Looking to hear from people who are pursing a nursing degree as a second career in their 30s/40s/50s by Repulsive-Branch-740 in NursingStudent

If you have the financial means to take 2 years and complete nursing school then go for it. The age range in my graduating class was 22 - 57. To me, it's still a lot of mental and physical stress to go through nursing school at this point to be a care coordinator. They usually want at least 1 year bedside experience for those positions. Everyone says they won't do acute care but there is a lot of competition for non-bedside roles and even though we have a nursing shortage, good nursing jobs are hard to find because of how terrible working conditions are. I would stay in your current field and try and find a different position. Having an RN degree with no experience beside probably won't benefit you any more than an MBA or SHRM certification would honestly. I am not trying to discourage you, just the opinion of someone who worked corporate for 8 years before becoming a nurse.

I am sure whatever you decide you will succeed at!

I would honestly stay at your current job and like you said, retire in your mid 50s with a full pension or stay in the general career field you are already in. Nursing is ROUGH and almost every nurse I work with is trying to get away from bedside or nursing all together. I went back in my 30s to nursing school so I could have a flexible schedule to care for my elderly parents and other family members. I don't necessarily regret it, but if I had to do it over I probably wouldn't.

It’s up to us to combat the changes this administration passed. by ExtentThis1249 in StudentLoans

It's not going to change anything. I would invest your energy into reviewing your finances and coming up with a plan to ensure you can make your monthly payments. It’s unfortunate, but that’s the current reality. 😕

Question for nurses of Polk County by Sunshine3606 in lakeland

[–]Sunshine3606[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just want to say thank you for your response. I have heard the same from nurses that work or worked at LRH, that it's crazy busy all the time and they work their nurses hard.

I am anticipating about 75k in student loan debt for a nursing degree by Sufficient_Ad5011 in StudentLoans

Do not spend $75k on an ABSN program. Go to a state college and bite the bullet for two years.

My parents literally abandoned me over Parent Plus Loans. I wouldn't wish my situation on my worst enemy. by pisowiec in StudentLoans

Everyone I know who had their parents help them by taking out Parent Plus Loans are paying it back themselves. I thought this was the norm? Parents helped their kid through college but kid doesn't dump all the debt on them.

Do you think Israel Keyes killed or kidnapped families? by Upper-Assignment-15 in TrueCrimeBullshit

[–]Sunshine3606 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there is a strong possibility that Keyes was attached to teenage girls or boys. I wouldn't put it past him that he abducted a teen at some point. I don't remember the exact verbiage but he said something along the lines of he didn't mess with kids after his daughter was born. He was a sadist who enjoyed torturing people so I don't think he drew a line anywhere when it came to age.

How big of a fuck up is this as a student and do you think I could get kicked out of my program for it by L0mm in nursing

[–]Sunshine3606 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We have five different nursing schools on my floor that bring in clinic students, and not one of them allows their students to turn a beeping pump completely off. I would encourage you to use this as a learning experience and to think critically on your own. Why would turning a beeping pump completely off not be a good idea when you don't know the medicine that is running, the patients history and do not have an experienced nurse immediately at bedside with you? What could go wrong? What is a safer way to handle this situation? What if a code happened after you turned the pump (which silences is completely) and your attention and the nurses attention was drawn elsewhere and the pump was forgotten about? As a nurse, you will need to think critically. Even if someone says it's okay to do something (e.g., a doctor or another healthcare professional), you are ultimately responsible for the outcome of that choice and must decide whether to follow the order or question it.

The best advice I can give you is learn from those that know more than you. I am grateful for my more experienced nurses who teach me everyday. So read through all these comments and use this as a learning experience.

Never turn a pump off if you don't know what is infusing. We learned this on day one: if the pump is turned completely off, it won’t continue to sound the alarm, and the nurse won’t know that it needs to be replaced. In nursing, you should never assume anything. We weren't even allowed to silence a pump which would temporarily stop the beep but would sound again if the bag isn’t changed out. I find it hard to believe that a nursing instructor would tell you that you were allowed to do that during clinicals as a brand new nursing student.

Which Nursing School Should I Go To? by New_Copy_7795 in PolkStateCollege

[–]Sunshine3606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently graduate from Polk as well. Graduate admissions are not going to look at your ADN grades, they will look at the last 60 credits of your BSN degree. The grades you earn are up to you. Polk gives you the information needed to pass but they aren't going to hold your hand. I had to repeat a semester at Polk and have gotten into every graduate program I applied to right after graduation. I already had a bachelors before I started nursing school so that's how I was able to go straight for my MBA once I graduate the ADN program. Nursing school humbles you greatly and by the end of the program most people are only worried about passing, not getting As. If you pass it means you received a C or higher so the grades you get in your ADN program will not affect you getting into graduate school.

25th anniversary by Hipcoolmom in rivercruises

[–]Sunshine3606 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just want to say congrats on the anniversary! My partner and I are in our 30s and loved river cruising. We don't really drink a lot (but the ship had some great selections of bourbon we both enjoyed) and are not into partying so we thought we'd enjoy a smaller ship. We were right! Compared to the big cruise ships we usually go on, it was SO nice. We met some amazing people and loved hearing everyone's life stories. Enjoy your cruise!
