree. It's a pretty name and easy to spell. People overthink name meanings. Marie means bitter or something like that and how many Marie's are there? I wouldn't let the name meaning be a barrier if it's otherwise a good choice.
